Different certifications are offered based upon the kind of work that the welder performs. A few of the things that certification can attest to are the welder’s ability to

  • Work in compliance with specific codes

  • Work with various kinds of welds
  • Perform based on contract specifications

As earlier mentioned, various states, cities or local municipalities have licensing mandates for welders. Of those mandating licensing, some additionally require certification for different kinds of work. So just as with licensing, check the requirements for your local area and make certain that the welding vocational school you choose prepares you for certification as needed.

Topics to Ask Welding Vocational Schools

What to ask Hickory Corners MI welding schoolsWhen you have decided on the credential you would like to earn, a degree, certificate or diploma, you can start to evaluate schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are many welding vocational and trade schools in the Hickory Corners MI area. That’s why it’s necessary to decide up front what qualifications your school of choice must have. We have previously covered two significant ones that many people consider first, which are location and the cost of tuition. As stated, although they are essential qualifications, they are not the only ones that should be considered. After all, the school you select is going to provide the training that will be the foundation of your new profession as a welder. So below are more factors you might need to consider before picking a welder trade school.

Accreditation. It’s very important that the welder vocational school you pick is accredited by either a regional or a national agency. There are 2 basic types of accreditation. The school may earn Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on an individual program the school has, for example Welding Technology. So verify that the program you pick is accredited, not just the school alone. Additionally, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, such as the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). In addition to helping ensure that you receive an excellent education, the accreditation may also help in getting financial aid or student loans, which are often unavailable in Hickory Corners MI for non-accredited schools. Also, for those states or local governments that require licensing, they may require that the welder training program be accredited as well.

Job Assistance and Apprenticeship Programs. Numerous welder certificate or degree programs are offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship program. Some other schools will assist in placing you in an apprenticeship or a job upon graduation. Find out if the schools you are reviewing assist in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job placement program. The schools must have partnerships with local unions and other metal working businesses to which they can place their students. Older schools may have a larger network of graduates that they can utilize for referrals. These programs can help students find employment and develop relationships within the Hickory Corners MI welding community.

Job Placement and Completion Rates. The completion rate is the percentage of students that enroll in an educational program and finish it. It’s essential that the welding program you select has a high completion rate. A reduced rate could mean that the students who were in the program were dissatisfied with the training, the teachers, or the facilities, and dropped out. The job placement rate is also an indication of the quality of training. A high job placement rate will not only verify that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of Hickory Corners MI contacts to help students secure apprenticeships or employment upon graduation.

Up-to-date Facilities and Equipment. Once you have decreased your selection of welder programs to 2 or 3 options, you should consider going to the campuses to evaluate their facilities. Make sure that both the facilities and the equipment that you will be taught on are up-to-date. In particular, the training equipment should be similar to what you will be working with on the job. If you are uncertain what to look for, and are currently in an apprenticeship program, ask the master welder you are working under for guidance. If not, ask a local Hickory Corners MI welding professional if they can give you a few tips.

School Location. Even though we previously briefly covered the relevance of location, there are a couple of additional points that we need to cover. You should keep in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the welding program you select must be within commuting distance of your Hickory Corners MI home. If you do opt to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation expenses there may be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is especially true for welding certificate programs offered by community colleges. Additionally, if the school provides an apprenticeship or job placement program, most likely their placements are within the school’s regional community. So the location of the school should be in a region or state where you ultimately will wish to work.

Smaller Classes. Personalized training is important for a hands-on trade such as welding. It’s easy to get lost in bigger classes and not obtain much one-on-one training. Find out what the average class size is for the welding programs you are reviewing. Inquire if you can sit in on some classes so that you can experience just how much personal attention the students are getting. While there, talk with a few of the students and get their opinions. Similarly, talk to a few of the trainers and ask what their welding experience has been and what certifications and credentials they have earned.

Convenient Class Schedules. Some people learn a new profession while still working at their current job. Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are convenient enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Hickory Corners MI, make sure that the schools you are assessing offer those alternatives. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the policy is to make up classes should you miss any due to illness, work or family responsibilities.

Online Welder Training

Hickory Corners MI master welder attending online welding classesWelding is truly a hands-on kind of trade, and consequently not extremely suitable for training online. Even so, there are some online welding classes offered by various community colleges and technical schools in the greater Hickory Corners MI area that may be credited toward a degree or certificate program. These courses primarily deal with such topics as reading blueprints, safety,, and metallurgy. They can help provide a novice a foundation to start their education and training. However, the most important point is that you can’t learn how to weld or work with welding materials unless you actually do it. Naturally that can’t be performed online. These skills must be learned in an on-campus environment or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is better suited for seasoned welders that desire to advance their knowledge or perhaps attain a more advanced degree. So if you should come across an online welding degree or certificate program, be very careful and verify that the bulk of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of setting.
