Welding Certificate and Degree Training Programs

welding car in Addy WAThere are several options available to get training as a welder in a technical or trade school. You can receive a diploma, a certificate or an Associate Degree. Bachelor Degrees are offered in Welding Engineering or Welding Technology, but are more advanced programs than most journeyman welders will need. Some programs are also offered combined with an apprenticeship program. Following are short summaries of the most common welding programs offered in the Addy WA area.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are generally made available by trade and technical schools and take about 1 year to finish. They are more hands-on training in nature, created primarily to teach welding skills. They can provide a good foundation for a new journeyman or apprentice welder, or additional skills for experienced welders.
  • Associate Degree Programs will take two years to complete and are usually offered by community colleges. An Associate Degree in Welding Technology offers a more extensive education than the certificate or diploma while still supplying the foundation that prepares students to enter the workforce.

Some states and municipalities do have licensing requirements for welders, therefore don’t forget to check for your location of future employment. As needed, the welding school you pick should prep you for any licensing examinations that you will need to take in addition to providing the appropriate training to become a qualified welder.

Welding Certification Choices

welder working in Addy WA shopThere are various organizations that provide welder certifications, which evaluate the knowledge and skill level of those applying. A large number of Addy WA employers not only expect a degree or certificate from an accredited welding school, but also certification from a respected organization such as the American Welding Society (AWS). A wide range of certifications are offered based on the kind of work that the welder does. A few of the things that certification can acknowledge are the welder’s ability to

  • Operate in compliance with specific codes
  • Work with certain metal thicknesses
  • Work with specific types of welds
  • Perform based on contract specifications

As already stated, many states, cities or local municipalities have licensing requirements for welders. Of those mandating licensing, some also require certification for various kinds of work. Certification is also a way to demonstrate to employers that you are an exceptionally skilled and knowledgeable welder. So just as with licensing, check the requirements for your location and verify that the welding trade school you choose preps you for certification if needed.

What to Ask Welding Tech Schools

What to ask Addy WA welding schoolsOnce you have decided on the credential you want to attain, a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to evaluate schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are numerous welder vocational and trade schools in the Addy WA area. That’s why it’s important to determine up front what qualifications your selected school must have. We have already covered 2 important ones that most people look at first, which are location and tuition cost. As stated, although they are very important qualifications, they are not the only ones that must be considered. After all, the program you decide on is going to furnish the instruction that will be the foundation of your new profession as a welder. So below are more factors you might want to consider before picking a welding tech school.

Accreditation. It’s very important that the welding tech school you decide on is accredited by either a national or a regional organization. There are two standard kinds of accreditation. The school may attain Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on an individual program the school has, for example Welding Technology. So confirm that the program you pick is accredited, not just the school alone. Additionally, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, for example the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). Besides helping ensure that you obtain a superior education, the accreditation may also assist in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently not available in Addy WA for non-accredited schools. Also, for those states or local governments that require licensing, they may require that the welder training program be accredited as well.

Apprenticeship and Job Placement Programs. A large number of welder degree or certificate programs are provided in conjunction with an apprenticeship program. Other schools will help place you in a job or an apprenticeship upon graduation. Find out if the schools you are reviewing help in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job placement program. The schools should have partnerships with local unions and other metal working businesses to which they can refer their students. More established schools may have a larger network of graduates that they can utilize for referrals. These programs can assist students in finding employment and develop relationships within the Addy WA welding community.

Job Placement and Completion Rates. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students that begin an educational program and complete it. It’s important that the welder program you choose has a high completion rate. A lower rate might indicate that the students who enrolled in the program were unhappy with the instruction, the instructors, or the facilities, and quit. The job placement rate is also an indication of the quality of training. A higher job placement rate will not only confirm that the program has an excellent reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of Addy WA employer relationships to help students secure employment or apprenticeships upon graduation.

Modern Facilities and Equipment. Once you have decreased your choice of welder schools to two or three possibilities, you should consider going to the campuses to look over their facilities. Make sure that both the equipment and the facilities that you will be trained on are modern. Specifically, the training equipment should be similar to what you will be using in the field. If you are uncertain what to look for, and are already in an apprenticeship program, consult with the master welder you are working under for guidance. If not, ask a local Addy WA welding contractor if they can give you a few pointers.

