Whitefish, Montana

Whitefish (Salish: epɫx̣ʷy̓u, "has whitefish"[5]) is a city in Flathead County, Montana, United States. The population was 6,357 at the 2010 census. It is home to a ski resort on Big Mountain called Whitefish Mountain Resort.

The Great Northern Railway was built through what is now Whitefish in 1904, which sparked development of the town. The area was originally known as Stumptown due to the abundant amount of timber that had to be cleared to build the town and railroad and because tree stumps were left in the streets throughout downtown.[6] Early residents of the town worked for the railroad and nearby logging industries.[7] By the late 1940s, with the successful construction of a ski resort on Big Mountain (a collaboration among local businessmen) the tourism sector was becoming increasingly important. The community was named for its location near Whitefish Lake.[8][9]

In 2006, over 68,000 passengers embarked and disembarked through the historic Whitefish Depot, a stop on Amtrak's Empire Builder line,[10] with some percentage of those being headed to the ski resort on Big Mountain.

Whitehall, Montana

The town is nestled in the Jefferson Valley, which is shadowed by the Tobacco Root and Highland Mountain ranges and sits in the heart of the Deerlodge National Forest. It is also within 23–60 miles of three major airports, four colleges, five ski resorts, seven major rivers, mountain lakes for fishing and backpacking, four lakes for boating, and three hot springs. There are numerous snowmobiling trails for winter riding and summer trail rides. The mountain ranges surrounding the valley, provide excellent opportunitiy for hunting big game.[4]

Whitehall began as a rail depot created by the Northern Pacific and Montana Railroad on September 25, 1889. The name for the depot came from E.G. Brooke, who was inspired by a similar town he stayed in Illinois while making his way westward. On September 3, 1890, the Jefferson County Commissioners accepted and filed the Townsite of Whitehall.

Public education in the town of Whitehall is provided by Whitehall School District.[13] The district includes Whitehall Elementary School (grades K-6), Whitehall Middle School (grades 7-8), and Whitehall High School (grades 9-12).

Wibaux County, Montana

Wibaux County (/ˈwiːboʊ/ WEE-boh) is a county in the U.S. state of Montana. As of the 2010 United States Census, the population was 1,017[2] making it the fourth-least populous county in Montana. Its county seat is Wibaux.[3]

Wibaux County was created by the Montana Legislature in 1914 from parts of Dawson, Fallon, and Richland Counties. The name comes from Pierre Wibaux (1858–1913),[4] a late 19th-century cattle baron and friend of Theodore Roosevelt whose ranch was just over the border (in Dakota Territory, later North Dakota). According to legend, Pierre Wibaux's cowboys surrounded the town of Mingusville, and wouldn't let anyone enter or leave town unless they signed a petition changing the name of the town to Wibaux. Upon his death, his ashes were spread over a hill west of Wibaux. Today, a statue of Pierre Wibaux stands on that hill.

According to the US Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 890 square miles (2,300 km2), of which 889 square miles (2,300 km2) is land and 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2) (0.07%) is water.[5] It is the third-smallest county in Montana by land area.

Willow Creek, Montana

Willow Creek is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Gallatin County, Montana, United States. The population was 210 at the 2010 census.[1] It is part of the Bozeman, MT Micropolitan Statistical Area.

Willow Creek is located in western Gallatin County at 45°49′38″N 111°38′7″W / 45.82722°N 111.63528°W / 45.82722; -111.63528 (45.827110, -111.635392),[2] where the valley of Willow Creek (the stream) enters the valley of the Jefferson River. It is 6 miles (10 km) southwest of Three Forks and 7 miles (11 km) southwest of Interstate 90.

As of the census[3] of 2000, there were 209 people, 81 households, and 52 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 192.4 people per square mile (74.0/km²). There were 84 housing units at an average density of 77.3 per square mile (29.8/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 92.34% White, 0.96% Asian, 0.48% Pacific Islander, 3.83% from other races, and 2.39% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.26% of the population.

Wilsall, Montana

Wilsall is located in central Montana, 29 miles (46 km) northeast of Boseman, 78 miles (125 km) east-southeast of Helena, and 105 miles (169 km) west of Billings. According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 1.0 square mile (2.6 km2), all of it land.

This climatic region is typified by large seasonal temperature differences, with warm to hot (and often humid) summers and cold (sometimes severely cold) winters. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Wilsall has a humid continental climate, abbreviated "Dfb" on climate maps.[1]

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 237 people, 102 households, and 68 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 234.5 people per square mile (90.6/km2). There were 119 housing units at an average density of 117.7 per square mile (45.5/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 95.36% White, 1.69% Native American, 2.95% from other races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.95% of the population.

Winifred, Montana

Winifred is a small town in rural north-central Fergus County, Montana, United States, founded in 1913 and providing services for its region's populace. The town population was 208 at the 2010 census.

