Questions to Ask Welder Trade Programs

What to ask Alton Bay NH welding schoolsAfter you have decided on the credential you want to obtain, a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to compare schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are numerous welding trade and technical schools in the Alton Bay NH area. That’s why it’s important to decide in advance what qualifications your chosen school must have. We have already covered two important ones that most people look at first, which are location and tuition cost. As stated, although they are essential qualifiers, they are not the only ones that should be considered. After all, the program you pick is going to provide the education that will be the foundation of your new profession as a welder. So following are some additional factors you might want to consider before choosing a welding vocational school.

Accreditation. It’s extremely important that the welder tech school you select is accredited by either a regional or a national organization. There are 2 standard types of accreditation. The school may earn Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on an individual program the school has, for instance Welding Technology. So confirm that the program you choose is accredited, not just the school itself. Additionally, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, like the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). Besides helping make sure that you get a quality education, the accreditation can also help in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently not offered in Alton Bay NH for non-accredited schools. Also, for those states or municipalities that mandate licensing, they may require that the welding training program be accredited as well.

Apprenticeship and Job Placement Programs. Many welder degree or certificate programs are offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship program. Some other schools will help place you in a job or an apprenticeship upon graduation. Ask if the schools you are considering assist in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job assistance program. These schools must have partnerships with local unions and other metal working businesses to which they can place their students. Older schools may have a more substantial network of graduates that they can rely upon for placements. These programs can help students find employment and establish associations within the Alton Bay NH welding community.

Job Placement and Completion Rates. The completion rate is the percentage of students that begin an academic program and complete it. It’s crucial that the welder school you pick has a higher completion rate. A lower rate may indicate that the students who enrolled in the program were unhappy with the instruction, the teachers, or the facilities, and quit. The job placement rate is also an indication of the quality of training. A higher job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of Alton Bay NH contacts to assist students secure apprenticeships or employment upon graduation.

Up-to-date Equipment and Facilities. Once you have narrowed down your selection of welder programs to two or three possibilities, you should think out visiting the campuses to evaluate their facilities. Verify that both the facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are modern. Specifically, the training equipment should be comparable to what you will be working with in the field. If you are uncertain what to look for, and are already in an apprenticeship program, ask the master welder you are working under for guidance. If not, ask a local Alton Bay NH welding professional if they can give you some tips.

School Location. Even though we already briefly talked about the relevance of location, there are a few additional points that we should cover. You should bear in mind that unless you have the ability to relocate, the welder school you select needs to be within driving distance of your Alton Bay NH home. If you do decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation expenses there might be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is especially the case for welding certificate programs offered by community colleges. Additionally, if the school offers an apprenticeship or job placement program, more than likely their placements are within the school’s local community. So the location of the school needs to be in a region or state where you ultimately will want to work.

Small Classes. Individualized training is important for a manual trade such as welding. It’s possible to get overlooked in bigger classes and not get much individualized instruction. Ask what the typical class size is for the welding programs you are looking at. Ask if you can attend some classes so that you can experience just how much individual attention the students are getting. While there, speak with some of the students and get their opinions. Also, talk with a couple of the trainers and ask what their welding experience has been and what certifications and credentials they have earned.

Convenient Class Schedules. Many people learn a new profession while still employed at their current job. Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are looking at are convenient enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evenings or on weekends near Alton Bay NH, confirm that the schools you are looking at offer those choices. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, confirm that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, find out what the protocol is to make up classes should you miss any because of illness, work or family circumstances.

Online Welder Classes

Alton Bay NH master welder attending online welding classesWelding is truly a manual type of vocation, and for that reason not extremely suitable for training online. However, there are some online welding programs offered by specific community colleges and vocational schools in the greater Alton Bay NH area that can count toward a certificate or degree program. These courses mainly cover such subjects as safety, reading blueprints, and metallurgy. They can help provide a novice a foundation to initiate their education and training. However, the most important point is that you can’t learn how to weld or use welding materials unless you actually do it. Naturally that can’t be performed online. These skills must be learned in an on-campus environment or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is better suited for experienced welders that want to advance their knowledge or perhaps obtain a more advanced degree. So if you should discover an online welding degree or certificate program, be extremely careful and verify that the bulk of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of setting.
