Welding Degree and Certificate Programs

welding car in Napoleon OHThere are a number of options available to obtain training as a welder in a technical or trade school. You can earn a diploma, a certificate or an Associate Degree. Bachelor Degrees are available in Welding Technology or Welding Engineering, but are more advanced courses than most journeyman welders will need. Some programs are also made available combined with an apprenticeship program. Below are short descriptions of the most prevalent welding programs offered in the Napoleon OH area.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are usually offered by trade and technical schools and require about one year to complete. They are more hands-on training in nature, designed largely to teach welding skills. They can provide a good foundation for a new journeyman or apprentice welder, or additional skills for working welders.
  • Associate Degree Programs will take two years to complete and are most often offered by community colleges. An Associate Degree in Welding Technology furnishes a more extensive education than the diploma or certificate while still providing the foundation that readies students to enter the workforce.

A number of states and municipalities do have licensing requirements for welders, therefore don’t forget to check for your location of potential employment. As required, the welder school you choose should ready you for any licensing examinations that you will have to pass in addition to supplying the appropriate training to become a professional welder.

Welder Certification Options

welder working in Napoleon OH shopThere are various institutions that provide welding certifications, which evaluate the skill level and knowledge of those applying. Many Napoleon OH employers not only require a degree or certificate from an accredited welding program, but also certification from a highly regarded agency like the American Welding Society (AWS). A wide range of certifications are offered based upon the kind of work that the welder performs. Some of the skills that certification can attest to are the welder’s ability to

  • Work in compliance with specific codes
  • Work with specific metal thicknesses
  • Work with certain types of welds
  • Perform in compliance with contract specifications

As previously mentioned, some states, cities or local municipalities have licensing requirements for welders. Of those calling for licensing, some also require certification for different types of work. Certification is also a means to prove to employers that you are an extremely skilled and knowledgeable welder. So similarly as with licensing, check the requirements for your local area and make sure that the welder tech school you choose preps you for certification as needed.

What to Ask Welder Vocational Schools

What to ask Napoleon OH welding schoolsAfter you have chosen the credential you would like to attain, a degree, certificate or diploma, you can start to compare schools. As you probably know, there are a large number of welder trade and vocational schools in the Napoleon OH area. That’s why it’s essential to decide in advance what qualifications your selected school must have. We have previously covered 2 significant ones that most people look at first, which are location and tuition cost. As mentioned, although they are very important qualifiers, they are not the only ones that must be looked at. After all, the program you decide on is going to furnish the training that will be the foundation of your new profession as a welder. So below are more factors you might need to evaluate before choosing a welding technical school.

Accreditation. It’s essential that the welder tech school you pick is accredited by either a regional or a national agency. There are two standard types of accreditation. The school may attain Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on a specific program the school offers, for example Welding Technology. So make certain that the program you pick is accredited, not just the school alone. Additionally, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, like the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). In addition to helping make sure that you receive a superior education, the accreditation can also help in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases not available in Napoleon OH for schools that are not accredited. Finally, for those states or municipalities that require licensing, they may require that the welder training program be accredited as well.

Apprenticeship and Job Assistance Programs. A large number of welder degree or diploma programs are provided in conjunction with an apprenticeship program. Some other schools will assist in placing you in an apprenticeship or a job after graduation. Ask if the schools you are considering help in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job assistance program. The schools must have relationships with local unions and various metal working businesses to which they can refer their students. Older schools may have a more substantial network of graduates that they can utilize for referrals. These programs can assist students in finding employment and develop associations within the Napoleon OH welding community.

Job Placement and Completion Rates. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students that enroll in an educational program and finish it. It’s essential that the welder program you choose has a high completion rate. A reduced rate may mean that the students who joined the program were unhappy with the training, the instructors, or the facilities, and dropped out. The job placement rate is also a good indicator of the quality of training. A higher job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of Napoleon OH employer relationships to assist students obtain apprenticeships or employment after graduation.

Modern Equipment and Facilities. Once you have limited your choice of welder programs to two or three possibilities, you should think out visiting the campuses to inspect their facilities. Verify that both the facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date. Specifically, the training equipment should be comparable to what you will be working with on the job. If you are not sure what to look for, and are currently in an apprenticeship program, ask the master welder you are working under for guidance. Otherwise, ask a local Napoleon OH welding contractor if they can give you a few tips.

School Location. Although we previously briefly talked about the relevance of location, there are a couple of additional issues that we should deal with. You should remember that unless you have the ability to move, the welding school you choose must be within driving distance of your Napoleon OH home. If you do choose to attend an out-of-state school, besides moving expenses there may be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is particularly true for welding certificate programs offered by community colleges. Additionally, if the school provides a job placement or apprenticeship program, more than likely their placements are within the school’s regional community. So the location of the school should be in a region or state where you ultimately will wish to work.

Small Classes. Personalized instruction is important for a hands-on trade such as welding. It’s possible to get lost in bigger classes and not obtain much personalized training. Find out what the usual class size is for the welder schools you are reviewing. Ask if you can attend some classes so that you can see just how much personal attention the students are receiving. While there, talk with some of the students and get their feedback. Similarly, talk to some of the trainers and find out what their welding experience has been and what credentials and certifications they have earned.

Convenient Class Scheduling. Many people learn a new trade while still employed at their present job. Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are looking at are convenient enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evenings or on weekends near Napoleon OH, confirm that the schools you are assessing offer those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you pick offers part-time enrollment. Also, find out what the protocol is to make up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family emergencies.

Online Welder Courses

Napoleon OH master welder attending online welding classesWelding is truly a manual kind of profession, and consequently not extremely suitable for training online. However, there are a small number of online welding classes offered by various community colleges and vocational schools in the greater Napoleon OH area that may count toward a degree or certificate program. These classes mainly deal with such topics as reading blueprints, safety,, and metallurgy. They can help provide a novice a basis to initiate their training and education. However, the most significant point is that you can’t learn how to weld or use welding materials until you actually do it. Obviously that can’t be done online. These skills need to be learned in an on-campus setting or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is more appropriate for seasoned welders that would like to advance their knowledge or perhaps obtain a more advanced degree. So if you should come across an online welding degree or certificate program, be very careful and make certain that the majority of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of environment.

    Napoleon, Ohio

Napoleon is a city in and the county seat of Henry County, Ohio, United States,[6] along the Maumee River 44 miles southwest of Toledo. As of the 2010 census, the city had a total population of 8,749.

The area around the town was once known as "the Great Black Swamp". This area was opened to European settlement following the Battle of Fallen Timbers in 1794, which took place about 26 miles to the east.[7] The City of Napoleon was founded in 1832 and named for French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte. The Miami and Erie Canal was finished in 1843, bringing German immigrants to the area.[7][8] By the 1880s, the town had more than 3,000 residents; the population growth due in part to the town's location on the Miami and Erie Canal and two separate railroad lines. At the time, most employment existed through businesses which made products for farmers in the surrounding countryside.[9]

Four buildings in Napoleon are listed on the National Register of Historic Places: the county courthouse, the sheriff's house and jail, First Presbyterian Church, and St. Augustine's Catholic Church.[10]