School Location. Even though we already briefly discussed the relevance of location, there are a few additional points that we should address. You should remember that unless you are able to relocate, the welding program you select needs to be within commuting distance of your Addy WA home. If you do opt to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides moving expenses there may be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is especially the case for welding diploma programs offered by community colleges. Additionally, if the school provides a job placement or apprenticeship program, more than likely their placements are within the school’s local community. So the location of the school needs to be in an area or state where you subsequently will desire to work.

Small Classes. Personalized training is essential for a hands-on trade such as welding. It’s possible to get overlooked in bigger classes and not receive much one-on-one instruction. Find out what the average class size is for the welder schools you are reviewing. Ask if you can sit in on a few classes so that you can experience how much individual attention the students are receiving. While there, talk with a few of the students and get their feedback. Also, chat with some of the trainers and ask what their welding experience has been and what credentials and certifications they have earned.

Convenient Class Scheduling. Many people learn a new profession while still employed at their current job. Check to see that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are convenient enough to meet your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Addy WA, verify that the schools you are reviewing offer those options. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you choose offers part-time enrollment. Also, find out what the policy is to make up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family emergencies.

Online Welder Certificate and Degree Programs

Addy WA master welder attending online welding classesWelding is truly a hands-on type of vocation, and therefore not very compatible with training online. However, there are a few online welding programs offered by various community colleges and technical schools in the greater Addy WA area that can count toward a certificate or degree program. These classes primarily cover such topics as safety, reading blueprints, and metallurgy. They can help provide a novice a foundation to initiate their education and training. Nevertheless, the most critical point is that you can’t learn how to weld or handle welding materials unless you actually do it. Naturally that can’t be performed online. These skills need to be learned in an on-campus environment or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is more appropriate for seasoned welders that would like to advance their knowledge or possibly earn a more advanced degree. So if you should come across an online welding certificate or degree program, be extremely careful and verify that the larger part of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of setting.

However, as we have discussed in this article, there are several things that you will need to examine and compare between the schools you are reviewing. Classes need to be smaller in size and every student should have their own welding machine to train on. Classroom education should provide a real-world perspective, and the course of study should be current and conform with industry standards. Programs differ in duration and the kind of credential provided, so you will have to determine what length of program and credential will best serve your needs. Every program offers different options for certification also. Perhaps the best way to research your short list of schools is to visit each campus and talk with the students and faculty. Invest some time to sit in on a few classes. Inspect the campus and facilities. Make certain that you are confident that the school you choose is the right one for you. Addy, Washington

Addy was first settled in 1851 by Magnus Flett, a Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) employee, after he retired to the Addy area.[1][2] Thomas Stensgar retired from the Hudson's Bay Company in 1852[2] and obtained the first homestead in the area in 1867.[3] Addy was originally a Swiss dairy community[4]. Addy was named in 1890 by E. S. Dudrey, storekeeper and the town's first postmaster, for his wife Adeline, nicknamed Addy[4]. Addy became the stop between Chewelah and Colville on the Spokane Falls and Northern Railroad at the end of March 1892.[5] Addy was platted by G. Fatzer in 1893.[6] In 1975, Alcoa built a magnesium smelter,[7] which became the largest employer in the county. In 2001, Alcoa closed the plant due to unfavorable market conditions.[8] The first school was built in 1884 under Stevens County District 11. In 1967, the last Addy school was closed and students were bused to Chewelah.[9] A small town alongside State Route 395, Addy was not tracked by the 2000 U.S. Census, but in the 2010 census the population was 265. The town has one gas station, and a coffee shop. There is one restaurant in town, although several other businesses cater to the primarily agricultural local economy. Addy is assigned the ZIP code 99101.

This climatic region is typified by large seasonal temperature differences, with warm to hot (and often humid) summers and cold (sometimes severely cold) winters. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Addy has a humid continental climate, abbreviated "Dfb" on climate maps.[10]