Winifred was founded in 1913 as the terminus of a newly built branch line of the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad ("the Milwaukee Road"). It is popularly believed to have been named after one of the railroad owner's two daughters (the other being Christina, another small town about 15 miles away).

As of the census[2] of 2010, there were 208 people, 92 households, and 65 families residing in the town. The population density was 416.0 inhabitants per square mile (160.6/km2). There were 116 housing units at an average density of 232.0 per square mile (89.6/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 94.7% White, 1.0% African American, 3.4% Native American, 0.5% from other races, and 0.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.0% of the population.

Winnett, Montana

Winnett was named for Walter John Winnett, who was born at the Queen's Hotel in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Winnett ran away from home as a boy, seeking adventure in "Indian country." His excellent marksmanship abilities helped him get jobs with outfits who were always looking for someone who could keep them in fresh meat. When he was captured by Sioux Indians and later adopted into the tribe, he was given the name Eagle Eyes because of his remarkable shooting skills.

Winnett established a ranch in Montana Territory in 1879 near an active trading post and the Hangman's Tree used by vigilantes in the area. The massive ranch house, which he built in 1900 housed his own family and served as a gathering place for the community. Dances, weddings, funerals, church services, and school were all held here. Billings was the closest town, so Winnett built up a freight line business to haul supplies. Each of his outfits consisted of ten to twenty horses and huge wagons. In 1910 he built a store and petitioned for a post office.[5]

In addition to county government offices, Winnett's businesses and services include a grocery store, two filling stations, a post office, a school system with grades K-12, and two bar-and-grills; the hotel has closed, and the nearest medical facilities are in Lewistown, Montana.

Wolf Point, Montana

Wolf Point is a city in and the county seat of Roosevelt County, Montana, United States.[4] The population was 2,621 at the 2010 census.[5] It is the largest community on the Fort Peck Indian Reservation. Wolf Point is the home of the annual Wild Horse Stampede, held every year during the second weekend of July. Wolf Point's Wild Horse Stampede is the oldest rodeo in Montana, and has been called the "Grandaddy of Montana Rodeos".[6][7][8]

Wolf Point is located in north-eastern Montana in the wide, shallow valley of the Missouri River, just below its confluence with Wolf Creek. Wolf Point is situated on the High Plains of eastern Montana. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.88 square miles (2.28 km2), all land.[1]

The city is located on the north bank of the Missouri River, the southern part occupying the ancestral floodplain of that river. The northern part occupies south facing, low-lying hills overlooking a terrace.[9] The central business district is located in the described southern portion.

Anaconda Range

The Anaconda Range, informally known as the "Pintlers", is a group of high mountains located in southwestern Montana, in the northwestern United States. The mountain range takes its name from the nearby town of Anaconda, founded by Marcus Daly in 1883.[1] It runs northeast approximately 50 miles (80 km) from Lost Trail Pass to a point near the community of Anaconda, covering parts of Ravalli, Deer Lodge, Granite and Beaverhead Counties. To the northwest are the Sapphire Mountains, to the south is the Big Hole Valley. Due north, the range blends into the Flint Creek Range, and to the southeast lies the Big Hole River and Pioneer Mountains. The crest of the range is part of the Continental Divide, rising to 10,793 feet (3290 m) at West Goat Peak. Other major summits include Mt. Evans (10,641 ft, 3243 m), Mt. Haggin (10,607 ft, 3233 m), Warren Peak (10,463 ft, 3189 m), and East Goat Peak (10,399 ft, 3170 m). West Pintler Peak, located in a more commonly visited area, rises to 9894 feet (2895 m). Much of the range is protected in the Anaconda-Pintler Wilderness Area.

Plentywood, Montana

The first business in Plentywood opened in 1900, and a post office was established two years later. The city incorporated in 1912,[6] following the arrival of a Great Northern Railway branch line that eventually ran from Bainville to Opheim.[7] Local folklore suggests that the name of the nearby Plentywood Creek, after which the city was named, comes from a search for firewood. One day, according to the story, a group of cowboys watched in exasperation as the chuck wagon cook attempted to start a fire with damp buffalo chips. Finally, in frustration, Dutch Henry said, "If you’ll go 2 miles up this creek, you’ll find plenty wood."

As of the census[2] of 2010, there were 1,734 people, 820 households, and 462 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,482.1 inhabitants per square mile (572.2/km2). There were 972 housing units at an average density of 830.8 per square mile (320.8/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 95.0% White, 0.2% African American, 1.7% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.3% from other races, and 2.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.1% of the population.

There were 820 households of which 22.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.2% were married couples living together, 7.1% had a female householder with no husband present, 4.0% had a male householder with no wife present, and 43.7% were non-families. 40.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 18.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.02 and the average family size was 2.68.
