  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are normally offered by technical and trade schools and take about a year to finish. They can provide a good foundation for a new journeyman or apprentice welder, or specialized skills for experienced welders.
  • Associate Degree Programs will take two years to finish and are most often offered by community colleges. An Associate Degree in Welding Technology offers a more well-rounded education than the certificate or diploma while still furnishing the foundation that readies students to enter the workforce.

  • Work in compliance with specific codes
  • Work with certain metal thicknesses
  • Work with certain kinds of welds
  • Work according to contract specifications

As formerly mentioned, various states, cities or local municipalities have licensing mandates for welders. Of those requiring licensing, some also require certification for various kinds of work. Certification is also a way to prove to employers that you are an extremely skilled and qualified welder. So similarly as with licensing, check the requirements for your location and confirm that the welder technical school you choose preps you for certification if needed.

Questions to Ask Welding Trade Schools

What to ask Rochelle Park NJ welding schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the credential you want to earn, a certificate, diploma or degree, you can begin to compare schools. As you can imagine, there are many welding trade and vocational schools in the Rochelle Park NJ area. That’s why it’s important to establish up front what qualifications your school of choice must have. We have previously discussed a couple of significant ones that most people consider first, which are location and the cost of tuition. As mentioned, although they are very important qualifications, they are not the only ones that should be looked at. After all, the school you pick is going to furnish the training that will be the foundation of your new vocation as a welder. So below are some additional factors you might need to consider before picking a welding tech school.

Accreditation. It’s essential that the welding technical school you choose is accredited by either a regional or a national organization. There are 2 basic types of accreditation. The school may earn Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on an individual program the school has, for instance Welding Technology. So confirm that the program you pick is accredited, not just the school alone. Additionally, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, for example the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). In addition to helping ensure that you obtain an excellent education, the accreditation might also help in getting financial assistance or student loans, which are often not offered in Rochelle Park NJ for schools that are not accredited. Also, for those states or municipalities that mandate licensing, they may require that the welder training program be accredited also.

Job Assistance and Apprenticeship Programs. A large number of welder diploma or degree programs are provided in conjunction with an apprenticeship program. Other schools will assist in placing you in a job or an apprenticeship upon graduation. Find out if the schools you are considering assist in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job placement program. The schools should have associations with local unions and various metal working businesses to which they can refer their students. Older schools may have a more substantial network of graduates that they can utilize for referrals. These programs can help students find employment and establish associations within the Rochelle Park NJ welding community.

Completion and Job Placement Rates. The completion rate is the percentage of students that enroll in an instructional program and complete it. It’s crucial that the welding school you select has a higher completion rate. A reduced rate may indicate that the students who were in the program were unhappy with the training, the instructors, or the facilities, and dropped out. The job placement rate is also a good indicator of the quality of training. A higher job placement rate will not only confirm that the program has a good reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of Rochelle Park NJ employer relationships to assist students secure apprenticeships or employment upon graduation.

Up-to-date Facilities and Equipment. After you have decreased your choice of welder programs to 2 or 3 options, you should think out going to the campuses to evaluate their facilities. Confirm that both the equipment and the facilities that you will be instructed on are modern. In particular, the training equipment should be similar to what you will be working with on the job. If you are unsure what to look for, and are already in an apprenticeship program, consult with the master welder you are working under for guidance. If not, ask a local Rochelle Park NJ welding contractor if they can give you a few pointers.

School Location. Even though we already briefly covered the relevance of location, there are a few additional points that we should deal with. You should bear in mind that unless you can move, the welder program you select needs to be within commuting distance of your Rochelle Park NJ home. If you do opt to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there might be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is particularly the case for welding diploma programs offered by community colleges. Also, if the school provides a job placement or apprenticeship program, most likely their placements are within the school’s regional community. So the location of the school needs to be in a region or state where you ultimately will want to work.

Small Classes. One-on-one training is important for a manual trade such as welding. It’s easy to get lost in larger classes and not obtain much one-on-one instruction. Ask what the average class size is for the welder schools you are reviewing. Inquire if you can sit in on a few classes so that you can observe just how much personal attention the students are getting. While there, speak with several of the students and get their evaluations. Also, talk to some of the trainers and find out what their welding experience has been and what certifications and credentials they hold.

Convenient Class Schedules. Many people learn a new trade while still employed at their current job. Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are considering are flexible enough to satisfy your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Rochelle Park NJ, make sure that the schools you are considering provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you pick offers part-time enrollment. Also, check to see what the policy is to make up classes if you you miss any because of work, sickness or family responsibilities.

Online Welding Degree and Certificate Programs

Rochelle Park NJ master welder attending online welding classesWelding is very much a hands-on type of profession, and therefore not very suitable for training online. Even so, there are a few online welding programs offered by specific community colleges and technical schools in the greater Rochelle Park NJ area that can be credited toward a certificate or degree program. These classes primarily deal with such topics as safety, reading blueprints, and metallurgy. They can help provide a novice a basis to begin their training and education. Nevertheless, the most important point is that you can’t learn how to weld or work with welding materials until you actually do it. Naturally that can’t be accomplished online. These skills must be learned in an on-campus environment or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is better suited for seasoned welders that would like to advance their expertise or possibly earn a more advanced degree. So if you should come across an online welding certificate or degree program, be very careful and make certain that the greater part of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of setting.

Classroom instruction should provide a real-world perspective, and the curriculum should be current and conform with industry standards. Each program provides unique options for certification as well. Perhaps the best means to research your short list of schools is to check out each campus and talk with the students and faculty. Rochelle Park, New Jersey

Rochelle Park is a township in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the township's population was 5,530,[9][10][11] reflecting an increase of 2 (+0.0%) from the 5,528 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn declined by 59 (-1.1%) from the 5,587 counted in the 1990 Census.[20]

What is now Rochelle Park was originally incorporated as Midland Township on March 7, 1871, from portions of New Barbadoes Township. Portions of the township were taken to form the boroughs of Delford (on March 8, 1894; now Oradell), Maywood (June 30, 1894), Riverside (also June 30, 1894; now River Edge) and Paramus (March 2, 1922). Rochelle Park was formed as a township by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on November 5, 1929, replacing Midland Township, based on the results of a referendum held on that same day that passed by a 503-69 margin.[21] The main impetus behind the change in name was to avoid confusion with the nearby community of Midland Park.[22] The township was named for the port city of La Rochelle, France.[23][24]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township had a total area of 1.063 square miles (2.751 km2), including 1.041 square miles (2.695 km2) of land and 0.022 square miles (0.056 km2) of water (2.03%).[1][2]
