Some programs are also offered along with an apprenticeship program. Following are brief summaries of the most typical welding programs available in the White Pigeon MI area.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are generally offered by technical and trade schools and take about a year to complete. They are more hands-on training in scope, fashioned largely to teach welding skills. They can furnish a good foundation for a new journeyman or apprentice welder, or supplemental skills for experienced welders.
  • Associate Degree Programs will take 2 years to finish and are most often offered by community colleges. An Associate Degree in Welding Technology furnishes a more well-rounded education than the diploma or certificate while still supplying the foundation that prepares students to enter the workforce.

Welding Certification Choices

welder working in White Pigeon MI shopThere are various institutions that provide welder certifications, which assess the knowledge and skill level of those applying. A large number of White Pigeon MI employers not only require a certificate or degree from an accredited welding school, but also certification from a respected organization like the American Welding Society (AWS). A wide range of certifications are offered based on the type of work that the welder performs. Some of the skills that certification can attest to are the welder’s ability to

  • Work in compliance with specific codes
  • Work with specific metal thicknesses
  • Work with various types of welds
  • Work in compliance with contract specifications

As formerly mentioned, some cities, states or local municipalities have licensing requirements for welders. Of those requiring licensing, some also require certification for different types of work. Certification is also a way to demonstrate to employers that you are an exceptionally skilled and qualified welder. So similarly as with licensing, check the requirements for your local area and verify that the welder trade school you select prepares you for certification if needed.

Subjects to Ask Welding Tech Schools

What to ask White Pigeon MI welding schoolsOnce you have chosen the credential you want to obtain, a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to compare schools. As you probably know, there are a large number of welder vocational and trade schools in the White Pigeon MI area. That’s why it’s necessary to establish up front what qualifications your chosen school must have. We have previously covered a couple of significant ones that most people consider first, which are location and tuition cost. As stated, although they are very important qualifiers, they are not the only ones that need to be considered. After all, the school you select is going to furnish the instruction that will be the foundation of your new career as a welder. So below are more factors you might want to consider before selecting a welder technical school.

Accreditation. It’s extremely important that the welding technical school you select is accredited by either a national or a regional organization. There are 2 basic types of accreditation. The school may receive Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on a single program the school offers, for instance Welding Technology. So make sure that the program you pick is accredited, not just the school itself. Additionally, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, such as the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). In addition to helping make sure that you obtain an excellent education, the accreditation can also assist in getting financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable in White Pigeon MI for schools that are not accredited. Finally, for those states or local governments that mandate licensing, they may require that the welding training program be accredited also.

Apprenticeship and Job Assistance Programs. Numerous welder certificate or degree programs are provided in conjunction with an apprenticeship program. Various other schools will assist in placing you in a job or an apprenticeship after graduation. Find out if the schools you are considering help in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job assistance program. The schools should have relationships with local unions and other metal working businesses to which they can refer their students. More established schools may have a more substantial network of graduates that they can utilize for referrals. These programs can help students find employment and develop associations within the White Pigeon MI welding community.

Job Placement and Completion Rates. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students that begin an academic program and complete it. It’s crucial that the welder school you choose has a high completion rate. A lower rate might mean that the students who joined the program were dissatisfied with the instruction, the teachers, or the facilities, and dropped out. The job placement rate is also an indication of the caliber of training. A higher job placement rate will not only verify that the program has an excellent reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of White Pigeon MI employer relationships to help students secure employment or apprenticeships upon graduation.

Modern Facilities and Equipment. After you have decreased your selection of welding schools to 2 or 3 options, you should consider going to the campuses to look over their facilities. Make sure that both the facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are modern. Specifically, the training equipment should be similar to what you will be working with on the job. If you are uncertain what to look for, and are already in an apprenticeship program, consult with the master welder you are working under for guidance. If not, ask a local White Pigeon MI welding professional if they can give you some suggestions.

School Location. Even though we previously briefly covered the relevance of location, there are a couple of additional points that we need to deal with. You should bear in mind that unless you have the ability to relocate, the welding school you choose needs to be within driving distance of your White Pigeon MI home. If you do choose to enroll in an out-of-state school, apart from relocation expenses there could be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is particularly true for welder diploma programs offered by community colleges. Additionally, if the school provides an apprenticeship or job placement program, often their placements are within the school’s local community. So the location of the school needs to be in a region or state where you ultimately will desire to work.

Smaller Classes. Individualized training is essential for a hands-on trade such as welding. It’s possible to be overlooked in bigger classes and not get much individualized training. Find out what the usual class size is for the welding schools you are reviewing. Inquire if you can attend some classes so that you can observe how much individual attention the students are receiving. While there, speak with some of the students and get their feedback. Similarly, speak with a couple of the instructors and ask what their welding experience has been and what certifications and credentials they have earned.

Flexible Class Scheduling. Many people learn a new trade while still employed at their present job. Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are considering are convenient enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evenings or on weekends near White Pigeon MI, confirm that the schools you are considering provide those options. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you decide on offers part-time enrollment. Also, check to see what the protocol is to make up classes should you miss any due to illness, work or family emergencies.

Online Welding Classes

White Pigeon MI master welder attending online welding classesWelding is very much a manual kind of trade, and consequently not very compatible with online training. Having said that, there are some online welding courses offered by certain community colleges and trade schools in the greater White Pigeon MI area that can count toward a degree or certificate program. These classes mainly cover such subjects as reading blueprints, safety,, and metallurgy. They can help provide a novice a foundation to initiate their training and education. Nevertheless, the most important point is that you can’t learn how to weld or use welding materials until you actually do it. Clearly that can’t be performed online. These skills have to be learned in an on-campus environment or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is more appropriate for experienced welders that desire to advance their expertise or perhaps earn a more advanced degree. So if you should find an online welding certificate or degree program, be very careful and confirm that the larger part of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of setting.

    White Pigeon, Michigan

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.41 square miles (3.65 km2), of which 1.39 square miles (3.60 km2) is land and 0.02 square miles (0.05 km2) is water.[6] The White Pigeon River flows through the south end of town, emptying into the St. Joseph River that flows to Lake Michigan.

White Pigeon was incorporated by European Americans in 1837.[7][8] The United States Land Office, located in downtown White Pigeon, is the oldest surviving U.S. Land office in the state of Michigan.[9] Following the cession of Native American lands in this area by leaders of regional tribes, the U.S. government sold more than 250,000 acres of land in Michigan for $1.25 an acre in the 1830s to settlers of Western Michigan.

The town was named after the local Potawatomi chief Wahbememe, which means White Pigeon. He was buried in the town, with a memorial stone marking his grave. This gravesite is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.[10][11]
