  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are normally offered by trade and technical schools and take about one year to finish. • Work in compliance with specific codes
  • Work with specific metal thicknesses
  • Work with certain types of welds

As previously mentioned, some states, cities or local municipalities have licensing requirements for welders. Of those calling for licensing, some additionally require certification for various types of work. So just as with licensing, check the requirements for your local area and make certain that the welding vocational school you choose preps you for certification as needed.

What to Ask Welding Tech Schools

What to ask Millbrook NY welding schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the credential you would like to earn, a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to assess schools. As you probably know, there are a large number of welder trade and technical schools in the Millbrook NY area. That’s why it’s necessary to determine in advance what qualifications your selected school must have. We have already discussed 2 significant ones that many people look at first, which are location and the cost of tuition. As mentioned, although they are essential qualifications, they are not the only ones that need to be considered. After all, the school you pick is going to provide the education that will be the foundation of your new vocation as a welder. So following are more factors you might want to consider before selecting a welding tech school.

Accreditation. It’s very important that the welder tech school you pick is accredited by either a national or a regional organization. There are 2 basic kinds of accreditation. The school may receive Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on a specific program the school has, such as Welding Technology. So make certain that the program you choose is accredited, not just the school itself. Additionally, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, like the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). In addition to helping ensure that you obtain a superior education, the accreditation can also assist in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently not offered in Millbrook NY for non-accredited schools. Finally, for those states or local governments that require licensing, they may require that the welding training program be accredited as well.

Apprenticeship and Job Placement Programs. Many welder degree or certificate programs are offered combined with an apprenticeship program. Various other schools will assist in placing you in a job or an apprenticeship after graduation. Ask if the schools you are reviewing assist in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job placement program. These schools should have associations with local unions and other metal working businesses to which they can place their students. Older schools may have a more substantial network of graduates that they can utilize for referrals. These programs can assist students in finding employment and develop associations within the Millbrook NY welding community.

Completion and Job Placement Rates. The completion rate is the percentage of students that enroll in an instructional program and complete it. It’s crucial that the welding school you pick has a higher completion rate. A reduced rate could indicate that the students who were in the program were unhappy with the instruction, the teachers, or the facilities, and dropped out. The job placement rate is also an indication of the quality of training. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the program has an excellent reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of Millbrook NY employer relationships to assist students secure employment or apprenticeships after graduation.

Up-to-date Facilities and Equipment. After you have limited your selection of welder schools to 2 or 3 options, you should consider going to the campuses to look over their facilities. Verify that both the facilities and the equipment that you will be taught on are up-to-date. Specifically, the training equipment should be similar to what you will be working with on the job. If you are uncertain what to look for, and are already in an apprenticeship program, consult with the master welder you are working under for guidance. If not, ask a local Millbrook NY welding contractor if they can give you some pointers.

School Location. Even though we previously briefly covered the importance of location, there are a few additional points that we need to cover. You should bear in mind that unless you are able to move, the welding school you select needs to be within commuting distance of your Millbrook NY home. If you do choose to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there might be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is particularly true for welder certificate programs offered by community colleges. Also, if the school offers a job placement or apprenticeship program, often their placements are within the school’s regional community. So the location of the school needs to be in a region or state where you ultimately will desire to work.

Small Classes. One-on-one training is essential for a hands-on trade such as welding. It’s easy to get lost in bigger classes and not get much one-on-one instruction. Find out what the usual class size is for the welding schools you are looking at. Ask if you can sit in on some classes so that you can observe just how much personal attention the students are receiving. While there, speak with a few of the students and get their opinions. Similarly, talk with some of the trainers and ask what their welding experience has been and what certifications and credentials they hold.

Flexible Class Scheduling. Lots of folks learn a new profession while still working at their current job. Check to see that the class schedules for the programs you are looking at are convenient enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Millbrook NY, confirm that the schools you are reviewing provide those options. If you can only enroll part-time, make certain that the school you pick offers part-time enrollment. Also, find out what the protocol is to make up classes if you you miss any due to work, sickness or family emergencies.

Online Welding Certificate and Degree Programs

Millbrook NY master welder attending online welding classesWelding is truly a hands-on kind of vocation, and for that reason not extremely compatible with online training. However, there are a small number of online welding programs offered by specific community colleges and vocational schools in the greater Millbrook NY area that can be credited toward a certificate or degree program. These classes mainly cover such subjects as reading blueprints, safety,, and metallurgy. They can help give a beginner a basis to start their education and training. However, the most significant point is that you can’t learn how to weld or use welding materials until you actually do it. Naturally that can’t be performed online. These skills must be learned in an on-campus environment or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is better suited for experienced welders that want to advance their expertise or possibly earn a more advanced degree. So if you should come across an online welding certificate or degree program, be very careful and confirm that the greater part of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of setting.
