Some programs are also made available combined with an apprenticeship program. Following are short summaries of the most prevalent welding programs available in the Holtville CA area.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are normally made available by technical and trade schools and require about a year to finish. They are more hands-on training in nature, fashioned primarily to teach welding skills. They can provide a good foundation for a new journeyman or apprentice welder, or additional skills for experienced welders.
  • Associate Degree Programs will take two years to finish and are most often offered by community colleges. An Associate Degree in Welding Technology provides a more well-rounded education than the diploma or certificate while still providing the foundation that prepares students to enter the workforce.

Many states and municipalities do have licensing requirements for welders, therefore make sure to find out for your location of potential employment. If needed, the welder school you pick should prep you for any licensing examinations that you will need to take in addition to supplying the suitable training to become a qualified welder.

Welding Certification Alternatives

welder working in Holtville CA shopThere are several organizations that offer welder certifications, which test the knowledge and skill level of those applying. Numerous Holtville CA employers not only expect a certificate or degree from an accredited welding school, but also certification from a renowned agency such as the American Welding Society (AWS). A variety of certifications are available based on the type of work that the welder does. A few of the skills that certification can acknowledge are the welder’s ability to

  • Operate in compliance with specific codes
  • Work with specific metal thicknesses
  • Work with specific types of welds
  • Operate in compliance with contract specifications

As earlier stated, various states, cities or local municipalities have licensing mandates for welders. Of those requiring licensing, some additionally require certification for different kinds of work. Certification is also a way to demonstrate to employers that you are an extremely skilled and experienced welder. So similarly as with licensing, check the requirements for your local area and confirm that the welder vocational school you select prepares you for certification as needed.

What to Ask Welding Trade Schools

What to ask Holtville CA welding schoolsOnce you have decided on the credential you would like to earn, a degree, certificate or diploma, you can start to evaluate schools. As you can imagine, there are numerous welding trade and technical schools in the Holtville CA area. That’s why it’s essential to decide up front what qualifications your school of choice must have. We have already discussed 2 significant ones that most people consider first, which are location and tuition cost. As stated, although they are very important qualifications, they are not the only ones that should be considered. After all, the program you select is going to furnish the instruction that will be the foundation of your new career as a welder. So following are some additional factors you might need to consider before choosing a welding vocational school.

Accreditation. It’s essential that the welder tech school you decide on is accredited by either a regional or a national agency. There are two basic types of accreditation. The school may attain Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on a specific program the school offers, for example Welding Technology. So make sure that the program you pick is accredited, not just the school itself. Additionally, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, like the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). Besides helping make sure that you get a superior education, the accreditation can also help in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable in Holtville CA for schools that are not accredited. Also, for those states or municipalities that require licensing, they may require that the welding training program be accredited as well.

Apprenticeship and Job Assistance Programs. Many welder degree or certificate programs are offered combined with an apprenticeship program. Other schools will help place you in an apprenticeship or a job after graduation. Ask if the schools you are considering help in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job assistance program. The schools must have partnerships with local unions and various metal working businesses to which they can refer their students. Older schools may have a more substantial network of graduates that they can rely upon for placements. These programs can assist students in finding employment and develop relationships within the Holtville CA welding community.

Job Placement and Completion Rates. The completion rate is the percentage of students that start an educational program and complete it. It’s important that the welding program you choose has a high completion rate. A lower rate may indicate that the students who joined the program were unhappy with the training, the teachers, or the facilities, and dropped out. The job placement rate is also a good indicator of the quality of training. A higher job placement rate will not only verify that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of Holtville CA contacts to help students obtain employment or apprenticeships upon graduation.

Up-to-date Equipment and Facilities. After you have limited your choice of welder schools to 2 or 3 options, you should consider going to the campuses to look over their facilities. Verify that both the equipment and the facilities that you will be trained on are up-to-date. In particular, the training equipment should be comparable to what you will be using on the job. If you are uncertain what to look for, and are currently in an apprenticeship program, consult with the master welder you are working under for guidance. Otherwise, ask a local Holtville CA welding contractor if they can give you some tips.

School Location. Although we previously briefly talked about the relevance of location, there are a few additional points that we need to address. You should remember that unless you can relocate, the welder school you choose must be within commuting distance of your Holtville CA home. If you do choose to attend an out-of-state school, besides moving costs there might be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is especially true for welding degree programs offered by community colleges. Furthermore, if the school provides an apprenticeship or job placement program, often their placements are within the school’s local community. So the location of the school needs to be in an area or state where you ultimately will desire to work.

Smaller Classes. Personalized training is essential for a manual trade such as welding. It’s possible to get lost in larger classes and not obtain much personalized instruction. Ask what the usual class size is for the welding programs you are considering. Inquire if you can sit in on a couple of classes so that you can observe how much individual attention the students are receiving. While there, talk with some of the students and get their evaluations. Also, chat with a couple of the trainers and ask what their welding experience has been and what credentials and certifications they have earned.

Flexible Class Scheduling. Some people learn a new trade while still employed at their current job. Check to see that the class schedules for the programs you are looking at are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evenings or on weekends near Holtville CA, verify that the schools you are looking at provide those choices. If you can only enroll part-time, verify that the school you decide on offers part-time enrollment. Also, check to see what the policy is to make up classes if you you miss any due to illness, work or family circumstances.

Online Welder Courses

Holtville CA master welder attending online welding classesWelding is truly a manual type of trade, and for that reason not extremely compatible with online training. Having said that, there are a few online welding classes offered by various community colleges and vocational schools in the greater Holtville CA area that can be credited toward a degree or certificate program. These classes primarily cover such subjects as reading blueprints, safety,, and metallurgy. They can help give a beginner a basis to begin their education and training. However, the most critical point is that you can’t learn how to weld or work with welding materials until you actually do it. Clearly that can’t be accomplished online. These skills need to be learned in an on-campus setting or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is more appropriate for seasoned welders that desire to advance their expertise or perhaps obtain a more advanced degree. So if you should find an online welding certificate or degree program, be extremely careful and make certain that the larger part of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of environment.

    Holtville, California

Holtville (formerly, Holton)[6] is a city in Imperial County, California. Holtville is located 10.5 miles (17 km) east of El Centro.[7] The population was 5,939 at the 2010 census, up from 5,612 in 2000.

The city was founded by Swiss-German settlers in the 1880s, who often entered from Mexico. The construction of railroads in the 1890s, the All-American Canal in the late 1940s, U.S. Route 80 in the 1920s later converted to Interstate 8 in the 1970s and the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) economic boom in the 1990s brought more people to Holtville and the Imperial Valley.

The city of Holtville, which was originally called Holton, was founded in 1903 by W.F. Holt, and incorporated on June 20, 1908.[7] The name was changed to Holtville due to a request by the U. S. Postal Service because the name Holton sounded too much like Colton (in San Bernardino County), the regional headquarters of the Southern Pacific Railroad at the time. The name honors W.F. Holt, founder of the community.[7][8]
