Welding Degree and Certificate Training

welding car in Hopewell Junction NYThere are several options available to receive training as a welder in a trade or vocational school. You can receive a diploma, a certificate or an Associate Degree. Bachelor Degrees are offered in Welding Engineering or Welding Technology, but are more advanced degrees than most journeyman welders will need. Some programs are also offered along with an apprenticeship program. Below are brief explanations of the most prevalent welding programs offered in the Hopewell Junction NY area.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are normally made available by trade and technical schools and take about one year to complete. They are more hands-on training in scope, created largely to develop welding skills. They can furnish a good foundation for a new journeyman or apprentice welder, or specialized skills for experienced welders.
  • Associate Degree Programs will take 2 years to finish and are most often offered by community colleges. An Associate Degree in Welding Technology provides a more well-rounded education than the diploma or certificate while still furnishing the foundation that readies students to enter the workforce.

A number of municipalities and states do have licensing requirements for welders, so don’t forget to find out for your location of future employment. If required, the welder school you pick should prep you for any licensing exams that you will have to take in addition to supplying the appropriate training to become a professional welder.

Welder Certification Alternatives

welder working in Hopewell Junction NY shopThere are multiple institutions that offer welding certifications, which assess the knowledge and skill level of those applying. Many Hopewell Junction NY employers not only require a certificate or degree from an accredited welding school, but also certification from a renowned organization like the American Welding Society (AWS). A variety of certifications are available dependent on the type of work that the welder performs. A few of the things that certification can attest to are the welder’s ability to

  • Work in compliance with specific codes
  • Work with specific metal thicknesses
  • Work with various kinds of welds
  • Perform based on contract specifications

As previously mentioned, some states, cities or local municipalities have licensing requirements for welders. Of those requiring licensing, many additionally require certification for different kinds of work. Certification is also a means to prove to employers that you are an extremely skilled and knowledgeable welder. So just as with licensing, check the requirements for your local area and verify that the welder vocational school you decide on preps you for certification if needed.

Points to Ask Welding Vocational Programs

What to ask Hopewell Junction NY welding schoolsOnce you have decided on the credential you would like to obtain, a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to assess schools. As you can imagine, there are a large number of welder vocational and trade schools in the Hopewell Junction NY area. That’s why it’s necessary to determine in advance what qualifications your chosen school must have. We have previously covered two significant ones that most people consider first, which are location and tuition cost. As mentioned, although they are very important qualifications, they are not the only ones that should be looked at. After all, the program you decide on is going to provide the training that will be the foundation of your new vocation as a welder. So following are more factors you may want to evaluate before picking a welder tech school.

Accreditation. It’s essential that the welder trade school you select is accredited by either a regional or a national agency. There are two basic kinds of accreditation. The school may earn Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on an individual program the school has, for example Welding Technology. So make certain that the program you pick is accredited, not just the school itself. Additionally, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, for example the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). In addition to helping ensure that you obtain an excellent education, the accreditation can also assist in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are often not available in Hopewell Junction NY for non-accredited schools. Finally, for those states or municipalities that mandate licensing, they may require that the welding training program be accredited as well.

Job Placement and Apprenticeship Programs. Numerous welding degree or certificate programs are offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship program. Some other schools will assist in placing you in an apprenticeship or a job upon graduation. Find out if the schools you are reviewing help in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job assistance program. The schools should have relationships with local unions and various metal working businesses to which they can refer their students. Older schools may have a larger network of graduates that they can utilize for placements. These programs can help students find employment and establish relationships within the Hopewell Junction NY welding community.

Completion and Job Placement Rates. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students that start an instructional program and finish it. It’s important that the welding program you pick has a high completion rate. A low rate might indicate that the students who enrolled in the program were dissatisfied with the training, the instructors, or the facilities, and dropped out. The job placement rate is also an indication of the quality of training. A higher job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of Hopewell Junction NY employer relationships to help students secure employment or apprenticeships after graduation.

Up-to-date Facilities and Equipment. After you have limited your selection of welding programs to 2 or 3 options, you should think out going to the campuses to inspect their facilities. Verify that both the equipment and the facilities that you will be taught on are up-to-date. In particular, the training equipment should be similar to what you will be working with on the job. If you are not sure what to look for, and are currently in an apprenticeship program, consult with the master welder you are working under for guidance. If not, ask a local Hopewell Junction NY welding professional if they can give you a few tips.

School Location. Even though we already briefly talked about the importance of location, there are a few additional issues that we need to cover. You should bear in mind that unless you can move, the welding program you choose needs to be within driving distance of your Hopewell Junction NY home. If you do decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, apart from moving costs there might be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is especially true for welder certificate programs offered by community colleges. Additionally, if the school offers an apprenticeship or job placement program, often their placements are within the school’s local community. So the location of the school should be in a region or state where you subsequently will desire to work.

Smaller Classes. Personalized training is important for a manual trade such as welding. It’s possible to get overlooked in larger classes and not obtain much personalized training. Find out what the usual class size is for the welding programs you are reviewing. Inquire if you can sit in on some classes so that you can see how much personal attention the students are receiving. While there, talk with a few of the students and get their feedback. Also, talk to a few of the teachers and ask what their welding experience has been and what credentials and certifications they hold.

Convenient Class Scheduling. Lots of folks learn a new trade while still working at their current job. Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are looking at are convenient enough to satisfy your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evenings or on weekends near Hopewell Junction NY, verify that the schools you are assessing provide those alternatives. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, confirm that the school you pick offers part-time enrollment. Also, check to see what the policy is to make up classes if you you miss any due to work, illness or family emergencies.

Online Welder Certificate and Degree Programs

Hopewell Junction NY master welder attending online welding classesWelding is very much a manual type of vocation, and consequently not very compatible with online training. However, there are a few online welding courses offered by specific community colleges and technical schools in the greater Hopewell Junction NY area that can be credited toward a certificate or degree program. These courses mainly cover such subjects as reading blueprints, safety,, and metallurgy. They can help provide a beginner a foundation to initiate their training and education. However, the most significant point is that you can’t learn how to weld or use welding materials unless you actually do it. Naturally that can’t be performed online. These skills have to be learned in an on-campus setting or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is better suited for seasoned welders that want to advance their expertise or perhaps obtain a more advanced degree. So if you should find an online welding degree or certificate program, be extremely cautious and make sure that the larger part of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of setting.
