Welder Degree and Certificate Training Classes

welding car in Wakefield RIThere are a number of options to receive training as a welder in a trade or vocational school. You can receive a diploma, a certificate or an Associate Degree. Bachelor Degrees are available in Welding Engineering or Welding Technology, but are more advanced degrees than most journeyman welders will need. Some programs are also offered combined with an apprenticeship program. Following are short descriptions of the most typical welding programs available in the Wakefield RI area.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are generally offered by trade and technical schools and require about a year to finish. They are more hands-on training in nature, fashioned mainly to teach welding skills. They can furnish a good foundation for a new journeyman or apprentice welder, or specialized skills for working welders.
  • Associate Degree Programs will take two years to complete and are most often offered by community colleges. An Associate Degree in Welding Technology provides a more well-rounded education than the certificate or diploma while still supplying the foundation that prepares students to enter the workforce.

Some municipalities and states do have licensing requirements for welders, so make sure to check for your location of potential employment. If needed, the welding school you pick should prep you for any licensing examinations that you will need to pass in addition to furnishing the appropriate training to become a qualified welder.

Welding Certification Choices

welder working in Wakefield RI shopThere are a number of institutions that offer welding certifications, which evaluate the knowledge and skill level of those applying. Many Wakefield RI employers not only require a degree or certificate from an accredited welding school, but also certification from a respected agency such as the American Welding Society (AWS). A wide range of certifications are available based on the type of work that the welder performs. A few of the skills that certification can acknowledge are the welder’s ability to

  • Work in compliance with specific codes
  • Work with specific metal thicknesses
  • Work with specific types of welds
  • Work according to contract specifications

As previously stated, some cities, states or local municipalities have licensing requirements for welders. Of those calling for licensing, a number also require certification for various types of work. Certification is also a way to prove to employers that you are an exceptionally skilled and experienced welder. So just as with licensing, look into the requirements for your location and make certain that the welding trade school you decide on readies you for certification as needed.

Topics to Ask Welding Vocational Programs

What to ask Wakefield RI welding schoolsWhen you have chosen the credential you want to obtain, a degree, certificate or diploma, you can start to evaluate schools. As you probably know, there are numerous welding vocational and trade schools in the Wakefield RI area. That’s why it’s important to decide in advance what qualifications your school of choice must have. We have already covered two important ones that many people look at first, which are location and tuition cost. As stated, although they are very important qualifiers, they are not the only ones that need to be looked at. After all, the program you select is going to provide the training that will be the foundation of your new profession as a welder. So following are more factors you may want to evaluate before selecting a welding vocational school.

Accreditation. It’s essential that the welding trade school you select is accredited by either a regional or a national organization. There are two basic types of accreditation. The school may attain Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on an individual program the school offers, such as Welding Technology. So make sure that the program you choose is accredited, not just the school alone. Also, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, like the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). In addition to helping make sure that you obtain an excellent education, the accreditation may also assist in getting financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable in Wakefield RI for non-accredited schools. Finally, for those states or municipalities that mandate licensing, they may require that the welder training program be accredited also.

Apprenticeship and Job Assistance Programs. A large number of welding certificate or degree programs are provided in conjunction with an apprenticeship program. Some other schools will help place you in a job or an apprenticeship after graduation. Find out if the schools you are looking at assist in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job placement program. The schools must have associations with local unions and other metal working businesses to which they can place their students. More established schools may have a larger network of graduates that they can rely upon for referrals. These programs can assist students in finding employment and establish associations within the Wakefield RI welding community.

Job Placement and Completion Rates. The completion rate is the percentage of students that enroll in an academic program and complete it. It’s essential that the welding program you select has a higher completion rate. A reduced rate may mean that the students who joined the program were unhappy with the instruction, the instructors, or the facilities, and quit. The job placement rate is also an indication of the quality of training. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of Wakefield RI employer relationships to help students obtain employment or apprenticeships upon graduation.

Up-to-date Facilities and Equipment. After you have decreased your choice of welding schools to two or three possibilities, you should think out visiting the campuses to evaluate their facilities. Verify that both the facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are modern. Specifically, the training equipment should be similar to what you will be working with in the field. If you are uncertain what to look for, and are currently in an apprenticeship program, ask the master welder you are working under for guidance. Otherwise, ask a local Wakefield RI welding contractor if they can give you some pointers.

School Location. Although we previously briefly discussed the significance of location, there are a couple of additional points that we should deal with. You should bear in mind that unless you can relocate, the welding program you choose needs to be within driving distance of your Wakefield RI home. If you do opt to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there might be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is particularly the case for welding diploma programs offered by community colleges. Furthermore, if the school provides an apprenticeship or job placement program, more than likely their placements are within the school’s local community. So the location of the school needs to be in an area or state where you subsequently will desire to work.

Small Classes. Personalized training is important for a manual trade such as welding. It’s easy to be overlooked in larger classes and not receive much one-on-one instruction. Ask what the usual class size is for the welding schools you are considering. Ask if you can attend a couple of classes so that you can see how much individual attention the students are receiving. While there, speak with some of the students and get their feedback. Also, speak with a couple of the teachers and find out what their welding experience has been and what credentials and certifications they have earned.

Flexible Class Scheduling. Lots of folks learn a new trade while still employed at their present job. Check to see that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are convenient enough to meet your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Wakefield RI, confirm that the schools you are assessing provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the protocol is to make up classes if you you miss any because of work, illness or family emergencies.

Online Welding Training

Wakefield RI master welder attending online welding classesWelding is very much a hands-on kind of profession, and consequently not extremely suitable for online training. Even so, there are some online welding programs offered by certain community colleges and trade schools in the greater Wakefield RI area that can count toward a degree or certificate program. These courses primarily cover such subjects as reading blueprints, safety,, and metallurgy. They can help provide a novice a foundation to initiate their education and training. However, the most critical point is that you can’t learn how to weld or work with welding materials until you actually do it. Naturally that can’t be performed online. These skills need to be learned in an on-campus environment or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is more appropriate for seasoned welders that desire to advance their knowledge or perhaps obtain a more advanced degree. So if you should come across an online welding certificate or degree program, be very cautious and confirm that the bulk of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of environment.
