Welder Certificate and Degree Training

welding car in Ramah NMThere are several options to get training as a welder in a technical or trade school. You can earn a diploma, a certificate or an Associate Degree. Bachelor Degrees are available in Welding Engineering or Welding Technology, but are more advanced courses than most journeyman welders will need. Some programs are also offered along with an apprenticeship program. Below are brief descriptions of the most typical welding programs offered in the Ramah NM area.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are generally made available by technical and trade schools and take about 1 year to complete. They are more hands-on training in scope, designed primarily to develop welding skills. They can provide a good foundation for a new journeyman or apprentice welder, or specialized skills for experienced welders.
  • Associate Degree Programs will take 2 years to complete and are usually offered by community colleges. An Associate Degree in Welding Technology offers a more well-rounded education than the certificate or diploma while still providing the foundation that readies students to enter the workforce.

Some states and municipalities do have licensing requirements for welders, therefore be sure to find out for your location of potential employment. As needed, the welding school you select should prep you for any licensing examinations that you will have to take in addition to furnishing the suitable training to become a professional welder.

Welder Certification Alternatives

welder working in Ramah NM shopThere are several institutions that offer welder certifications, which test the knowledge and skill level of those applying. Numerous Ramah NM employers not only demand a certificate or degree from an accredited welding program, but also certification from a renowned organization like the American Welding Society (AWS). A wide range of certifications are offered based upon the type of work that the welder does. A few of the skills that certification can acknowledge are the welder’s ability to

  • Work in compliance with specific codes
  • Work with specified metal thicknesses
  • Work with various types of welds
  • Perform based on contract specifications

As earlier mentioned, many cities, states or local municipalities have licensing requirements for welders. Of those requiring licensing, many also require certification for different types of work. Certification is also a way to prove to employers that you are an extremely skilled and knowledgeable welder. So just as with licensing, check the requirements for your location and make certain that the welder vocational school you choose readies you for certification if needed.

Questions to Ask Welding Trade Schools

What to ask Ramah NM welding schoolsWhen you have chosen the credential you would like to earn, a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to evaluate schools. As you can imagine, there are numerous welder trade and technical schools in the Ramah NM area. That’s why it’s important to establish in advance what qualifications your selected school must have. We have previously covered a couple of important ones that most people look at first, which are location and the cost of tuition. As stated, although they are essential qualifiers, they are not the only ones that should be looked at. After all, the program you choose is going to furnish the training that will be the foundation of your new vocation as a welder. So below are more factors you may want to evaluate before picking a welding technical school.

Accreditation. It’s essential that the welding technical school you pick is accredited by either a regional or a national agency. There are 2 standard types of accreditation. The school may earn Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on a specific program the school has, for instance Welding Technology. So confirm that the program you select is accredited, not just the school alone. Additionally, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, for example the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). In addition to helping ensure that you get a quality education, the accreditation can also assist in getting financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases not available in Ramah NM for schools that are not accredited. Also, for those states or municipalities that require licensing, they may require that the welding training program be accredited also.

Apprenticeship and Job Assistance Programs. Numerous welder degree or diploma programs are provided in conjunction with an apprenticeship program. Other schools will help place you in a job or an apprenticeship after graduation. Find out if the schools you are looking at help in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job placement program. These schools should have partnerships with local unions and other metal working businesses to which they can refer their students. Older schools may have a more substantial network of graduates that they can utilize for referrals. These programs can assist students in finding employment and develop relationships within the Ramah NM welding community.

Job Placement and Completion Rates. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students that enroll in an educational program and complete it. It’s crucial that the welder school you select has a high completion rate. A low rate could indicate that the students who enrolled in the program were unhappy with the instruction, the teachers, or the facilities, and quit. The job placement rate is also a good indicator of the quality of training. A higher job placement rate will not only confirm that the program has an excellent reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of Ramah NM employer relationships to help students obtain apprenticeships or employment after graduation.

Up-to-date Facilities and Equipment. After you have limited your choice of welding schools to two or three options, you should consider going to the campuses to evaluate their facilities. Verify that both the equipment and the facilities that you will be instructed on are modern. Specifically, the training equipment should be similar to what you will be using on the job. If you are unsure what to look for, and are currently in an apprenticeship program, consult with the master welder you are working under for guidance. If not, ask a local Ramah NM welding professional if they can give you some suggestions.

