Welding Degree and Certificate Programs

Bachelor Degrees are available in Welding Engineering or Welding Technology, but are more advanced courses than most journeyman welders will need. Some programs are also made available along with an apprenticeship program. Following are brief descriptions of the most common welding programs available in the Lyles TN area.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are normally offered by trade and technical schools and take about one year to finish. They are more hands-on training in nature, created largely to teach welding skills. They can provide a good foundation for a new journeyman or apprentice welder, or additional skills for working welders.
  • Associate Degree Programs will take 2 years to finish and are usually offered by community colleges. An Associate Degree in Welding Technology provides a more extensive education than the certificate or diploma while still furnishing the foundation that prepares students to enter the workforce.

Many municipalities and states do have licensing prerequisites for welders, therefore don’t forget to check for your location of future employment. As required, the welder school you pick should ready you for any licensing examinations that you will have to pass in addition to supplying the appropriate training to become a professional welder.

Welder Certification Options

welder working in Lyles TN shopThere are a number of institutions that provide welder certifications, which evaluate the skill level and knowledge of those applying. Numerous Lyles TN employers not only expect a certificate or degree from an accredited welding program, but also certification from a renowned organization like the American Welding Society (AWS). A variety of certifications are offered dependent on the kind of work that the welder performs. Some of the skills that certification can attest to are the welder’s ability to

  • Work in compliance with specific codes
  • Work with certain metal thicknesses
  • Work with specific kinds of welds
  • Perform according to contract specifications

As already stated, some cities, states or local municipalities have licensing requirements for welders. Of those requiring licensing, some also require certification for different kinds of work. Certification is also a way to demonstrate to employers that you are a highly skilled and qualified welder. So similarly as with licensing, look into the requirements for your location and make sure that the welder vocational school you choose preps you for certification as needed.

Points to Ask Welder Vocational Programs

What to ask Lyles TN welding schoolsWhen you have chosen the credential you want to earn, a degree, certificate or diploma, you can begin to assess schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are numerous welding trade and vocational schools in the Lyles TN area. That’s why it’s necessary to establish up front what qualifications your selected school must have. We have already covered a couple of important ones that many people look at first, which are location and the cost of tuition. As stated, although they are very important qualifications, they are not the only ones that should be considered. After all, the program you select is going to furnish the education that will be the foundation of your new vocation as a welder. So following are some additional factors you may need to evaluate before picking a welder technical school.

Accreditation. It’s extremely important that the welding vocational school you choose is accredited by either a regional or a national agency. There are 2 standard types of accreditation. The school may attain Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on an individual program the school has, for example Welding Technology. So verify that the program you choose is accredited, not just the school itself. Also, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, for example the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). In addition to helping make sure that you get a superior education, the accreditation may also help in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases not offered in Lyles TN for non-accredited schools. Finally, for those states or local governments that require licensing, they may require that the welding training program be accredited also.

Job Placement and Apprenticeship Programs. Numerous welder diploma or degree programs are offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship program. Some other schools will assist in placing you in an apprenticeship or a job upon graduation. Find out if the schools you are looking at assist in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job placement program. The schools must have relationships with local unions and various metal working businesses to which they can refer their students. Older schools may have a more substantial network of graduates that they can rely upon for placements. These programs can help students find employment and develop associations within the Lyles TN welding community.

Job Placement and Completion Rates. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students that enroll in an academic program and complete it. It’s essential that the welder program you pick has a high completion rate. A low rate might signify that the students who enrolled in the program were unhappy with the training, the teachers, or the facilities, and quit. The job placement rate is also a good indicator of the caliber of training. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of Lyles TN contacts to help students secure apprenticeships or employment upon graduation.

Up-to-date Equipment and Facilities. After you have decreased your choice of welding programs to two or three possibilities, you should consider going to the campuses to inspect their facilities. Confirm that both the equipment and the facilities that you will be trained on are up-to-date. Specifically, the training equipment should be comparable to what you will be using in the field. If you are unsure what to look for, and are currently in an apprenticeship program, ask the master welder you are working under for guidance. If not, ask a local Lyles TN welding contractor if they can give you some tips.

