  • Operate in compliance with specific codes

  • Work in compliance with contract specifications

As previously stated, many states, cities or local municipalities have licensing requirements for welders. So similarly as with licensing, check the requirements for your local area and make sure that the welder technical school you decide on preps you for certification as needed.

What to Ask Welding Technical Programs

What to ask Malone NY welding schoolsAs soon as you have chosen the credential you would like to obtain, a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to evaluate schools. As you can imagine, there are numerous welding trade and technical schools in the Malone NY area. That’s why it’s important to establish up front what qualifications your school of choice must have. We have already discussed two important ones that most people look at first, which are location and tuition cost. As stated, although they are essential qualifiers, they are not the only ones that need to be considered. After all, the school you decide on is going to provide the training that will be the foundation of your new career as a welder. So following are more factors you may want to evaluate before selecting a welding vocational school.

Accreditation. It’s extremely important that the welder vocational school you choose is accredited by either a regional or a national agency. There are two standard kinds of accreditation. The school may receive Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on an individual program the school has, such as Welding Technology. So confirm that the program you select is accredited, not just the school alone. Additionally, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, such as the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). Besides helping ensure that you get a superior education, the accreditation might also help in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are often not available in Malone NY for schools that are not accredited. Also, for those states or municipalities that require licensing, they may require that the welder training program be accredited also.

Apprenticeship and Job Placement Programs. Many welding degree or diploma programs are offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship program. Some other schools will assist in placing you in a job or an apprenticeship after graduation. Find out if the schools you are reviewing help in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job placement program. These schools must have partnerships with local unions and other metal working businesses to which they can place their students. More established schools may have a larger network of graduates that they can utilize for referrals. These programs can help students find employment and establish relationships within the Malone NY welding community.

Completion and Job Placement Rates. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students that start an educational program and complete it. It’s important that the welder school you select has a high completion rate. A low rate could mean that the students who joined the program were unhappy with the training, the teachers, or the facilities, and dropped out. The job placement rate is also a good indicator of the caliber of training. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of Malone NY employer relationships to assist students secure apprenticeships or employment after graduation.

Modern Facilities and Equipment. After you have decreased your choice of welder programs to 2 or 3 options, you should consider going to the campuses to look over their facilities. Confirm that both the equipment and the facilities that you will be trained on are up-to-date. Specifically, the training equipment should be similar to what you will be using in the field. If you are uncertain what to look for, and are currently in an apprenticeship program, ask the master welder you are working under for guidance. If not, ask a local Malone NY welding professional if they can give you some tips.

School Location. Although we already briefly talked about the significance of location, there are a few additional issues that we should address. You should bear in mind that unless you have the ability to move, the welding program you select must be within commuting distance of your Malone NY home. If you do opt to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving expenses there may be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is especially true for welder certificate programs offered by community colleges. Additionally, if the school provides an apprenticeship or job placement program, most likely their placements are within the school’s local community. So the location of the school should be in a region or state where you ultimately will wish to work.

Smaller Classes. Individualized instruction is important for a hands-on trade such as welding. It’s possible to be overlooked in larger classes and not obtain much one-on-one instruction. Find out what the average class size is for the welder schools you are looking at. Ask if you can attend a couple of classes so that you can experience how much individual attention the students are receiving. While there, speak with a few of the students and get their evaluations. Also, chat with a couple of the teachers and find out what their welding experience has been and what certifications and credentials they hold.

Convenient Class Schedules. Lots of folks learn a new trade while still employed at their current job. Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are looking at are flexible enough to satisfy your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Malone NY, make certain that the schools you are considering provide those alternatives. If you can only enroll part-time, verify that the school you decide on offers part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the policy is to make up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family responsibilities.

Online Welder Certificate and Degree Programs

Malone NY master welder attending online welding classesWelding is very much a manual type of vocation, and consequently not very suitable for training online. Having said that, there are a small number of online welding programs offered by various community colleges and vocational schools in the greater Malone NY area that can be credited toward a degree or certificate program. These courses mainly deal with such topics as reading blueprints, safety,, and metallurgy. They can help provide a beginner a basis to begin their education and training. Nevertheless, the most critical point is that you can’t learn how to weld or work with welding materials until you actually do it. Obviously that can’t be performed online. These skills must be learned in an on-campus environment or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is more appropriate for experienced welders that desire to advance their expertise or possibly attain a more advanced degree. So if you should find an online welding certificate or degree program, be very cautious and make certain that the larger part of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of environment.
