Welding Certificate and Degree Training Courses

welding car in Weatherly PAThere are a number of options to obtain training as a welder in a trade or vocational school. You can receive a a certificate, a diploma or an Associate Degree. Bachelor Degrees are available in Welding Engineering or Welding Technology, but are more advanced degrees than most journeyman welders will need. Some programs are also made available in conjunction with an apprenticeship program. Following are brief explanations of the most prevalent welding programs offered in the Weatherly PA area.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are usually offered by trade and technical schools and require about one year to complete. They are more hands-on training in nature, created primarily to teach welding skills. They can furnish a good foundation for a new journeyman or apprentice welder, or additional skills for working welders.
  • Associate Degree Programs will take two years to finish and are usually offered by community colleges. An Associate Degree in Welding Technology furnishes a more extensive education than the diploma or certificate while still providing the foundation that prepares students to enter the workforce.

A number of municipalities and states do have licensing requirements for welders, so don’t forget to check for your location of future employment. If needed, the welder school you pick should prep you for any licensing exams that you will have to pass in addition to supplying the appropriate training to become a professional welder.

Welder Certification Options

welder working in Weatherly PA shopThere are a number of organizations that offer welding certifications, which assess the knowledge and skill level of those applying. Numerous Weatherly PA employers not only require a certificate or degree from an accredited welding program, but also certification from a respected organization such as the American Welding Society (AWS). A wide range of certifications are offered based upon the type of work that the welder does. A few of the things that certification can acknowledge are the welder’s ability to

  • Work in compliance with specific codes
  • Work with certain metal thicknesses
  • Work with certain types of welds
  • Operate in compliance with contract specifications

As previously mentioned, some cities, states or local municipalities have licensing requirements for welders. Of those requiring licensing, many additionally require certification for various kinds of work. Certification is also a means to demonstrate to employers that you are a highly skilled and qualified welder. So similarly as with licensing, check the requirements for your local area and verify that the welder vocational school you select preps you for certification if needed.

Subjects to Ask Welding Trade Schools

What to ask Weatherly PA welding schoolsOnce you have chosen the credential you want to obtain, a degree, certificate or diploma, you can start to assess schools. As you probably know, there are many welder trade and vocational schools in the Weatherly PA area. That’s why it’s necessary to decide in advance what qualifications your school of choice must have. We have previously discussed 2 important ones that most people consider first, which are location and tuition cost. As mentioned, although they are essential qualifications, they are not the only ones that should be looked at. After all, the school you pick is going to furnish the education that will be the foundation of your new profession as a welder. So following are more factors you may want to consider before picking a welding tech school.

Accreditation. It’s extremely important that the welder trade school you pick is accredited by either a national or a regional organization. There are 2 basic kinds of accreditation. The school may receive Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on an individual program the school offers, for example Welding Technology. So confirm that the program you select is accredited, not just the school alone. Also, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, such as the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). Besides helping make sure that you get a superior education, the accreditation can also assist in securing financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable in Weatherly PA for non-accredited schools. Finally, for those states or local governments that require licensing, they may require that the welder training program be accredited as well.

Job Placement and Apprenticeship Programs. Numerous welder degree or certificate programs are offered combined with an apprenticeship program. Other schools will help place you in an apprenticeship or a job after graduation. Ask if the schools you are considering help in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job placement program. The schools should have partnerships with local unions and various metal working businesses to which they can refer their students. More established schools may have a larger network of graduates that they can rely upon for placements. These programs can assist students in finding employment and establish associations within the Weatherly PA welding community.

Completion and Job Placement Rates. The completion rate is the percentage of students that start an instructional program and finish it. It’s important that the welding program you select has a high completion rate. A lower rate could indicate that the students who joined the program were dissatisfied with the training, the teachers, or the facilities, and dropped out. The job placement rate is also an indication of the caliber of training. A higher job placement rate will not only affirm that the program has an excellent reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of Weatherly PA contacts to help students obtain employment or apprenticeships after graduation.

Modern Equipment and Facilities. Once you have limited your choice of welder schools to two or three options, you should think out visiting the campuses to look over their facilities. Make sure that both the facilities and the equipment that you will be taught on are up-to-date. In particular, the training equipment should be similar to what you will be working with on the job. If you are unsure what to look for, and are currently in an apprenticeship program, ask the master welder you are working under for guidance. If not, ask a local Weatherly PA welding professional if they can give you a few pointers.

School Location. Even though we already briefly talked about the importance of location, there are a few additional issues that we should address. You should bear in mind that unless you can relocate, the welder school you choose needs to be within driving distance of your Weatherly PA home. If you do choose to enroll in an out-of-state school, apart from relocation costs there might be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is particularly true for welding diploma programs offered by community colleges. Also, if the school provides a job placement or apprenticeship program, most likely their placements are within the school’s local community. So the location of the school should be in an area or state where you ultimately will desire to work.

Small Classes. One-on-one training is important for a hands-on trade such as welding. It’s possible to be lost in bigger classes and not get much one-on-one training. Ask what the average class size is for the welder programs you are looking at. Inquire if you can attend some classes so that you can observe how much personal attention the students are receiving. While there, speak with several of the students and get their evaluations. Similarly, talk with a few of the teachers and ask what their welding experience has been and what certifications and credentials they hold.

Convenient Class Schedules. Many people learn a new profession while still working at their present job. Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are looking at are flexible enough to satisfy your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Weatherly PA, make certain that the schools you are assessing provide those alternatives. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you choose offers part-time enrollment. Also, check to see what the protocol is to make up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family circumstances.

Online Welding Certificate and Degree Programs

Weatherly PA master welder attending online welding classesWelding is truly a manual kind of vocation, and consequently not very compatible with training online. However, there are a small number of online welding programs offered by various community colleges and technical schools in the greater Weatherly PA area that can be credited toward a degree or certificate program. These classes primarily deal with such subjects as reading blueprints, safety,, and metallurgy. They can help give a beginner a basis to start their training and education. However, the most significant point is that you can’t learn how to weld or work with welding materials unless you actually do it. Obviously that can’t be performed online. These skills have to be learned in an on-campus environment or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is more appropriate for seasoned welders that would like to advance their knowledge or possibly earn a more advanced degree. So if you should find an online welding certificate or degree program, be very cautious and confirm that the larger part of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of environment.
