Welder Certificate and Degree Training

welding car in Cannelton INThere are multiple options to receive training as a welder in a technical or trade school. You can earn a a certificate, a diploma or an Associate Degree. Bachelor Degrees are offered in Welding Technology or Welding Engineering, but are more advanced degrees than most journeyman welders will need. Some programs are also made available combined with an apprenticeship program. Following are short explanations of the most prevalent welding programs available in the Cannelton IN area.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are generally made available by trade and technical schools and require about a year to finish. They are more hands-on training in scope, created largely to teach welding skills. They can furnish a good foundation for a new journeyman or apprentice welder, or specialized skills for working welders.
  • Associate Degree Programs will take 2 years to finish and are usually offered by community colleges. An Associate Degree in Welding Technology provides a more extensive education than the certificate or diploma while still furnishing the foundation that prepares students to enter the workforce.

Some states and municipalities do have licensing requirements for welders, so make sure to find out for your location of future employment. As required, the welder school you pick should prep you for any licensing examinations that you will have to take in addition to providing the appropriate training to become a professional welder.

Welder Certification Options

welder working in Cannelton IN shopThere are several organizations that provide welding certifications, which evaluate the skill level and knowledge of those applying. Numerous Cannelton IN employers not only require a certificate or degree from an accredited welding program, but also certification from a respected organization such as the American Welding Society (AWS). A wide range of certifications are available based on the type of work that the welder performs. Just some of the things that certification can acknowledge are the welder’s ability to

  • Work in compliance with specific codes
  • Work with specified metal thicknesses
  • Work with various types of welds
  • Work in compliance with contract specifications

As earlier mentioned, many cities, states or local municipalities have licensing mandates for welders. Of those mandating licensing, some also require certification for various kinds of work. Certification is also a way to demonstrate to employers that you are an extremely skilled and experienced welder. So similarly as with licensing, look into the requirements for your local area and confirm that the welding tech school you decide on preps you for certification if needed.

Subjects to Ask Welder Tech Schools

What to ask Cannelton IN welding schoolsOnce you have decided on the credential you would like to attain, a degree, certificate or diploma, you can start to assess schools. As you probably know, there are many welder trade and vocational schools in the Cannelton IN area. That’s why it’s important to determine in advance what qualifications your school of choice must have. We have already discussed 2 important ones that many people consider first, which are location and tuition cost. As mentioned, although they are essential qualifiers, they are not the only ones that need to be looked at. After all, the program you pick is going to provide the training that will be the foundation of your new vocation as a welder. So below are some additional factors you might need to consider before picking a welding tech school.

Accreditation. It’s extremely important that the welding vocational school you decide on is accredited by either a regional or a national agency. There are 2 basic kinds of accreditation. The school may receive Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on a single program the school has, for example Welding Technology. So make sure that the program you pick is accredited, not just the school itself. Also, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, for example the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). Besides helping make sure that you obtain a superior education, the accreditation may also help in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases not available in Cannelton IN for schools that are not accredited. Also, for those states or municipalities that mandate licensing, they may require that the welding training program be accredited as well.

Job Assistance and Apprenticeship Programs. Many welding degree or certificate programs are provided in conjunction with an apprenticeship program. Some other schools will assist in placing you in a job or an apprenticeship upon graduation. Find out if the schools you are considering assist in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job placement program. The schools should have relationships with local unions and various metal working businesses to which they can refer their students. More established schools may have a larger network of graduates that they can rely upon for referrals. These programs can assist students in finding employment and develop associations within the Cannelton IN welding community.

Job Placement and Completion Rates. The completion rate is the percentage of students that begin an academic program and finish it. It’s important that the welding school you pick has a high completion rate. A reduced rate may indicate that the students who were in the program were dissatisfied with the training, the instructors, or the facilities, and dropped out. The job placement rate is also a good indicator of the caliber of training. A high job placement rate will not only verify that the school has a good reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of Cannelton IN employer relationships to help students secure employment or apprenticeships after graduation.

Up-to-date Equipment and Facilities. After you have limited your choice of welding programs to two or three possibilities, you should think out going to the campuses to inspect their facilities. Verify that both the facilities and the equipment that you will be taught on are modern. Specifically, the training equipment should be comparable to what you will be using in the field. If you are uncertain what to look for, and are currently in an apprenticeship program, ask the master welder you are working under for guidance. Otherwise, ask a local Cannelton IN welding professional if they can give you some pointers.

School Location. Although we previously briefly covered the importance of location, there are a few additional issues that we should cover. You should bear in mind that unless you can move, the welder school you pick needs to be within commuting distance of your Cannelton IN home. If you do opt to enroll in an out-of-state school, apart from moving costs there may be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is particularly true for welding certificate programs offered by community colleges. Also, if the school provides an apprenticeship or job placement program, most likely their placements are within the school’s regional community. So the location of the school needs to be in an area or state where you ultimately will want to work.

Small Classes. One-on-one training is important for a hands-on trade such as welding. It’s easy to be overlooked in larger classes and not obtain much one-on-one training. Ask what the usual class size is for the welder schools you are considering. Inquire if you can sit in on a couple of classes so that you can witness just how much individual attention the students are receiving. While there, speak with several of the students and get their feedback. Similarly, speak with a few of the instructors and find out what their welding experience has been and what credentials and certifications they have earned.

Flexible Class Scheduling. Lots of folks learn a new profession while still employed at their present job. Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are considering are flexible enough to satisfy your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evenings or on weekends near Cannelton IN, make sure that the schools you are looking at offer those choices. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify that the school you pick offers part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the protocol is to make up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family circumstances.

Online Welder Certificate and Degree Programs

Cannelton IN master welder attending online welding classesWelding is very much a manual kind of vocation, and for that reason not extremely suitable for training online. However, there are a small number of online welding courses offered by various community colleges and technical schools in the greater Cannelton IN area that can be credited toward a certificate or degree program. These courses mainly cover such subjects as safety, reading blueprints, and metallurgy. They can help provide a novice a basis to begin their training and education. Nevertheless, the most significant point is that you can’t learn how to weld or use welding materials unless you actually do it. Clearly that can’t be done online. These skills must be learned in an on-campus environment or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is more appropriate for seasoned welders that would like to advance their knowledge or possibly attain a more advanced degree. So if you should find an online welding certificate or degree program, be extremely cautious and make sure that the greater part of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of environment.
