That’s why it’s essential to decide up front what qualifications your chosen school must have. We have already discussed 2 important ones that most people consider first, which are location and tuition cost. As mentioned, although they are very important qualifiers, they are not the only ones that must be looked at. After all, the school you choose is going to furnish the instruction that will be the foundation of your new profession as a welder. So following are more factors you may need to consider before picking a welding tech school.

Accreditation. It’s extremely important that the welding trade school you select is accredited by either a regional or a national organization. There are two standard types of accreditation. The school may attain Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on an individual program the school offers, for example Welding Technology. So make certain that the program you pick is accredited, not just the school itself. Additionally, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, such as the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). In addition to helping make sure that you get an excellent education, the accreditation may also assist in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases not offered in New Straitsville OH for schools that are not accredited. Finally, for those states or local governments that require licensing, they may require that the welder training program be accredited also.

Job Assistance and Apprenticeship Programs. Many welder degree or diploma programs are offered combined with an apprenticeship program. Some other schools will help place you in a job or an apprenticeship after graduation. Find out if the schools you are looking at assist in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job placement program. The schools should have relationships with local unions and various metal working businesses to which they can place their students. More established schools may have a more substantial network of graduates that they can rely upon for referrals. These programs can assist students in finding employment and establish relationships within the New Straitsville OH welding community.

Job Placement and Completion Rates. The completion rate is the percentage of students that start an educational program and complete it. It’s crucial that the welding school you select has a high completion rate. A low rate might mean that the students who enrolled in the program were unhappy with the instruction, the teachers, or the facilities, and dropped out. The job placement rate is also an indication of the caliber of training. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the program has an excellent reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of New Straitsville OH contacts to assist students obtain employment or apprenticeships after graduation.

Modern Facilities and Equipment. After you have narrowed down your selection of welder schools to 2 or 3 possibilities, you should consider visiting the campuses to evaluate their facilities. Confirm that both the facilities and the equipment that you will be taught on are modern. In particular, the training equipment should be similar to what you will be using in the field. If you are uncertain what to look for, and are currently in an apprenticeship program, ask the master welder you are working under for guidance. Otherwise, ask a local New Straitsville OH welding contractor if they can give you a few pointers.

School Location. Although we already briefly discussed the importance of location, there are a couple of additional issues that we should deal with. You should remember that unless you have the ability to move, the welder program you select needs to be within commuting distance of your New Straitsville OH home. If you do decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there may be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is particularly the case for welding certificate programs offered by community colleges. Additionally, if the school provides an apprenticeship or job placement program, more than likely their placements are within the school’s local community. So the location of the school should be in an area or state where you subsequently will desire to work.

Small Classes. Personalized instruction is essential for a hands-on trade such as welding. It’s easy to get lost in bigger classes and not get much one-on-one training. Find out what the typical class size is for the welder programs you are reviewing. Inquire if you can sit in on a few classes so that you can see just how much personal attention the students are getting. While there, talk with some of the students and get their evaluations. Also, speak with a couple of the instructors and find out what their welding experience has been and what credentials and certifications they hold.

Flexible Class Scheduling. Lots of folks learn a new profession while still employed at their current job. Check to see that the class schedules for the programs you are looking at are convenient enough to satisfy your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near New Straitsville OH, make sure that the schools you are reviewing offer those alternatives. If you can only enroll part-time, verify that the school you decide on offers part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the protocol is to make up classes if you you miss any because of work, illness or family circumstances.

Online Welding Training Programs

New Straitsville OH master welder attending online welding classesWelding is truly a hands-on type of vocation, and therefore not very suitable for training online. Even so, there are a few online welding classes offered by certain community colleges and vocational schools in the greater New Straitsville OH area that may count toward a certificate or degree program. These courses primarily deal with such topics as safety, reading blueprints, and metallurgy. They can help give a beginner a basis to start their education and training. However, the most important point is that you can’t learn how to weld or use welding materials until you actually do it. Naturally that can’t be performed online. These skills need to be learned in an on-campus setting or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is more appropriate for seasoned welders that want to advance their expertise or perhaps obtain a more advanced degree. So if you should find an online welding degree or certificate program, be very cautious and verify that the majority of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of setting.
