Some programs are also made available in conjunction with an apprenticeship program. Following are short explanations of the most typical welding programs available in the Indian Rocks Beach FL area.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are usually made available by trade and technical schools and take about 1 year to finish. They are more hands-on training in scope, fashioned primarily to develop welding skills. They can furnish a good foundation for a new journeyman or apprentice welder, or specialized skills for experienced welders.
  • Associate Degree Programs will take two years to complete and are most often offered by community colleges. An Associate Degree in Welding Technology offers a more well-rounded education than the diploma or certificate while still furnishing the foundation that readies students to enter the workforce.

A wide range of certifications are offered dependent on the kind of work that the welder does. Some of the things that certification can attest to are the welder’s ability to

  • Work in compliance with specific codes
  • Work with specified metal thicknesses
  • Work with various types of welds
  • Perform according to contract specifications

As already stated, some cities, states or local municipalities have licensing requirements for welders. Of those mandating licensing, a number also require certification for various kinds of work. Certification is also a means to demonstrate to employers that you are an exceptionally skilled and experienced welder. So just as with licensing, check the requirements for your local area and make sure that the welder tech school you choose readies you for certification if needed.

Topics to Ask Welder Tech Programs

What to ask Indian Rocks Beach FL welding schoolsAs soon as you have chosen the credential you want to earn, a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to compare schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are a large number of welding vocational and trade schools in the Indian Rocks Beach FL area. That’s why it’s essential to decide up front what qualifications your school of choice must have. We have previously covered 2 important ones that many people consider first, which are location and the cost of tuition. As mentioned, although they are very important qualifiers, they are not the only ones that must be considered. After all, the school you choose is going to furnish the training that will be the foundation of your new career as a welder. So following are more factors you may want to evaluate before selecting a welding tech school.

Accreditation. It’s very important that the welding tech school you decide on is accredited by either a national or a regional agency. There are two basic kinds of accreditation. The school may receive Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on a specific program the school offers, for example Welding Technology. So make certain that the program you select is accredited, not just the school itself. Also, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, such as the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). In addition to helping ensure that you receive an excellent education, the accreditation may also assist in securing financial aid or student loans, which are frequently not offered in Indian Rocks Beach FL for non-accredited schools. Also, for those states or municipalities that mandate licensing, they may require that the welder training program be accredited as well.

Job Assistance and Apprenticeship Programs. Many welding degree or diploma programs are offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship program. Some other schools will assist in placing you in an apprenticeship or a job after graduation. Find out if the schools you are considering assist in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job assistance program. The schools should have relationships with local unions and other metal working businesses to which they can refer their students. Older schools may have a larger network of graduates that they can utilize for referrals. These programs can assist students in finding employment and establish relationships within the Indian Rocks Beach FL welding community.

Job Placement and Completion Rates. The completion rate is the percentage of students that start an educational program and complete it. It’s crucial that the welding school you select has a high completion rate. A lower rate could indicate that the students who enrolled in the program were unhappy with the instruction, the teachers, or the facilities, and dropped out. The job placement rate is also a good indicator of the quality of training. A higher job placement rate will not only confirm that the program has an excellent reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of Indian Rocks Beach FL contacts to assist students obtain apprenticeships or employment upon graduation.

Modern Equipment and Facilities. After you have limited your selection of welding programs to two or three options, you should consider going to the campuses to evaluate their facilities. Make sure that both the facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are modern. In particular, the training equipment should be similar to what you will be working with on the job. If you are unsure what to look for, and are currently in an apprenticeship program, consult with the master welder you are working under for guidance. Otherwise, ask a local Indian Rocks Beach FL welding professional if they can give you a few suggestions.

School Location. Even though we previously briefly discussed the importance of location, there are a couple of additional issues that we should deal with. You should keep in mind that unless you can move, the welding program you choose must be within driving distance of your Indian Rocks Beach FL home. If you do opt to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides moving costs there could be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is especially true for welder certificate programs offered by community colleges. Additionally, if the school provides an apprenticeship or job placement program, often their placements are within the school’s regional community. So the location of the school needs to be in an area or state where you subsequently will want to work.

Smaller Classes. Individualized training is essential for a hands-on trade such as welding. It’s possible to get lost in larger classes and not receive much one-on-one instruction. Find out what the typical class size is for the welding schools you are looking at. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of classes so that you can witness how much individual attention the students are receiving. While there, talk with some of the students and get their feedback. Similarly, chat with a few of the teachers and ask what their welding experience has been and what credentials and certifications they have earned.

Flexible Class Schedules. Some people learn a new profession while still working at their present job. Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are looking at are flexible enough to satisfy your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evenings or on weekends near Indian Rocks Beach FL, verify that the schools you are considering provide those alternatives. If you can only attend part-time, confirm that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, check to see what the protocol is to make up classes if you you miss any due to work, illness or family circumstances.

Online Welding Certificate and Degree Programs

Indian Rocks Beach FL master welder attending online welding classesWelding is very much a manual kind of vocation, and therefore not very compatible with online training. Even so, there are some online welding programs offered by various community colleges and technical schools in the greater Indian Rocks Beach FL area that can be credited toward a certificate or degree program. These courses primarily cover such topics as reading blueprints, safety,, and metallurgy. They can help provide a beginner a basis to start their education and training. Nevertheless, the most critical point is that you can’t learn how to weld or handle welding materials unless you actually do it. Clearly that can’t be done online. These skills have to be learned in an on-campus setting or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is more appropriate for experienced welders that would like to advance their knowledge or perhaps attain a more advanced degree. So if you should find an online welding certificate or degree program, be extremely cautious and verify that the majority of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of environment.