School Location. Although we already briefly discussed the relevance of location, there are a couple of additional points that we need to address. You should keep in mind that unless you are able to move, the welder school you choose needs to be within driving distance of your Ramah NM home. If you do opt to enroll in an out-of-state school, apart from relocation expenses there might be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is particularly the case for welding degree programs offered by community colleges. Furthermore, if the school offers an apprenticeship or job placement program, most likely their placements are within the school’s regional community. So the location of the school should be in a region or state where you subsequently will wish to work.

Smaller Classes. Personalized training is important for a manual trade such as welding. It’s easy to be lost in bigger classes and not obtain much personalized instruction. Ask what the usual class size is for the welder programs you are reviewing. Ask if you can attend a few classes so that you can observe how much individual attention the students are receiving. While there, talk with a few of the students and get their evaluations. Also, chat with some of the teachers and find out what their welding experience has been and what certifications and credentials they hold.

Flexible Class Schedules. Lots of folks learn a new trade while still employed at their current job. Check to see that the class schedules for the programs you are considering are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evenings or on weekends near Ramah NM, make certain that the schools you are reviewing offer those alternatives. If you can only enroll part-time, confirm that the school you choose offers part-time enrollment. Also, find out what the protocol is to make up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family responsibilities.

Online Welding Classes

Ramah NM master welder attending online welding classesWelding is truly a manual type of vocation, and for that reason not extremely suitable for training online. However, there are a few online welding courses offered by specific community colleges and technical schools in the greater Ramah NM area that may be credited toward a degree or certificate program. These courses primarily cover such topics as safety, reading blueprints, and metallurgy. They can help provide a novice a basis to initiate their education and training. However, the most important point is that you can’t learn how to weld or use welding materials unless you actually do it. Clearly that can’t be performed online. These skills need to be learned in an on-campus environment or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is more appropriate for experienced welders that would like to advance their knowledge or possibly obtain a more advanced degree. So if you should find an online welding degree or certificate program, be very cautious and make certain that the majority of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of environment.

    Ramah, New Mexico

Ramah (Navajo: Tłʼohchiní - ″place of wild onions″) is a census-designated place (CDP) in McKinley County, New Mexico, United States. The population was 407 at the 2000 census, and 370 at the 2010 United States Census.

Established in 1876, Ramah was one of fifty locations in the New Mexico Territory settled, under the direction of Brigham Young, by Mormon pioneers and is one of only three that remain today. Ramah was originally settled for the purpose of missionary work to be carried out within the Zuni and Navajo communities. Many of the original stone houses are still standing and are a testament to the hard work and skill of Ramah's early founders. One such building has been restored and preserved as a museum to display the heritage of the valley's past. Ramah Lake was built by these same pioneers in order to farm the surrounding area, which receives moderate rainfall on a yearly basis. The lake relies on snow fall and spring run off to sustain its water levels. This trait is shared by many areas in the state of New Mexico. In recent years, due to drought the lake had dried up, the town irrigation committee used this low water level to make improvements including dredging a large amount of silt build up and reinforcing the dam allowing water to be used more efficiently. Modernization in irrigation has allowed water to be used more effectively. Lying at 6926 feet above sea level Ramah is considered by some as a high desert yet the Ramah area defies most peoples view of a desert all together. With its tall pines sandstone cliffs and timber covered mountains Ramah seems more like a mountainous retreat. Much of the lower landscape in the surrounding area is covered with lava flows from the chain of volcanos to the south. Intermixed in the scenery are ruins of an ancient people who dotted the land. Now only piles of rocks most ruins are unrecognizable to the untrained eye. The Ramah Lake hiking trails and the neighboring El Morro, El Calderon and El Malpais National Monuments offer hikers beautiful views of the colorful sandstone cliffs and sprawling vistas that make this area unique. As well as a glimpse into the past life of the ancient people who build their stone structures and lived on the land. Ramah lies between the Zuni Indian Reservation, the Ramah Navajo Indian Reservation, and the Cibola National Forest.[3]Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary, El Morro National Monument, and El Malpais National Monument are all located near the Ramah area.

As of the census[4] of 2000, there were 407 people, 121 households, and 98 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 106.9 people per square mile (41.2/km²). There were 175 housing units at an average density of 46.0 per square mile (17.7/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 64.86% White, 25.80% Native American, 0.98% Pacific Islander, 0.74% from other races, and 7.62% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.63% of the population.
