Welder Certificate and Degree Training Classes

welding car in Eagle WIThere are a number of options to receive training as a welder in a technical or trade school. You can earn a a certificate, a diploma or an Associate Degree. Bachelor Degrees are available in Welding Engineering or Welding Technology, but are more advanced courses than most journeyman welders will need. Some programs are also made available in conjunction with an apprenticeship program. Following are short explanations of the most prevalent welding programs offered in the Eagle WI area.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are generally made available by trade and technical schools and take about 1 year to finish. They are more hands-on training in nature, designed mainly to teach welding skills. They can furnish a good foundation for a new journeyman or apprentice welder, or supplemental skills for working welders.
  • Associate Degree Programs will take 2 years to finish and are most often offered by community colleges. An Associate Degree in Welding Technology furnishes a more well-rounded education than the certificate or diploma while still furnishing the foundation that readies students to enter the workforce.

A number of municipalities and states do have licensing requirements for welders, so don’t forget to check for your location of future employment. As required, the welder school you pick should prep you for any licensing examinations that you will need to take in addition to providing the appropriate training to become a qualified welder.

Welder Certification Choices

welder working in Eagle WI shopThere are a number of organizations that offer welding certifications, which test the knowledge and skill level of those applying. Numerous Eagle WI employers not only demand a degree or certificate from an accredited welding school, but also certification from a respected agency such as the American Welding Society (AWS). Different certifications are offered based upon the kind of work that the welder does. Some of the skills that certification can attest to are the welder’s ability to

  • Operate in compliance with specific codes
  • Work with specified metal thicknesses
  • Work with various kinds of welds
  • Work according to contract specifications

As already mentioned, some states, cities or local municipalities have licensing requirements for welders. Of those calling for licensing, a number additionally require certification for various kinds of work. Certification is also a way to demonstrate to employers that you are an extremely skilled and experienced welder. So similarly as with licensing, check the requirements for your local area and make sure that the welding tech school you decide on readies you for certification as needed.

Questions to Ask Welding Tech Schools

What to ask Eagle WI welding schoolsOnce you have chosen the credential you would like to obtain, a diploma, certificate or degree, you can begin to compare schools. As you probably know, there are numerous welding trade and vocational schools in the Eagle WI area. That’s why it’s essential to determine in advance what qualifications your selected school must have. We have previously discussed a couple of significant ones that many people consider first, which are location and the cost of tuition. As mentioned, although they are very important qualifiers, they are not the only ones that need to be considered. After all, the school you choose is going to provide the training that will be the foundation of your new vocation as a welder. So following are more factors you may need to consider before selecting a welding trade school.

Accreditation. It’s essential that the welder technical school you select is accredited by either a national or a regional agency. There are 2 basic kinds of accreditation. The school may receive Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on an individual program the school offers, such as Welding Technology. So make certain that the program you pick is accredited, not just the school alone. Also, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, for example the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). In addition to helping ensure that you receive a quality education, the accreditation can also assist in getting financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable in Eagle WI for schools that are not accredited. Also, for those states or local governments that require licensing, they may require that the welder training program be accredited also.

Job Placement and Apprenticeship Programs. Numerous welding degree or certificate programs are provided in conjunction with an apprenticeship program. Other schools will assist in placing you in an apprenticeship or a job after graduation. Ask if the schools you are looking at help in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job placement program. These schools must have partnerships with local unions and other metal working businesses to which they can refer their students. More established schools may have a larger network of graduates that they can utilize for placements. These programs can help students find employment and develop relationships within the Eagle WI welding community.

Job Placement and Completion Rates. The completion rate is the percentage of students that start an educational program and complete it. It’s important that the welder school you pick has a high completion rate. A low rate could signify that the students who enrolled in the program were dissatisfied with the instruction, the teachers, or the facilities, and quit. The job placement rate is also an indication of the quality of training. A higher job placement rate will not only verify that the program has an excellent reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of Eagle WI employer relationships to assist students secure employment or apprenticeships after graduation.

Modern Facilities and Equipment. Once you have narrowed down your selection of welder schools to 2 or 3 options, you should think out visiting the campuses to inspect their facilities. Confirm that both the equipment and the facilities that you will be instructed on are up-to-date. Specifically, the training equipment should be similar to what you will be using on the job. If you are unsure what to look for, and are currently in an apprenticeship program, ask the master welder you are working under for guidance. If not, ask a local Eagle WI welding professional if they can give you a few pointers.

School Location. Although we previously briefly covered the importance of location, there are a few additional issues that we should deal with. You should bear in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the welder program you choose must be within commuting distance of your Eagle WI home. If you do decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there might be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is particularly the case for welder certificate programs offered by community colleges. Furthermore, if the school offers a job placement or apprenticeship program, often their placements are within the school’s regional community. So the location of the school needs to be in a region or state where you ultimately will want to work.

Smaller Classes. Personalized instruction is essential for a hands-on trade such as welding. It’s possible to get lost in bigger classes and not get much one-on-one training. Ask what the average class size is for the welder programs you are looking at. Ask if you can attend some classes so that you can observe how much personal attention the students are receiving. While there, speak with a few of the students and get their feedback. Similarly, talk with a few of the trainers and find out what their welding experience has been and what credentials and certifications they hold.

Flexible Class Scheduling. Some people learn a new profession while still working at their current job. Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to satisfy your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evenings or on weekends near Eagle WI, confirm that the schools you are considering offer those alternatives. If you can only enroll part-time, confirm that the school you pick offers part-time enrollment. Also, find out what the policy is to make up classes should you miss any because of illness, work or family responsibilities.

Online Welder Degree and Certificate Programs

Eagle WI master welder attending online welding classesWelding is truly a manual type of vocation, and consequently not extremely suitable for online training. Even so, there are some online welding programs offered by various community colleges and trade schools in the greater Eagle WI area that may be credited toward a certificate or degree program. These classes primarily deal with such subjects as safety, reading blueprints, and metallurgy. They can help provide a beginner a basis to begin their training and education. However, the most important point is that you can’t learn how to weld or handle welding materials unless you actually do it. Clearly that can’t be done online. These skills have to be learned in an on-campus setting or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is more appropriate for experienced welders that want to advance their knowledge or possibly earn a more advanced degree. So if you should come across an online welding degree or certificate program, be very careful and confirm that the greater part of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of setting.
