  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are normally made available by trade and technical schools and take about a year to complete. They are more hands-on training in nature, created primarily to develop welding skills. Welder Certification Choices

welder working in Indianola IA shopThere are several organizations that provide welder certifications, which evaluate the skill level and knowledge of those applying. Many Indianola IA employers not only demand a certificate or degree from an accredited welding school, but also certification from a respected agency like the American Welding Society (AWS). Different certifications are available dependent on the kind of work that the welder does. Just some of the things that certification can acknowledge are the welder’s ability to

  • Operate in compliance with specific codes
  • Work with certain metal thicknesses
  • Work with specific types of welds
  • Perform in compliance with contract specifications

As earlier mentioned, various cities, states or local municipalities have licensing requirements for welders. Of those mandating licensing, a number additionally require certification for various kinds of work. Certification is also a means to demonstrate to employers that you are a highly skilled and experienced welder. So just as with licensing, look into the requirements for your location and verify that the welding technical school you decide on readies you for certification as needed.

Questions to Ask Welding Trade Schools

What to ask Indianola IA welding schoolsAs soon as you have chosen the credential you want to obtain, a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to assess schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are many welder trade and vocational schools in the Indianola IA area. That’s why it’s important to decide up front what qualifications your selected school must have. We have already discussed two important ones that many people look at first, which are location and the cost of tuition. As stated, although they are very important qualifiers, they are not the only ones that need to be considered. After all, the program you pick is going to furnish the instruction that will be the foundation of your new profession as a welder. So below are more factors you may need to evaluate before choosing a welding technical school.

Accreditation. It’s very important that the welding technical school you decide on is accredited by either a national or a regional agency. There are two basic types of accreditation. The school may earn Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on a single program the school has, for instance Welding Technology. So make sure that the program you choose is accredited, not just the school itself. Also, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, such as the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). Besides helping ensure that you get a quality education, the accreditation might also assist in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are frequently not offered in Indianola IA for schools that are not accredited. Finally, for those states or local governments that require licensing, they may require that the welding training program be accredited as well.

Apprenticeship and Job Assistance Programs. Numerous welder diploma or degree programs are offered combined with an apprenticeship program. Other schools will help place you in a job or an apprenticeship upon graduation. Find out if the schools you are looking at help in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job assistance program. The schools should have associations with local unions and various metal working businesses to which they can place their students. More established schools may have a more substantial network of graduates that they can utilize for placements. These programs can assist students in finding employment and develop relationships within the Indianola IA welding community.

Job Placement and Completion Rates. The completion rate is the percentage of students that enroll in an educational program and complete it. It’s important that the welder program you select has a higher completion rate. A reduced rate might signify that the students who enrolled in the program were dissatisfied with the instruction, the teachers, or the facilities, and quit. The job placement rate is also an indication of the caliber of training. A high job placement rate will not only verify that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of Indianola IA contacts to assist students secure employment or apprenticeships after graduation.

Modern Equipment and Facilities. After you have limited your selection of welder programs to two or three options, you should think out going to the campuses to evaluate their facilities. Make sure that both the equipment and the facilities that you will be instructed on are modern. In particular, the training equipment should be similar to what you will be using in the field. If you are not sure what to look for, and are currently in an apprenticeship program, ask the master welder you are working under for guidance. If not, ask a local Indianola IA welding professional if they can give you some pointers.

School Location. Although we already briefly covered the significance of location, there are a few additional issues that we should address. You should remember that unless you can relocate, the welding program you select needs to be within driving distance of your Indianola IA home. If you do opt to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides moving expenses there could be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is particularly true for welding certificate programs offered by community colleges. Additionally, if the school offers a job placement or apprenticeship program, most likely their placements are within the school’s local community. So the location of the school should be in a region or state where you ultimately will wish to work.

Small Classes. One-on-one instruction is essential for a manual trade such as welding. It’s possible to get lost in bigger classes and not receive much personalized instruction. Ask what the usual class size is for the welder schools you are looking at. Inquire if you can sit in on a few classes so that you can witness how much personal attention the students are getting. While there, speak with a few of the students and get their feedback. Also, chat with a few of the trainers and ask what their welding experience has been and what certifications and credentials they hold.

Flexible Class Scheduling. Lots of folks learn a new profession while still employed at their current job. Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are convenient enough to satisfy your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evenings or on weekends near Indianola IA, make certain that the schools you are assessing offer those alternatives. If you can only enroll part-time, confirm that the school you decide on offers part-time enrollment. Also, find out what the protocol is to make up classes if you you miss any because of illness, work or family circumstances.

Online Welding Classes

Indianola IA master welder attending online welding classesWelding is very much a manual type of trade, and consequently not extremely suitable for online training. Even so, there are some online welding classes offered by certain community colleges and vocational schools in the greater Indianola IA area that can be credited toward a certificate or degree program. These classes primarily cover such subjects as safety, reading blueprints, and metallurgy. They can help give a beginner a foundation to start their training and education. Nevertheless, the most significant point is that you can’t learn how to weld or use welding materials until you actually do it. Clearly that can’t be done online. These skills have to be learned in an on-campus setting or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is more appropriate for seasoned welders that desire to advance their expertise or perhaps attain a more advanced degree. So if you should find an online welding degree or certificate program, be extremely cautious and verify that the majority of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of setting.
