Topics to Ask Welder Technical Schools

What to ask Reynoldsburg OH welding schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the credential you want to earn, a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to compare schools. As you can imagine, there are a large number of welding trade and technical schools in the Reynoldsburg OH area. That’s why it’s important to decide in advance what qualifications your selected school must have. We have previously covered two important ones that many people consider first, which are location and the cost of tuition. As mentioned, although they are essential qualifiers, they are not the only ones that need to be looked at. After all, the program you choose is going to provide the training that will be the foundation of your new vocation as a welder. So below are more factors you might want to consider before selecting a welder trade school.

Accreditation. It’s essential that the welding vocational school you choose is accredited by either a regional or a national organization. There are 2 standard types of accreditation. The school may earn Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on an individual program the school offers, for example Welding Technology. So verify that the program you pick is accredited, not just the school alone. Additionally, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, like the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). Besides helping make sure that you get a superior education, the accreditation may also help in getting financial aid or student loans, which are frequently not available in Reynoldsburg OH for schools that are not accredited. Also, for those states or municipalities that require licensing, they may require that the welder training program be accredited as well.

Apprenticeship and Job Assistance Programs. A large number of welder degree or diploma programs are provided in conjunction with an apprenticeship program. Other schools will assist in placing you in a job or an apprenticeship after graduation. Find out if the schools you are looking at help in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job assistance program. These schools must have partnerships with local unions and other metal working businesses to which they can place their students. Older schools may have a more substantial network of graduates that they can utilize for placements. These programs can help students find employment and establish relationships within the Reynoldsburg OH welding community.

Completion and Job Placement Rates. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students that enroll in an academic program and complete it. It’s essential that the welding program you choose has a high completion rate. A low rate may signify that the students who were in the program were dissatisfied with the instruction, the instructors, or the facilities, and dropped out. The job placement rate is also a good indicator of the quality of training. A higher job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of Reynoldsburg OH employer relationships to assist students secure employment or apprenticeships after graduation.

Up-to-date Equipment and Facilities. Once you have narrowed down your selection of welding programs to two or three possibilities, you should think out going to the campuses to evaluate their facilities. Make sure that both the equipment and the facilities that you will be taught on are up-to-date. Specifically, the training equipment should be similar to what you will be using on the job. If you are uncertain what to look for, and are already in an apprenticeship program, consult with the master welder you are working under for guidance. If not, ask a local Reynoldsburg OH welding professional if they can give you some suggestions.

School Location. Even though we already briefly discussed the significance of location, there are a couple of additional points that we should address. You should remember that unless you are able to relocate, the welding program you choose must be within commuting distance of your Reynoldsburg OH home. If you do opt to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there could be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is particularly the case for welding degree programs offered by community colleges. Furthermore, if the school provides an apprenticeship or job placement program, more than likely their placements are within the school’s regional community. So the location of the school needs to be in an area or state where you subsequently will desire to work.

Smaller Classes. One-on-one training is essential for a hands-on trade such as welding. It’s possible to get lost in larger classes and not get much one-on-one training. Find out what the usual class size is for the welder programs you are looking at. Inquire if you can sit in on a couple of classes so that you can observe just how much personal attention the students are getting. While there, speak with a few of the students and get their opinions. Similarly, chat with some of the instructors and ask what their welding experience has been and what credentials and certifications they have earned.

Convenient Class Schedules. Lots of folks learn a new profession while still employed at their current job. Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Reynoldsburg OH, make certain that the schools you are looking at provide those alternatives. If you can only enroll part-time, confirm that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, check to see what the protocol is to make up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family responsibilities.

Online Welding Schools

Reynoldsburg OH master welder attending online welding classesWelding is truly a hands-on kind of vocation, and for that reason not very suitable for online training. Even so, there are some online welding programs offered by various community colleges and trade schools in the greater Reynoldsburg OH area that can be credited toward a certificate or degree program. These courses primarily cover such subjects as reading blueprints, safety,, and metallurgy. They can help give a beginner a foundation to initiate their education and training. However, the most important point is that you can’t learn how to weld or handle welding materials unless you actually do it. Obviously that can’t be done online. These skills must be learned in an on-campus environment or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is better suited for seasoned welders that desire to advance their expertise or possibly obtain a more advanced degree. So if you should find an online welding degree or certificate program, be extremely careful and make certain that the greater part of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of setting.
