Bachelor Degrees are offered in Welding Engineering or Welding Technology, but are more advanced programs than most journeyman welders will need. Some programs are also made available along with an apprenticeship program. Following are short summaries of the most prevalent welding programs offered in the Stigler OK area.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are normally made available by trade and technical schools and take about 1 year to finish. They are more hands-on training in scope, fashioned mainly to teach welding skills. They can furnish a good foundation for a new journeyman or apprentice welder, or additional skills for experienced welders.
  • Associate Degree Programs will take 2 years to complete and are most often offered by community colleges. An Associate Degree in Welding Technology furnishes a more well-rounded education than the certificate or diploma while still supplying the foundation that readies students to enter the workforce.

Some municipalities and states do have licensing prerequisites for welders, therefore be sure to check for your location of potential employment. If required, the welder school you choose should prepare you for any licensing exams that you will have to pass in addition to furnishing the suitable training to become a professional welder.

Welder Certification Alternatives

welder working in Stigler OK shopThere are multiple organizations that provide welding certifications, which evaluate the knowledge and skill level of those applying. Many Stigler OK employers not only demand a certificate or degree from an accredited welding school, but also certification from a respected organization such as the American Welding Society (AWS). A wide range of certifications are available dependent on the type of work that the welder does. Just some of the skills that certification can attest to are the welder’s ability to

  • Operate in compliance with specific codes
  • Work with certain metal thicknesses
  • Work with certain kinds of welds
  • Work in compliance with contract specifications

As earlier mentioned, many states, cities or local municipalities have licensing requirements for welders. Of those requiring licensing, many also require certification for different types of work. Certification is also a way to prove to employers that you are an exceptionally skilled and experienced welder. So similarly as with licensing, check the requirements for your location and make certain that the welding trade school you decide on prepares you for certification as needed.

Points to Ask Welding Technical Programs

What to ask Stigler OK welding schoolsOnce you have decided on the credential you would like to attain, a certificate, diploma or degree, you can begin to assess schools. As you can imagine, there are a large number of welding vocational and trade schools in the Stigler OK area. That’s why it’s essential to decide up front what qualifications your chosen school must have. We have already discussed 2 significant ones that most people consider first, which are location and the cost of tuition. As stated, although they are very important qualifiers, they are not the only ones that need to be looked at. After all, the program you choose is going to provide the instruction that will be the foundation of your new vocation as a welder. So following are more factors you might need to consider before selecting a welder trade school.

Accreditation. It’s very important that the welder tech school you select is accredited by either a national or a regional agency. There are 2 basic kinds of accreditation. The school may attain Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on an individual program the school has, such as Welding Technology. So verify that the program you select is accredited, not just the school itself. Additionally, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, like the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). In addition to helping ensure that you get an excellent education, the accreditation might also help in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases not available in Stigler OK for non-accredited schools. Also, for those states or local governments that mandate licensing, they may require that the welder training program be accredited also.

Job Assistance and Apprenticeship Programs. A large number of welder degree or diploma programs are provided combined with an apprenticeship program. Various other schools will help place you in an apprenticeship or a job after graduation. Find out if the schools you are considering assist in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job assistance program. The schools must have relationships with local unions and various metal working businesses to which they can place their students. Older schools may have a larger network of graduates that they can utilize for referrals. These programs can help students find employment and establish associations within the Stigler OK welding community.

Job Placement and Completion Rates. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students that begin an educational program and complete it. It’s crucial that the welder program you pick has a high completion rate. A lower rate may mean that the students who were in the program were dissatisfied with the training, the instructors, or the facilities, and quit. The job placement rate is also an indication of the caliber of training. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the program has a good reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of Stigler OK employer relationships to help students obtain employment or apprenticeships upon graduation.

Modern Equipment and Facilities. After you have narrowed down your choice of welder schools to 2 or 3 possibilities, you should consider visiting the campuses to inspect their facilities. Confirm that both the facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are modern. In particular, the training equipment should be similar to what you will be working with on the job. If you are unsure what to look for, and are already in an apprenticeship program, consult with the master welder you are working under for guidance. Otherwise, ask a local Stigler OK welding contractor if they can give you some pointers.

School Location. Even though we previously briefly talked about the importance of location, there are a couple of additional issues that we need to deal with. You should remember that unless you can move, the welder program you pick must be within driving distance of your Stigler OK home. If you do opt to enroll in an out-of-state school, apart from relocation expenses there may be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is particularly true for welder diploma programs offered by community colleges. Additionally, if the school provides an apprenticeship or job placement program, often their placements are within the school’s regional community. So the location of the school should be in an area or state where you ultimately will desire to work.

Smaller Classes. Individualized instruction is essential for a manual trade such as welding. It’s easy to be overlooked in larger classes and not receive much individualized training. Find out what the usual class size is for the welder schools you are looking at. Inquire if you can sit in on a few classes so that you can observe how much individual attention the students are receiving. While there, talk with a few of the students and get their opinions. Similarly, talk with a couple of the trainers and ask what their welding experience has been and what credentials and certifications they hold.

Flexible Class Schedules. Some people learn a new profession while still employed at their present job. Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are convenient enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Stigler OK, make certain that the schools you are assessing provide those options. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you decide on offers part-time enrollment. Also, check to see what the protocol is to make up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family responsibilities.

Online Welder Courses

Stigler OK master welder attending online welding classesWelding is truly a hands-on type of trade, and consequently not extremely compatible with online training. However, there are a few online welding courses offered by certain community colleges and technical schools in the greater Stigler OK area that can count toward a degree or certificate program. These courses mainly deal with such subjects as safety, reading blueprints, and metallurgy. They can help provide a novice a foundation to initiate their education and training. However, the most critical point is that you can’t learn how to weld or use welding materials until you actually do it. Clearly that can’t be accomplished online. These skills must be learned in an on-campus environment or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is better suited for experienced welders that want to advance their knowledge or possibly obtain a more advanced degree. So if you should find an online welding degree or certificate program, be very cautious and confirm that the greater part of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of environment.

    Stigler, Oklahoma

Stigler is home to the Haskell County Courthouse, which has become notable for erecting marble statues of the Ten Commandments and the Mayflower Compact on the front lawn. (See Separation of church and state in the United States.) In the seventh commandment, the word "adultery" was misspelled as "adultry".[6] The Commandments statue has since been removed following a court ruling.

Stigler was founded in 1889 by Joseph Stigler, who originally named the town "Newman". (Earlier in his life, Stigler had been a deputy marshal serving under the notable federal judge Isaac Parker, whose court in Fort Smith, Arkansas, had jurisdiction over Indian Territory. The town was then located in the Choctaw Nation in Indian Territory.[7]) The post office name was changed to Stigler in 1893 by the U.S. Post Office Service, because the former name caused some confusion with the town of Norman. The Midland Valley Railroad came to Stigler in 1904, which attracted more settlers and more types of businesses. By the following year, the town had become incorporated. At statehood in 1907, Stigler was named as the county seat of newly created Haskell County.[7]

Stigler is located in central Haskell County at 35°15′23″N 95°7′27″W / 35.25639°N 95.12417°W / 35.25639; -95.12417 (35.256357, -95.124105).[8]Oklahoma State Highway 9 is the city's Main Street, and leads east 12 miles (19 km) to Keota and west 6 miles (9.7 km) to Whitefield. Oklahoma State Highway 82 leads south from Stigler 11 miles (18 km) to Lequire. Muskogee is 43 miles (69 km) to the north, and Fort Smith, Arkansas is 49 miles (79 km) to the east.
