Topics to Ask Welding Trade Schools

What to ask Yadkinville NC welding schoolsAs soon as you have chosen the credential you want to obtain, a diploma, certificate or degree, you can begin to compare schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are a large number of welder vocational and trade schools in the Yadkinville NC area. That’s why it’s necessary to determine up front what qualifications your selected school must have. We have already discussed a couple of important ones that many people look at first, which are location and tuition cost. As mentioned, although they are very important qualifiers, they are not the only ones that must be looked at. After all, the program you pick is going to furnish the training that will be the foundation of your new career as a welder. So following are some additional factors you might want to consider before picking a welder technical school.

Accreditation. It’s essential that the welder technical school you decide on is accredited by either a regional or a national agency. There are 2 basic types of accreditation. The school may earn Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on an individual program the school has, for example Welding Technology. So make certain that the program you select is accredited, not just the school alone. Also, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, like the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). Besides helping ensure that you obtain a quality education, the accreditation may also help in getting financial aid or student loans, which are frequently not available in Yadkinville NC for non-accredited schools. Finally, for those states or local governments that mandate licensing, they may require that the welder training program be accredited as well.

Job Assistance and Apprenticeship Programs. Many welding certificate or degree programs are provided combined with an apprenticeship program. Other schools will assist in placing you in a job or an apprenticeship upon graduation. Find out if the schools you are considering assist in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job assistance program. The schools should have associations with local unions and various metal working businesses to which they can place their students. Older schools may have a larger network of graduates that they can rely upon for placements. These programs can assist students in finding employment and establish relationships within the Yadkinville NC welding community.

Job Placement and Completion Rates. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students that start an instructional program and finish it. It’s crucial that the welder school you select has a high completion rate. A reduced rate could signify that the students who joined the program were dissatisfied with the instruction, the teachers, or the facilities, and quit. The job placement rate is also a good indicator of the quality of training. A higher job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of Yadkinville NC contacts to assist students secure employment or apprenticeships upon graduation.

Modern Facilities and Equipment. Once you have limited your selection of welder programs to 2 or 3 options, you should think out visiting the campuses to look over their facilities. Make sure that both the equipment and the facilities that you will be instructed on are modern. In particular, the training equipment should be similar to what you will be using in the field. If you are unsure what to look for, and are already in an apprenticeship program, ask the master welder you are working under for guidance. If not, ask a local Yadkinville NC welding contractor if they can give you a few pointers.

School Location. Even though we already briefly talked about the significance of location, there are a few additional issues that we should cover. You should remember that unless you can relocate, the welder school you choose must be within driving distance of your Yadkinville NC home. If you do choose to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides moving expenses there might be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is particularly true for welding degree programs offered by community colleges. Also, if the school provides a job placement or apprenticeship program, often their placements are within the school’s regional community. So the location of the school needs to be in a region or state where you subsequently will desire to work.

Smaller Classes. One-on-one training is important for a manual trade such as welding. It’s possible to be overlooked in bigger classes and not receive much individualized training. Find out what the typical class size is for the welding programs you are looking at. Inquire if you can sit in on some classes so that you can experience just how much personal attention the students are getting. While there, talk with some of the students and get their evaluations. Also, chat with a few of the trainers and ask what their welding experience has been and what credentials and certifications they hold.

Convenient Class Schedules. Lots of folks learn a new profession while still employed at their present job. Check to see that the class schedules for the programs you are looking at are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Yadkinville NC, make sure that the schools you are reviewing offer those choices. If you can only enroll part-time, confirm that the school you decide on offers part-time enrollment. Also, find out what the policy is to make up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family responsibilities.

Online Welding Certificate and Degree Programs

Yadkinville NC master welder attending online welding classesWelding is very much a hands-on kind of trade, and for that reason not extremely suitable for training online. However, there are a few online welding programs offered by certain community colleges and trade schools in the greater Yadkinville NC area that can count toward a certificate or degree program. These courses primarily cover such subjects as reading blueprints, safety,, and metallurgy. They can help give a novice a basis to begin their education and training. Nevertheless, the most important point is that you can’t learn how to weld or handle welding materials unless you actually do it. Clearly that can’t be accomplished online. These skills need to be learned in an on-campus environment or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is more appropriate for experienced welders that want to advance their knowledge or perhaps obtain a more advanced degree. So if you should discover an online welding certificate or degree program, be very cautious and make certain that the larger part of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of environment.
