welder working in Muscatine IA shopThere are multiple institutions that provide welding certifications, which test the skill level and knowledge of those applying. • Operate in compliance with specific codes
  • Work with certain metal thicknesses
  • Work with specific kinds of welds
  • Work in compliance with contract specifications

As earlier stated, some cities, states or local municipalities have licensing mandates for welders. Of those calling for licensing, many additionally require certification for different kinds of work. Certification is also a way to prove to employers that you are an extremely skilled and knowledgeable welder. So just as with licensing, look into the requirements for your local area and verify that the welding tech school you choose preps you for certification if needed.

Topics to Ask Welder Technical Schools

What to ask Muscatine IA welding schoolsAfter you have chosen the credential you would like to attain, a degree, certificate or diploma, you can start to compare schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are many welding trade and vocational schools in the Muscatine IA area. That’s why it’s essential to establish up front what qualifications your selected school must have. We have already covered 2 significant ones that most people consider first, which are location and tuition cost. As stated, although they are very important qualifiers, they are not the only ones that need to be looked at. After all, the program you select is going to provide the training that will be the foundation of your new vocation as a welder. So below are some additional factors you may need to evaluate before selecting a welding trade school.

Accreditation. It’s very important that the welder trade school you choose is accredited by either a regional or a national organization. There are 2 basic types of accreditation. The school may earn Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on a specific program the school offers, such as Welding Technology. So verify that the program you choose is accredited, not just the school itself. Also, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, for example the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). In addition to helping ensure that you get a quality education, the accreditation might also help in getting financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases not offered in Muscatine IA for schools that are not accredited. Also, for those states or local governments that require licensing, they may require that the welding training program be accredited as well.

Apprenticeship and Job Assistance Programs. Many welding degree or certificate programs are provided in conjunction with an apprenticeship program. Other schools will help place you in an apprenticeship or a job upon graduation. Ask if the schools you are considering help in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job placement program. The schools should have relationships with local unions and other metal working businesses to which they can refer their students. Older schools may have a more substantial network of graduates that they can utilize for placements. These programs can help students find employment and establish relationships within the Muscatine IA welding community.

Completion and Job Placement Rates. The completion rate is the percentage of students that start an educational program and finish it. It’s important that the welding school you select has a higher completion rate. A lower rate may signify that the students who enrolled in the program were unhappy with the instruction, the instructors, or the facilities, and dropped out. The job placement rate is also an indication of the quality of training. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of Muscatine IA contacts to assist students obtain employment or apprenticeships after graduation.

Up-to-date Equipment and Facilities. After you have decreased your selection of welding programs to 2 or 3 options, you should think out going to the campuses to look over their facilities. Verify that both the facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date. Specifically, the training equipment should be similar to what you will be working with on the job. If you are unsure what to look for, and are already in an apprenticeship program, ask the master welder you are working under for guidance. If not, ask a local Muscatine IA welding contractor if they can give you some tips.

School Location. Even though we previously briefly covered the importance of location, there are a few additional issues that we should cover. You should bear in mind that unless you have the ability to relocate, the welding school you choose needs to be within driving distance of your Muscatine IA home. If you do decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation expenses there might be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is particularly the case for welding certificate programs offered by community colleges. Additionally, if the school offers an apprenticeship or job placement program, more than likely their placements are within the school’s local community. So the location of the school needs to be in a region or state where you subsequently will want to work.

Smaller Classes. Personalized training is essential for a hands-on trade such as welding. It’s easy to get lost in larger classes and not get much individualized instruction. Ask what the average class size is for the welding schools you are reviewing. Inquire if you can sit in on some classes so that you can see just how much personal attention the students are getting. While there, speak with several of the students and get their opinions. Also, chat with a couple of the instructors and find out what their welding experience has been and what certifications and credentials they have earned.

Convenient Class Scheduling. Lots of folks learn a new profession while still employed at their current job. Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are looking at are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Muscatine IA, make certain that the schools you are considering offer those choices. If you can only attend part-time, verify that the school you decide on offers part-time enrollment. Also, check to see what the policy is to make up classes if you you miss any because of work, sickness or family responsibilities.

Online Welding Classes

Muscatine IA master welder attending online welding classesWelding is very much a hands-on type of vocation, and therefore not extremely suitable for online training. Having said that, there are a few online welding classes offered by various community colleges and technical schools in the greater Muscatine IA area that can count toward a certificate or degree program. These courses mainly deal with such topics as reading blueprints, safety,, and metallurgy. They can help give a beginner a basis to begin their education and training. Nevertheless, the most significant point is that you can’t learn how to weld or handle welding materials unless you actually do it. Naturally that can’t be accomplished online. These skills have to be learned in an on-campus setting or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is more appropriate for seasoned welders that want to advance their knowledge or perhaps earn a more advanced degree. So if you should come across an online welding degree or certificate program, be very cautious and verify that the bulk of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of environment.
