  • Work in compliance with specific codes
  • Work with certain metal thicknesses
  • Work with various kinds of welds

As formerly mentioned, many cities, states or local municipalities have licensing mandates for welders. Of those calling for licensing, many also require certification for various types of work. Certification is also a means to prove to employers that you are a highly skilled and qualified welder. So just as with licensing, look into the requirements for your location and make sure that the welding tech school you choose prepares you for certification if needed.

Points to Ask Welding Technical Programs

What to ask Millen GA welding schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the credential you would like to attain, a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to compare schools. As you probably know, there are numerous welder vocational and trade schools in the Millen GA area. That’s why it’s essential to decide up front what qualifications your school of choice must have. We have previously covered 2 important ones that many people consider first, which are location and the cost of tuition. As mentioned, although they are essential qualifications, they are not the only ones that should be looked at. After all, the program you pick is going to furnish the training that will be the foundation of your new profession as a welder. So following are more factors you might want to evaluate before choosing a welding vocational school.

Accreditation. It’s essential that the welder technical school you pick is accredited by either a national or a regional agency. There are two standard types of accreditation. The school may attain Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on a specific program the school has, such as Welding Technology. So confirm that the program you select is accredited, not just the school alone. Also, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, such as the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). Besides helping ensure that you obtain a quality education, the accreditation may also help in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable in Millen GA for non-accredited schools. Also, for those states or municipalities that require licensing, they may require that the welder training program be accredited as well.

Job Assistance and Apprenticeship Programs. A large number of welder degree or diploma programs are offered combined with an apprenticeship program. Various other schools will help place you in an apprenticeship or a job after graduation. Find out if the schools you are reviewing assist in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job placement program. The schools should have relationships with local unions and various metal working businesses to which they can place their students. Older schools may have a more substantial network of graduates that they can rely upon for placements. These programs can help students find employment and develop associations within the Millen GA welding community.

Job Placement and Completion Rates. The completion rate is the percentage of students that enroll in an instructional program and complete it. It’s important that the welder school you pick has a high completion rate. A lower rate may indicate that the students who joined the program were dissatisfied with the training, the instructors, or the facilities, and quit. The job placement rate is also a good indicator of the caliber of training. A high job placement rate will not only verify that the program has a good reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of Millen GA contacts to assist students secure apprenticeships or employment after graduation.

Modern Facilities and Equipment. After you have narrowed down your selection of welder programs to 2 or 3 options, you should think out visiting the campuses to evaluate their facilities. Verify that both the facilities and the equipment that you will be taught on are up-to-date. Specifically, the training equipment should be similar to what you will be using on the job. If you are not sure what to look for, and are already in an apprenticeship program, ask the master welder you are working under for guidance. Otherwise, ask a local Millen GA welding professional if they can give you some pointers.

School Location. Although we already briefly talked about the importance of location, there are a few additional issues that we need to cover. You should keep in mind that unless you are able to move, the welding school you choose must be within driving distance of your Millen GA home. If you do opt to enroll in an out-of-state school, apart from relocation costs there may be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is particularly true for welding certificate programs offered by community colleges. Furthermore, if the school provides an apprenticeship or job placement program, most likely their placements are within the school’s regional community. So the location of the school should be in an area or state where you subsequently will desire to work.

Smaller Classes. Personalized training is essential for a manual trade such as welding. It’s easy to be overlooked in bigger classes and not receive much personalized instruction. Find out what the typical class size is for the welding schools you are looking at. Inquire if you can attend a couple of classes so that you can experience just how much individual attention the students are getting. While there, talk with a few of the students and get their opinions. Similarly, chat with some of the instructors and find out what their welding experience has been and what credentials and certifications they hold.

Convenient Class Scheduling. Some people learn a new profession while still working at their present job. Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are looking at are convenient enough to meet your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evenings or on weekends near Millen GA, verify that the schools you are considering provide those alternatives. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the protocol is to make up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family emergencies.

Online Welding Certificate and Degree Programs

Millen GA master welder attending online welding classesWelding is truly a hands-on type of profession, and for that reason not extremely suitable for training online. However, there are some online welding classes offered by various community colleges and technical schools in the greater Millen GA area that may be credited toward a degree or certificate program. These courses mainly cover such topics as safety, reading blueprints, and metallurgy. They can help provide a novice a basis to begin their education and training. However, the most important point is that you can’t learn how to weld or handle welding materials until you actually do it. Obviously that can’t be performed online. These skills have to be learned in an on-campus environment or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is better suited for experienced welders that want to advance their expertise or possibly attain a more advanced degree. So if you should discover an online welding certificate or degree program, be extremely careful and verify that the majority of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of environment.
