  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are generally offered by trade and technical schools and take about 1 year to finish. Welding Certification Choices

welder working in North Branch MI shopThere are multiple organizations that offer welder certifications, which test the knowledge and skill level of those applying. Numerous North Branch MI employers not only expect a degree or certificate from an accredited welding program, but also certification from a respected agency like the American Welding Society (AWS). Different certifications are offered based upon the type of work that the welder performs. Some of the skills that certification can attest to are the welder’s ability to

  • Operate in compliance with specific codes
  • Work with specified metal thicknesses
  • Work with specific types of welds
  • Work in compliance with contract specifications

As already mentioned, some cities, states or local municipalities have licensing mandates for welders. Of those calling for licensing, many additionally require certification for various kinds of work. Certification is also a way to prove to employers that you are a highly skilled and knowledgeable welder. So similarly as with licensing, check the requirements for your local area and make certain that the welding tech school you decide on prepares you for certification if needed.

Questions to Ask Welder Trade Programs

What to ask North Branch MI welding schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the credential you want to earn, a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to evaluate schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are many welder trade and vocational schools in the North Branch MI area. That’s why it’s essential to decide in advance what qualifications your chosen school must have. We have previously discussed two important ones that most people consider first, which are location and tuition cost. As mentioned, although they are essential qualifiers, they are not the only ones that should be considered. After all, the program you choose is going to furnish the education that will be the foundation of your new career as a welder. So following are some additional factors you might want to consider before picking a welding trade school.

Accreditation. It’s extremely important that the welding tech school you decide on is accredited by either a national or a regional organization. There are 2 basic types of accreditation. The school may receive Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on a specific program the school has, for example Welding Technology. So make sure that the program you pick is accredited, not just the school alone. Additionally, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, such as the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). Besides helping ensure that you receive a quality education, the accreditation may also help in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases not available in North Branch MI for non-accredited schools. Finally, for those states or municipalities that require licensing, they may require that the welder training program be accredited also.

Job Assistance and Apprenticeship Programs. Numerous welding diploma or degree programs are offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship program. Various other schools will assist in placing you in an apprenticeship or a job after graduation. Ask if the schools you are looking at assist in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job placement program. The schools should have associations with local unions and other metal working businesses to which they can place their students. More established schools may have a larger network of graduates that they can rely upon for placements. These programs can help students find employment and establish associations within the North Branch MI welding community.

Completion and Job Placement Rates. The completion rate is the percentage of students that begin an instructional program and finish it. It’s crucial that the welder school you choose has a higher completion rate. A reduced rate might mean that the students who joined the program were dissatisfied with the instruction, the teachers, or the facilities, and quit. The job placement rate is also an indication of the caliber of training. A higher job placement rate will not only confirm that the program has an excellent reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of North Branch MI contacts to help students obtain apprenticeships or employment after graduation.

Modern Facilities and Equipment. After you have decreased your selection of welder programs to 2 or 3 options, you should consider going to the campuses to inspect their facilities. Confirm that both the equipment and the facilities that you will be instructed on are modern. Specifically, the training equipment should be comparable to what you will be using on the job. If you are not sure what to look for, and are already in an apprenticeship program, consult with the master welder you are working under for guidance. Otherwise, ask a local North Branch MI welding contractor if they can give you some tips.

School Location. Although we already briefly talked about the importance of location, there are a few additional points that we need to cover. You should remember that unless you are able to relocate, the welder school you pick must be within driving distance of your North Branch MI home. If you do opt to attend an out-of-state school, apart from moving costs there may be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is particularly true for welding diploma programs offered by community colleges. Additionally, if the school offers a job placement or apprenticeship program, more than likely their placements are within the school’s regional community. So the location of the school should be in an area or state where you ultimately will want to work.

Small Classes. Personalized training is important for a manual trade such as welding. It’s easy to get lost in larger classes and not receive much one-on-one training. Ask what the typical class size is for the welder programs you are looking at. Inquire if you can attend a few classes so that you can witness how much individual attention the students are receiving. While there, talk with some of the students and get their feedback. Also, talk to a couple of the trainers and ask what their welding experience has been and what certifications and credentials they hold.

Flexible Class Scheduling. Many people learn a new trade while still working at their current job. Check to see that the class schedules for the schools you are looking at are convenient enough to satisfy your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near North Branch MI, make certain that the schools you are looking at provide those alternatives. If you can only enroll part-time, make certain that the school you choose offers part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the protocol is to make up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family responsibilities.

Online Welding Certificate and Degree Programs

North Branch MI master welder attending online welding classesWelding is truly a manual kind of trade, and for that reason not very compatible with online training. Having said that, there are a few online welding programs offered by various community colleges and technical schools in the greater North Branch MI area that may count toward a certificate or degree program. These courses primarily deal with such topics as safety, reading blueprints, and metallurgy. They can help provide a beginner a foundation to begin their education and training. However, the most significant point is that you can’t learn how to weld or use welding materials unless you actually do it. Naturally that can’t be performed online. These skills need to be learned in an on-campus environment or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is better suited for experienced welders that want to advance their expertise or possibly obtain a more advanced degree. So if you should come across an online welding certificate or degree program, be extremely cautious and confirm that the bulk of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of setting.
