Welder Degree and Certificate Training Classes

welding car in Stockholm WIThere are multiple alternatives available to get training as a welder in a technical or trade school. You can obtain a diploma, a certificate or an Associate Degree. Bachelor Degrees are offered in Welding Technology or Welding Engineering, but are more advanced degrees than most journeyman welders will need. Some programs are also offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship program. Following are brief descriptions of the most typical welding programs available in the Stockholm WI area.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are normally made available by technical and trade schools and require about one year to complete. They are more hands-on training in nature, designed primarily to develop welding skills. They can furnish a good foundation for a new journeyman or apprentice welder, or supplemental skills for working welders.
  • Associate Degree Programs will take two years to complete and are most often offered by community colleges. An Associate Degree in Welding Technology provides a more well-rounded education than the certificate or diploma while still furnishing the foundation that prepares students to enter the workforce.

Many states and municipalities do have licensing requirements for welders, therefore make sure to find out for your location of potential employment. If required, the welding school you select should prepare you for any licensing examinations that you will have to take in addition to providing the suitable training to become a qualified welder.

Welding Certification Choices

welder working in Stockholm WI shopThere are several organizations that offer welder certifications, which assess the knowledge and skill level of those applying. Numerous Stockholm WI employers not only demand a certificate or degree from an accredited welding program, but also certification from a renowned organization like the American Welding Society (AWS). A variety of certifications are offered based on the type of work that the welder does. Some of the skills that certification can acknowledge are the welder’s ability to

  • Operate in compliance with specific codes
  • Work with specified metal thicknesses
  • Work with various types of welds
  • Perform based on contract specifications

As already stated, some cities, states or local municipalities have licensing requirements for welders. Of those requiring licensing, many additionally require certification for various types of work. Certification is also a means to prove to employers that you are a highly skilled and qualified welder. So similarly as with licensing, check the requirements for your location and make certain that the welder vocational school you choose prepares you for certification if needed.

Topics to Ask Welder Vocational Programs

What to ask Stockholm WI welding schoolsAfter you have decided on the credential you would like to earn, a degree, certificate or diploma, you can start to evaluate schools. As you probably know, there are numerous welder trade and vocational schools in the Stockholm WI area. That’s why it’s necessary to decide up front what qualifications your selected school must have. We have already covered 2 important ones that most people consider first, which are location and the cost of tuition. As mentioned, although they are essential qualifications, they are not the only ones that need to be looked at. After all, the school you select is going to provide the education that will be the foundation of your new profession as a welder. So below are some additional factors you might need to consider before choosing a welding technical school.

Accreditation. It’s very important that the welder technical school you pick is accredited by either a national or a regional organization. There are 2 standard kinds of accreditation. The school may earn Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on a specific program the school offers, for instance Welding Technology. So confirm that the program you choose is accredited, not just the school alone. Also, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, like the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). In addition to helping ensure that you obtain an excellent education, the accreditation may also help in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are often not offered in Stockholm WI for non-accredited schools. Finally, for those states or municipalities that mandate licensing, they may require that the welding training program be accredited also.

Apprenticeship and Job Assistance Programs. Numerous welding diploma or degree programs are offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship program. Other schools will help place you in an apprenticeship or a job upon graduation. Ask if the schools you are looking at assist in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job placement program. These schools must have partnerships with local unions and other metal working businesses to which they can place their students. More established schools may have a larger network of graduates that they can utilize for referrals. These programs can assist students in finding employment and develop associations within the Stockholm WI welding community.

Job Placement and Completion Rates. The completion rate is the percentage of students that begin an academic program and complete it. It’s important that the welding school you pick has a high completion rate. A reduced rate may signify that the students who were in the program were dissatisfied with the instruction, the teachers, or the facilities, and dropped out. The job placement rate is also an indication of the caliber of training. A higher job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of Stockholm WI contacts to help students secure employment or apprenticeships after graduation.

Modern Equipment and Facilities. Once you have decreased your choice of welder schools to two or three possibilities, you should think out going to the campuses to inspect their facilities. Make sure that both the equipment and the facilities that you will be instructed on are modern. Specifically, the training equipment should be similar to what you will be working with on the job. If you are unsure what to look for, and are already in an apprenticeship program, consult with the master welder you are working under for guidance. If not, ask a local Stockholm WI welding contractor if they can give you a few suggestions.

School Location. Although we already briefly talked about the importance of location, there are a few additional points that we should address. You should bear in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the welder program you choose must be within driving distance of your Stockholm WI home. If you do opt to attend an out-of-state school, besides moving costs there could be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is particularly the case for welding degree programs offered by community colleges. Furthermore, if the school offers an apprenticeship or job placement program, most likely their placements are within the school’s local community. So the location of the school needs to be in an area or state where you ultimately will desire to work.

Smaller Classes. One-on-one training is important for a manual trade such as welding. It’s easy to be overlooked in bigger classes and not get much one-on-one instruction. Find out what the typical class size is for the welding programs you are reviewing. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of classes so that you can experience just how much personal attention the students are getting. While there, talk with several of the students and get their feedback. Similarly, talk to some of the trainers and ask what their welding experience has been and what credentials and certifications they have earned.

Flexible Class Scheduling. Some people learn a new trade while still employed at their present job. Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are looking at are convenient enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evenings or on weekends near Stockholm WI, verify that the schools you are reviewing provide those choices. If you can only enroll part-time, verify that the school you decide on offers part-time enrollment. Also, check to see what the protocol is to make up classes if you you miss any due to illness, work or family emergencies.

Online Welder Certificate and Degree Programs

Stockholm WI master welder attending online welding classesWelding is very much a manual type of trade, and therefore not extremely suitable for training online. Having said that, there are a small number of online welding classes offered by various community colleges and trade schools in the greater Stockholm WI area that may count toward a certificate or degree program. These courses primarily deal with such topics as reading blueprints, safety,, and metallurgy. They can help give a beginner a basis to start their training and education. However, the most critical point is that you can’t learn how to weld or handle welding materials unless you actually do it. Obviously that can’t be performed online. These skills need to be learned in an on-campus setting or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is better suited for experienced welders that would like to advance their expertise or perhaps earn a more advanced degree. So if you should find an online welding certificate or degree program, be extremely careful and make sure that the bulk of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of environment.
