Welder Degree and Certificate Training

welding car in Bonner MTThere are multiple options available to obtain training as a welder in a trade or vocational school. You can earn a a certificate, a diploma or an Associate Degree. Bachelor Degrees are available in Welding Technology or Welding Engineering, but are more advanced degrees than most journeyman welders will need. Some programs are also made available combined with an apprenticeship program. Below are brief descriptions of the most typical welding programs available in the Bonner MT area.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are usually offered by trade and technical schools and require about a year to finish. They are more hands-on training in scope, designed mainly to develop welding skills. They can provide a good foundation for a new journeyman or apprentice welder, or additional skills for experienced welders.
  • Associate Degree Programs will take two years to finish and are usually offered by community colleges. An Associate Degree in Welding Technology offers a more extensive education than the diploma or certificate while still furnishing the foundation that prepares students to enter the workforce.

Some states and municipalities do have licensing prerequisites for welders, so make sure to find out for your location of future employment. As needed, the welder school you choose should prep you for any licensing exams that you will need to pass in addition to furnishing the proper training to become a qualified welder.

Welder Certification Alternatives

welder working in Bonner MT shopThere are various institutions that provide welding certifications, which assess the skill level and knowledge of those applying. A large number of Bonner MT employers not only expect a degree or certificate from an accredited welding school, but also certification from a renowned organization such as the American Welding Society (AWS). Different certifications are available based upon the kind of work that the welder does. A few of the things that certification can acknowledge are the welder’s ability to

  • Work in compliance with specific codes
  • Work with certain metal thicknesses
  • Work with various kinds of welds
  • Perform in compliance with contract specifications

As earlier stated, various cities, states or local municipalities have licensing mandates for welders. Of those requiring licensing, a number additionally require certification for different types of work. Certification is also a way to demonstrate to employers that you are a highly skilled and experienced welder. So just as with licensing, look into the requirements for your local area and make certain that the welder trade school you select preps you for certification if needed.

Points to Ask Welder Technical Programs

What to ask Bonner MT welding schoolsAfter you have chosen the credential you want to earn, a diploma, certificate or degree, you can begin to evaluate schools. As you can imagine, there are many welder vocational and trade schools in the Bonner MT area. That’s why it’s important to determine up front what qualifications your selected school must have. We have previously covered two important ones that many people consider first, which are location and the cost of tuition. As mentioned, although they are very important qualifiers, they are not the only ones that must be considered. After all, the program you decide on is going to provide the instruction that will be the foundation of your new vocation as a welder. So below are more factors you might want to consider before selecting a welder technical school.

Accreditation. It’s very important that the welder vocational school you choose is accredited by either a national or a regional organization. There are 2 standard kinds of accreditation. The school may attain Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on an individual program the school has, for instance Welding Technology. So make sure that the program you select is accredited, not just the school itself. Additionally, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, like the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). In addition to helping ensure that you obtain a superior education, the accreditation may also assist in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases not offered in Bonner MT for schools that are not accredited. Finally, for those states or municipalities that require licensing, they may require that the welding training program be accredited as well.

Job Placement and Apprenticeship Programs. Many welding certificate or degree programs are offered combined with an apprenticeship program. Other schools will help place you in an apprenticeship or a job upon graduation. Find out if the schools you are reviewing assist in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job placement program. The schools must have relationships with local unions and other metal working businesses to which they can place their students. Older schools may have a more substantial network of graduates that they can rely upon for referrals. These programs can help students find employment and develop relationships within the Bonner MT welding community.

Job Placement and Completion Rates. The completion rate is the percentage of students that begin an academic program and complete it. It’s crucial that the welding program you select has a higher completion rate. A low rate could indicate that the students who enrolled in the program were unhappy with the instruction, the instructors, or the facilities, and quit. The job placement rate is also an indication of the caliber of training. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of Bonner MT contacts to help students secure apprenticeships or employment after graduation.

Up-to-date Equipment and Facilities. After you have decreased your choice of welding programs to 2 or 3 possibilities, you should consider visiting the campuses to look over their facilities. Confirm that both the facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date. In particular, the training equipment should be similar to what you will be using in the field. If you are not sure what to look for, and are already in an apprenticeship program, consult with the master welder you are working under for guidance. Otherwise, ask a local Bonner MT welding contractor if they can give you some tips.

School Location. Even though we previously briefly discussed the significance of location, there are a couple of additional points that we should address. You should keep in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the welding program you select must be within commuting distance of your Bonner MT home. If you do choose to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides relocation expenses there could be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is particularly the case for welder certificate programs offered by community colleges. Furthermore, if the school provides an apprenticeship or job placement program, more than likely their placements are within the school’s local community. So the location of the school needs to be in a region or state where you ultimately will desire to work.

Small Classes. Personalized training is essential for a manual trade such as welding. It’s possible to be lost in larger classes and not get much individualized instruction. Find out what the usual class size is for the welding schools you are reviewing. Inquire if you can attend some classes so that you can observe just how much personal attention the students are getting. While there, talk with some of the students and get their feedback. Similarly, chat with a couple of the instructors and find out what their welding experience has been and what credentials and certifications they have earned.

Convenient Class Schedules. Many people learn a new profession while still employed at their present job. Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are convenient enough to satisfy your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Bonner MT, confirm that the schools you are reviewing offer those choices. If you can only attend part-time, verify that the school you pick offers part-time enrollment. Also, check to see what the protocol is to make up classes if you you miss any because of work, sickness or family responsibilities.

Online Welder Classes

Bonner MT master welder attending online welding classesWelding is very much a hands-on type of vocation, and therefore not very suitable for online training. Even so, there are a small number of online welding classes offered by certain community colleges and trade schools in the greater Bonner MT area that can count toward a degree or certificate program. These courses mainly deal with such topics as reading blueprints, safety,, and metallurgy. They can help give a novice a foundation to begin their education and training. Nevertheless, the most significant point is that you can’t learn how to weld or use welding materials unless you actually do it. Obviously that can’t be performed online. These skills must be learned in an on-campus setting or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is better suited for seasoned welders that want to advance their expertise or perhaps obtain a more advanced degree. So if you should discover an online welding degree or certificate program, be very cautious and confirm that the larger part of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of environment.
