Some programs are also offered combined with an apprenticeship program. Below are short summaries of the most prevalent welding programs offered in the Ionia MI area.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are usually offered by technical and trade schools and require about 1 year to complete. They are more hands-on training in nature, fashioned primarily to teach welding skills. They can furnish a good foundation for a new journeyman or apprentice welder, or supplemental skills for experienced welders.
  • Associate Degree Programs will take 2 years to complete and are usually offered by community colleges. An Associate Degree in Welding Technology offers a more extensive education than the diploma or certificate while still supplying the foundation that readies students to enter the workforce.

Welder Certification Options

welder working in Ionia MI shopThere are a number of institutions that provide welder certifications, which evaluate the skill level and knowledge of those applying. A large number of Ionia MI employers not only expect a degree or certificate from an accredited welding school, but also certification from a highly regarded organization such as the American Welding Society (AWS). A wide range of certifications are offered based on the type of work that the welder does. A few of the things that certification can acknowledge are the welder’s ability to

  • Work in compliance with specific codes
  • Work with certain metal thicknesses
  • Work with specific types of welds
  • Operate according to contract specifications

As earlier stated, various states, cities or local municipalities have licensing mandates for welders. Of those mandating licensing, a number additionally require certification for different kinds of work. Certification is also a way to prove to employers that you are a highly skilled and qualified welder. So similarly as with licensing, check the requirements for your local area and make certain that the welder trade school you select prepares you for certification as needed.

Points to Ask Welding Trade Programs

What to ask Ionia MI welding schoolsAfter you have decided on the credential you want to attain, a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to compare schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are a large number of welding vocational and trade schools in the Ionia MI area. That’s why it’s important to determine up front what qualifications your chosen school must have. We have already discussed a couple of significant ones that many people look at first, which are location and the cost of tuition. As mentioned, although they are essential qualifiers, they are not the only ones that need to be considered. After all, the school you select is going to furnish the instruction that will be the foundation of your new profession as a welder. So following are some additional factors you might want to evaluate before selecting a welding vocational school.

Accreditation. It’s essential that the welder tech school you select is accredited by either a national or a regional agency. There are 2 basic types of accreditation. The school may receive Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on an individual program the school has, for instance Welding Technology. So make certain that the program you choose is accredited, not just the school alone. Also, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, like the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). In addition to helping make sure that you obtain an excellent education, the accreditation might also help in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are often not offered in Ionia MI for schools that are not accredited. Finally, for those states or municipalities that mandate licensing, they may require that the welding training program be accredited as well.

Job Placement and Apprenticeship Programs. A large number of welding certificate or degree programs are provided in conjunction with an apprenticeship program. Other schools will assist in placing you in a job or an apprenticeship after graduation. Ask if the schools you are reviewing help in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job placement program. The schools must have partnerships with local unions and other metal working businesses to which they can place their students. Older schools may have a more substantial network of graduates that they can rely upon for placements. These programs can assist students in finding employment and establish relationships within the Ionia MI welding community.

Completion and Job Placement Rates. The completion rate is the percentage of students that enroll in an educational program and complete it. It’s crucial that the welding school you select has a higher completion rate. A lower rate may indicate that the students who were in the program were unhappy with the training, the teachers, or the facilities, and quit. The job placement rate is also an indication of the quality of training. A high job placement rate will not only verify that the program has a good reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of Ionia MI employer relationships to assist students secure apprenticeships or employment after graduation.

Modern Equipment and Facilities. After you have decreased your choice of welder schools to two or three options, you should think out going to the campuses to inspect their facilities. Make sure that both the equipment and the facilities that you will be trained on are modern. Specifically, the training equipment should be similar to what you will be working with on the job. If you are unsure what to look for, and are already in an apprenticeship program, consult with the master welder you are working under for guidance. If not, ask a local Ionia MI welding contractor if they can give you a few pointers.

School Location. Although we already briefly talked about the relevance of location, there are a few additional issues that we should cover. You should keep in mind that unless you can move, the welding program you select must be within driving distance of your Ionia MI home. If you do decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides relocation expenses there could be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is especially the case for welding diploma programs offered by community colleges. Additionally, if the school provides an apprenticeship or job placement program, more than likely their placements are within the school’s local community. So the location of the school needs to be in an area or state where you ultimately will desire to work.

Smaller Classes. Individualized instruction is important for a hands-on trade such as welding. It’s possible to be overlooked in bigger classes and not get much personalized instruction. Find out what the typical class size is for the welding schools you are reviewing. Ask if you can attend a couple of classes so that you can see just how much personal attention the students are getting. While there, speak with a few of the students and get their feedback. Also, talk with some of the teachers and ask what their welding experience has been and what certifications and credentials they hold.

Convenient Class Scheduling. Some people learn a new profession while still employed at their present job. Check to see that the class schedules for the schools you are considering are flexible enough to satisfy your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Ionia MI, verify that the schools you are reviewing offer those options. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you pick offers part-time enrollment. Also, find out what the protocol is to make up classes should you miss any due to illness, work or family circumstances.

Online Welder Courses

Ionia MI master welder attending online welding classesWelding is truly a manual type of profession, and for that reason not very suitable for training online. However, there are some online welding programs offered by various community colleges and vocational schools in the greater Ionia MI area that may count toward a degree or certificate program. These classes mainly cover such topics as safety, reading blueprints, and metallurgy. They can help give a novice a basis to initiate their training and education. Nevertheless, the most critical point is that you can’t learn how to weld or work with welding materials until you actually do it. Clearly that can’t be done online. These skills must be learned in an on-campus setting or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is more appropriate for experienced welders that would like to advance their expertise or perhaps obtain a more advanced degree. So if you should discover an online welding degree or certificate program, be very careful and make sure that the majority of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of setting.

In the 1850s, they were relocated to Oceana County.[7]
