Some programs are also made available along with an apprenticeship program. Below are brief descriptions of the most common welding programs available in the Post Falls ID area.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are generally made available by trade and technical schools and require about one year to finish. They are more hands-on training in nature, designed primarily to develop welding skills. They can furnish a good foundation for a new journeyman or apprentice welder, or additional skills for working welders.
  • Associate Degree Programs will take two years to complete and are most often offered by community colleges. An Associate Degree in Welding Technology provides a more extensive education than the diploma or certificate while still furnishing the foundation that prepares students to enter the workforce.

Many states and municipalities do have licensing requirements for welders, therefore make sure to find out for your location of future employment. Welder Certification Options

welder working in Post Falls ID shopThere are multiple institutions that provide welding certifications, which test the knowledge and skill level of those applying. Numerous Post Falls ID employers not only expect a degree or certificate from an accredited welding program, but also certification from a highly regarded agency such as the American Welding Society (AWS). A variety of certifications are available based upon the kind of work that the welder performs. Just some of the things that certification can acknowledge are the welder’s ability to

  • Operate in compliance with specific codes
  • Work with specified metal thicknesses
  • Work with certain types of welds
  • Perform based on contract specifications

As already stated, many cities, states or local municipalities have licensing requirements for welders. Of those requiring licensing, some additionally require certification for different kinds of work. Certification is also a way to prove to employers that you are an exceptionally skilled and experienced welder. So similarly as with licensing, check the requirements for your local area and make sure that the welder technical school you decide on prepares you for certification if needed.

Points to Ask Welding Trade Schools

What to ask Post Falls ID welding schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the credential you want to obtain, a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to evaluate schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are many welder trade and vocational schools in the Post Falls ID area. That’s why it’s essential to establish up front what qualifications your selected school must have. We have previously discussed two significant ones that most people consider first, which are location and tuition cost. As stated, although they are essential qualifiers, they are not the only ones that must be looked at. After all, the school you pick is going to furnish the training that will be the foundation of your new profession as a welder. So below are some additional factors you may need to consider before selecting a welding trade school.

Accreditation. It’s very important that the welder technical school you choose is accredited by either a national or a regional organization. There are two standard types of accreditation. The school may earn Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on an individual program the school has, such as Welding Technology. So confirm that the program you pick is accredited, not just the school itself. Additionally, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, for example the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). In addition to helping ensure that you receive a superior education, the accreditation might also help in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are often not available in Post Falls ID for non-accredited schools. Also, for those states or local governments that require licensing, they may require that the welding training program be accredited also.

Job Assistance and Apprenticeship Programs. Many welder certificate or degree programs are provided in conjunction with an apprenticeship program. Some other schools will assist in placing you in a job or an apprenticeship after graduation. Find out if the schools you are considering assist in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job placement program. These schools should have relationships with local unions and various metal working businesses to which they can place their students. More established schools may have a more substantial network of graduates that they can utilize for placements. These programs can help students find employment and establish associations within the Post Falls ID welding community.

Completion and Job Placement Rates. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students that start an educational program and finish it. It’s essential that the welding school you select has a high completion rate. A reduced rate may indicate that the students who joined the program were dissatisfied with the training, the instructors, or the facilities, and dropped out. The job placement rate is also a good indicator of the caliber of training. A higher job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of Post Falls ID contacts to help students obtain apprenticeships or employment upon graduation.

Modern Equipment and Facilities. Once you have limited your choice of welding programs to 2 or 3 possibilities, you should consider going to the campuses to look over their facilities. Verify that both the facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date. Specifically, the training equipment should be similar to what you will be using in the field. If you are unsure what to look for, and are already in an apprenticeship program, ask the master welder you are working under for guidance. If not, ask a local Post Falls ID welding professional if they can give you a few tips.

School Location. Although we previously briefly talked about the importance of location, there are a couple of additional points that we should address. You should remember that unless you are able to relocate, the welder school you pick must be within commuting distance of your Post Falls ID home. If you do opt to attend an out-of-state school, apart from relocation expenses there might be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is especially true for welding certificate programs offered by community colleges. Additionally, if the school offers an apprenticeship or job placement program, most likely their placements are within the school’s regional community. So the location of the school should be in a region or state where you subsequently will desire to work.

Smaller Classes. Individualized instruction is essential for a manual trade such as welding. It’s easy to get lost in bigger classes and not receive much personalized instruction. Ask what the typical class size is for the welding schools you are considering. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of classes so that you can observe how much individual attention the students are getting. While there, speak with several of the students and get their feedback. Similarly, talk to a couple of the trainers and find out what their welding experience has been and what credentials and certifications they have earned.

Convenient Class Schedules. Lots of folks learn a new profession while still employed at their present job. Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are convenient enough to satisfy your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evenings or on weekends near Post Falls ID, confirm that the schools you are assessing offer those alternatives. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify that the school you decide on offers part-time enrollment. Also, check to see what the policy is to make up classes should you miss any because of illness, work or family emergencies.

Online Welding Schools

Post Falls ID master welder attending online welding classesWelding is truly a manual kind of vocation, and therefore not very compatible with online training. Even so, there are a few online welding classes offered by specific community colleges and technical schools in the greater Post Falls ID area that may count toward a degree or certificate program. These classes mainly cover such topics as safety, reading blueprints, and metallurgy. They can help give a beginner a foundation to begin their training and education. However, the most significant point is that you can’t learn how to weld or handle welding materials until you actually do it. Obviously that can’t be performed online. These skills have to be learned in an on-campus environment or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is better suited for seasoned welders that desire to advance their expertise or perhaps earn a more advanced degree. So if you should come across an online welding degree or certificate program, be very cautious and verify that the bulk of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of setting.
