Numerous Lizton IN employers not only expect a degree or certificate from an accredited welding program, but also certification from a respected agency such as the American Welding Society (AWS). A variety of certifications are available based on the type of work that the welder performs. A few of the skills that certification can acknowledge are the welder’s ability to

  • Operate in compliance with specific codes
  • Work with specified metal thicknesses
  • Work with certain types of welds
  • Perform according to contract specifications

As previously mentioned, various states, cities or local municipalities have licensing requirements for welders. Of those requiring licensing, a number additionally require certification for different kinds of work. Certification is also a way to prove to employers that you are an extremely skilled and qualified welder. So just as with licensing, check the requirements for your local area and confirm that the welding tech school you select prepares you for certification if needed.

Topics to Ask Welding Vocational Programs

What to ask Lizton IN welding schoolsAfter you have chosen the credential you want to earn, a degree, certificate or diploma, you can start to assess schools. As you can imagine, there are many welder vocational and trade schools in the Lizton IN area. That’s why it’s necessary to determine up front what qualifications your selected school must have. We have previously covered a couple of significant ones that many people consider first, which are location and tuition cost. As mentioned, although they are very important qualifiers, they are not the only ones that need to be looked at. After all, the program you select is going to furnish the instruction that will be the foundation of your new career as a welder. So following are some additional factors you may need to consider before choosing a welding trade school.

Accreditation. It’s extremely important that the welder technical school you decide on is accredited by either a national or a regional agency. There are 2 basic types of accreditation. The school may earn Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on a specific program the school offers, such as Welding Technology. So confirm that the program you choose is accredited, not just the school itself. Also, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, for example the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). Besides helping make sure that you obtain a superior education, the accreditation may also assist in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable in Lizton IN for schools that are not accredited. Finally, for those states or local governments that require licensing, they may require that the welding training program be accredited as well.

Job Placement and Apprenticeship Programs. Many welding degree or certificate programs are provided in conjunction with an apprenticeship program. Other schools will assist in placing you in a job or an apprenticeship after graduation. Ask if the schools you are reviewing assist in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job assistance program. These schools should have relationships with local unions and other metal working businesses to which they can place their students. Older schools may have a larger network of graduates that they can rely upon for referrals. These programs can help students find employment and develop relationships within the Lizton IN welding community.

Job Placement and Completion Rates. The completion rate is the percentage of students that start an educational program and finish it. It’s essential that the welding school you select has a higher completion rate. A low rate could signify that the students who joined the program were unhappy with the instruction, the teachers, or the facilities, and quit. The job placement rate is also an indication of the caliber of training. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of Lizton IN employer relationships to help students secure apprenticeships or employment upon graduation.

Modern Equipment and Facilities. After you have limited your selection of welding schools to two or three possibilities, you should consider visiting the campuses to inspect their facilities. Make sure that both the equipment and the facilities that you will be instructed on are modern. Specifically, the training equipment should be comparable to what you will be working with in the field. If you are not sure what to look for, and are currently in an apprenticeship program, ask the master welder you are working under for guidance. Otherwise, ask a local Lizton IN welding contractor if they can give you some suggestions.

School Location. Even though we previously briefly talked about the relevance of location, there are a few additional points that we need to address. You should bear in mind that unless you have the ability to relocate, the welder program you select must be within driving distance of your Lizton IN home. If you do decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to moving expenses there could be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is especially the case for welding degree programs offered by community colleges. Furthermore, if the school offers an apprenticeship or job placement program, often their placements are within the school’s regional community. So the location of the school needs to be in an area or state where you subsequently will want to work.

Smaller Classes. Individualized training is essential for a hands-on trade such as welding. It’s possible to be lost in larger classes and not receive much one-on-one instruction. Ask what the average class size is for the welding schools you are reviewing. Ask if you can sit in on a few classes so that you can witness just how much individual attention the students are getting. While there, speak with several of the students and get their feedback. Similarly, talk to a few of the trainers and find out what their welding experience has been and what certifications and credentials they hold.

Convenient Class Schedules. Lots of folks learn a new trade while still employed at their current job. Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Lizton IN, make certain that the schools you are looking at offer those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, verify that the school you decide on offers part-time enrollment. Also, check to see what the protocol is to make up classes if you you miss any because of illness, work or family circumstances.

Online Welder Schools

Lizton IN master welder attending online welding classesWelding is very much a hands-on type of trade, and for that reason not very suitable for online training. Having said that, there are a few online welding courses offered by certain community colleges and vocational schools in the greater Lizton IN area that can count toward a degree or certificate program. These courses mainly cover such topics as safety, reading blueprints, and metallurgy. They can help give a novice a foundation to begin their training and education. However, the most significant point is that you can’t learn how to weld or handle welding materials unless you actually do it. Clearly that can’t be accomplished online. These skills have to be learned in an on-campus environment or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is better suited for seasoned welders that would like to advance their knowledge or perhaps earn a more advanced degree. So if you should find an online welding degree or certificate program, be extremely cautious and make certain that the bulk of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of setting.
