Welder Certificate and Degree Training Courses

welding car in Shelburne Falls MAThere are several alternatives available to obtain training as a welder in a trade or technical school. You can receive a diploma, a certificate or an Associate Degree. Bachelor Degrees are offered in Welding Technology or Welding Engineering, but are more advanced degrees than most journeyman welders will need. Some programs are also offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship program. Below are short descriptions of the most prevalent welding programs available in the Shelburne Falls MA area.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are usually offered by technical and trade schools and require about a year to complete. They are more hands-on training in scope, fashioned largely to teach welding skills. They can furnish a good foundation for a new journeyman or apprentice welder, or additional skills for working welders.
  • Associate Degree Programs will take two years to complete and are most often offered by community colleges. An Associate Degree in Welding Technology provides a more well-rounded education than the diploma or certificate while still furnishing the foundation that readies students to enter the workforce.

Many municipalities and states do have licensing prerequisites for welders, therefore don’t forget to check for your location of future employment. As needed, the welder school you pick should prepare you for any licensing examinations that you will need to pass in addition to furnishing the suitable training to become a professional welder.

Welding Certification Options

welder working in Shelburne Falls MA shopThere are multiple institutions that provide welder certifications, which test the skill level and knowledge of those applying. Numerous Shelburne Falls MA employers not only require a degree or certificate from an accredited welding program, but also certification from a respected agency like the American Welding Society (AWS). A wide range of certifications are available dependent on the type of work that the welder does. Some of the things that certification can acknowledge are the welder’s ability to

  • Work in compliance with specific codes
  • Work with specified metal thicknesses
  • Work with various types of welds
  • Work in compliance with contract specifications

As earlier stated, many states, cities or local municipalities have licensing requirements for welders. Of those calling for licensing, many additionally require certification for different kinds of work. Certification is also a means to prove to employers that you are an extremely skilled and knowledgeable welder. So just as with licensing, check the requirements for your location and verify that the welder tech school you decide on prepares you for certification as needed.

Subjects to Ask Welder Trade Schools

What to ask Shelburne Falls MA welding schoolsOnce you have chosen the credential you would like to earn, a degree, certificate or diploma, you can begin to assess schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are many welding trade and vocational schools in the Shelburne Falls MA area. That’s why it’s essential to decide up front what qualifications your selected school must have. We have already discussed a couple of significant ones that many people look at first, which are location and the cost of tuition. As mentioned, although they are very important qualifiers, they are not the only ones that need to be looked at. After all, the program you pick is going to furnish the education that will be the foundation of your new profession as a welder. So following are some additional factors you may want to evaluate before selecting a welder tech school.

Accreditation. It’s very important that the welder vocational school you decide on is accredited by either a regional or a national agency. There are 2 standard kinds of accreditation. The school may receive Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on a single program the school has, such as Welding Technology. So confirm that the program you pick is accredited, not just the school alone. Also, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, such as the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). Besides helping ensure that you get a superior education, the accreditation can also assist in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are often not available in Shelburne Falls MA for schools that are not accredited. Finally, for those states or local governments that require licensing, they may require that the welder training program be accredited also.

Job Placement and Apprenticeship Programs. Numerous welder certificate or degree programs are offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship program. Other schools will help place you in a job or an apprenticeship after graduation. Ask if the schools you are looking at assist in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job assistance program. The schools must have associations with local unions and other metal working businesses to which they can place their students. Older schools may have a larger network of graduates that they can utilize for placements. These programs can help students find employment and develop associations within the Shelburne Falls MA welding community.

Completion and Job Placement Rates. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students that start an educational program and complete it. It’s important that the welder school you select has a higher completion rate. A low rate may mean that the students who enrolled in the program were unhappy with the training, the teachers, or the facilities, and quit. The job placement rate is also an indication of the caliber of training. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the program has a good reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of Shelburne Falls MA employer relationships to help students secure employment or apprenticeships upon graduation.

Modern Equipment and Facilities. After you have limited your choice of welding programs to 2 or 3 possibilities, you should think out visiting the campuses to look over their facilities. Make sure that both the facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are modern. Specifically, the training equipment should be similar to what you will be using on the job. If you are unsure what to look for, and are currently in an apprenticeship program, consult with the master welder you are working under for guidance. If not, ask a local Shelburne Falls MA welding professional if they can give you some suggestions.

School Location. Although we already briefly covered the relevance of location, there are a few additional issues that we should address. You should keep in mind that unless you can relocate, the welding program you pick must be within driving distance of your Shelburne Falls MA home. If you do opt to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there may be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is particularly true for welding certificate programs offered by community colleges. Also, if the school offers an apprenticeship or job placement program, most likely their placements are within the school’s regional community. So the location of the school should be in a region or state where you ultimately will desire to work.

Smaller Classes. Personalized training is essential for a hands-on trade such as welding. It’s easy to be overlooked in larger classes and not get much personalized training. Find out what the typical class size is for the welder programs you are looking at. Ask if you can attend a couple of classes so that you can see just how much personal attention the students are receiving. While there, talk with several of the students and get their feedback. Also, chat with some of the teachers and ask what their welding experience has been and what certifications and credentials they have earned.

Convenient Class Schedules. Many people learn a new trade while still working at their present job. Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are looking at are convenient enough to satisfy your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Shelburne Falls MA, verify that the schools you are considering provide those options. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify that the school you pick offers part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the protocol is to make up classes should you miss any because of illness, work or family responsibilities.

Online Welding Training

Shelburne Falls MA master welder attending online welding classesWelding is truly a hands-on kind of trade, and therefore not extremely suitable for online training. However, there are a few online welding programs offered by certain community colleges and vocational schools in the greater Shelburne Falls MA area that can be credited toward a degree or certificate program. These courses mainly cover such subjects as reading blueprints, safety,, and metallurgy. They can help give a novice a basis to start their education and training. However, the most significant point is that you can’t learn how to weld or use welding materials until you actually do it. Clearly that can’t be performed online. These skills must be learned in an on-campus setting or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is more appropriate for seasoned welders that desire to advance their expertise or possibly attain a more advanced degree. So if you should find an online welding certificate or degree program, be extremely careful and make certain that the majority of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of setting.