School Location. Although we already briefly discussed the relevance of location, there are a couple of additional points that we need to deal with. You should keep in mind that unless you are able to move, the welder school you choose must be within commuting distance of your Lyles TN home. If you do choose to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides moving expenses there might be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is especially the case for welder diploma programs offered by community colleges. Additionally, if the school offers an apprenticeship or job placement program, more than likely their placements are within the school’s regional community. So the location of the school needs to be in an area or state where you ultimately will wish to work.

Smaller Classes. Personalized instruction is essential for a hands-on trade such as welding. It’s easy to get overlooked in bigger classes and not obtain much one-on-one training. Find out what the typical class size is for the welding schools you are looking at. Inquire if you can attend a couple of classes so that you can see how much individual attention the students are getting. While there, talk with several of the students and get their evaluations. Similarly, speak with a couple of the teachers and find out what their welding experience has been and what certifications and credentials they have earned.

Flexible Class Scheduling. Lots of folks learn a new profession while still employed at their present job. Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are looking at are convenient enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evenings or on weekends near Lyles TN, make sure that the schools you are looking at offer those alternatives. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, verify that the school you choose offers part-time enrollment. Also, check to see what the protocol is to make up classes if you you miss any because of work, sickness or family circumstances.

Online Welding Courses

Lyles TN master welder attending online welding classesWelding is very much a hands-on type of vocation, and consequently not extremely suitable for online training. However, there are a small number of online welding courses offered by certain community colleges and trade schools in the greater Lyles TN area that may count toward a certificate or degree program. These courses primarily deal with such subjects as safety, reading blueprints, and metallurgy. They can help give a novice a foundation to begin their education and training. Nevertheless, the most important point is that you can’t learn how to weld or work with welding materials until you actually do it. Obviously that can’t be performed online. These skills must be learned in an on-campus setting or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is more appropriate for seasoned welders that desire to advance their expertise or perhaps attain a more advanced degree. So if you should come across an online welding certificate or degree program, be very careful and make sure that the bulk of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of setting.

However, as we have addressed in this article, there are a number of factors that you will need to evaluate and compare between the schools you are considering. Classes should be small in size and each student must have their personal welding machine to train on. Classroom education needs to offer a real-world frame of reference, and the course of study should be current and conform with industry standards. Courses vary in length and the type of credential provided, so you will have to decide what length of program and degree or certificate will best fulfill your needs. Each program provides different options for certification also. Probably the best way to research your final list of schools is to check out each campus and speak with the teachers and students. Invest some time to sit in on a few classes. Inspect the campus and facilities. Make certain that you are confident that the school you pick is the ideal one for you. Lyles, Tennessee

Lyles is a census-designated place and unincorporated community in Hickman County, Tennessee. As of the 2010 census, its population was 734.[2] It is located along Tennessee State Route 100. The community has a handful of stores and churches, and is the location of Camp Okawehna.

Lyles was originally known as Lyell Station. William, John and Robert Lyell had much to do with the building of Lyell Station.[4] Their ancestors, Robert Lyell and Deborah Lawrence Lyell, came to Hickman County from Virginia before 1840[5]. [6] Lyles (or Lyell Station) was served by the Nashville, Chattanooga and St. Louis Railway. (See the 1903 diagram showing Lyles. [1]) Although there is no longer any rail service, the tracks remain in Lyles on Google Maps.

It is not known when Lyell Station came to be known as Lyles. To this day there are those whose surname is Lyell living in Lyles. Ed Lyell Road[7] was named after Ed Lyell who died in 1977. He was a descendant of the original Lyell settlers.[8] Other road names including McGee Road, Tidwell Lane, and Bishop Road bear witness to other early families of Lyles.[9]
