Some programs are also made available along with an apprenticeship program. Below are brief explanations of the most common welding programs offered in the Hatchechubbee AL area.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are usually made available by technical and trade schools and require about 1 year to finish. They are more hands-on training in scope, designed mainly to develop welding skills. They can provide a good foundation for a new journeyman or apprentice welder, or supplemental skills for experienced welders.
  • Associate Degree Programs will take two years to finish and are usually offered by community colleges. An Associate Degree in Welding Technology provides a more well-rounded education than the diploma or certificate while still furnishing the foundation that readies students to enter the workforce.

Some municipalities and states do have licensing requirements for welders, so be sure to check for your location of future employment. Welder Certification Options

welder working in Hatchechubbee AL shopThere are several organizations that provide welding certifications, which evaluate the skill level and knowledge of those applying. A large number of Hatchechubbee AL employers not only demand a degree or certificate from an accredited welding school, but also certification from a respected organization like the American Welding Society (AWS). A variety of certifications are offered based on the kind of work that the welder performs. A few of the things that certification can acknowledge are the welder’s ability to

  • Work in compliance with specific codes
  • Work with specific metal thicknesses
  • Work with specific kinds of welds
  • Work in compliance with contract specifications

As earlier stated, some cities, states or local municipalities have licensing mandates for welders. Of those mandating licensing, some additionally require certification for various kinds of work. Certification is also a means to demonstrate to employers that you are a highly skilled and qualified welder. So just as with licensing, check the requirements for your location and confirm that the welder trade school you choose preps you for certification if needed.

Subjects to Ask Welder Tech Schools

What to ask Hatchechubbee AL welding schoolsOnce you have chosen the credential you want to attain, a degree, certificate or diploma, you can start to compare schools. As you can imagine, there are a large number of welding vocational and trade schools in the Hatchechubbee AL area. That’s why it’s necessary to decide in advance what qualifications your selected school must have. We have previously discussed 2 significant ones that many people look at first, which are location and the cost of tuition. As mentioned, although they are essential qualifications, they are not the only ones that must be considered. After all, the school you decide on is going to provide the training that will be the foundation of your new vocation as a welder. So below are more factors you might need to evaluate before selecting a welder vocational school.

Accreditation. It’s very important that the welding vocational school you choose is accredited by either a national or a regional organization. There are two standard kinds of accreditation. The school may receive Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on an individual program the school has, for example Welding Technology. So make sure that the program you choose is accredited, not just the school itself. Additionally, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, such as the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). Besides helping make sure that you obtain a quality education, the accreditation might also help in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are often unavailable in Hatchechubbee AL for schools that are not accredited. Also, for those states or local governments that require licensing, they may require that the welding training program be accredited also.

Job Assistance and Apprenticeship Programs. Many welder certificate or degree programs are offered combined with an apprenticeship program. Some other schools will help place you in a job or an apprenticeship upon graduation. Find out if the schools you are looking at help in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job assistance program. The schools should have partnerships with local unions and various metal working businesses to which they can place their students. More established schools may have a larger network of graduates that they can utilize for placements. These programs can assist students in finding employment and develop associations within the Hatchechubbee AL welding community.

Completion and Job Placement Rates. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students that start an instructional program and complete it. It’s important that the welder program you pick has a higher completion rate. A lower rate could mean that the students who enrolled in the program were unhappy with the training, the teachers, or the facilities, and quit. The job placement rate is also a good indicator of the caliber of training. A higher job placement rate will not only confirm that the program has a good reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of Hatchechubbee AL employer relationships to help students obtain employment or apprenticeships after graduation.

Modern Facilities and Equipment. Once you have decreased your selection of welding schools to 2 or 3 options, you should think out visiting the campuses to evaluate their facilities. Verify that both the equipment and the facilities that you will be taught on are up-to-date. In particular, the training equipment should be comparable to what you will be working with in the field. If you are unsure what to look for, and are already in an apprenticeship program, consult with the master welder you are working under for guidance. Otherwise, ask a local Hatchechubbee AL welding professional if they can give you some suggestions.

School Location. Even though we previously briefly talked about the relevance of location, there are a few additional issues that we need to cover. You should remember that unless you can move, the welding program you choose needs to be within commuting distance of your Hatchechubbee AL home. If you do decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation expenses there may be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is especially the case for welder degree programs offered by community colleges. Additionally, if the school provides a job placement or apprenticeship program, often their placements are within the school’s local community. So the location of the school should be in a region or state where you ultimately will wish to work.

Small Classes. Individualized instruction is essential for a hands-on trade such as welding. It’s easy to be overlooked in larger classes and not get much individualized instruction. Ask what the typical class size is for the welding schools you are considering. Ask if you can attend a couple of classes so that you can see how much individual attention the students are getting. While there, speak with some of the students and get their opinions. Similarly, talk with a couple of the instructors and ask what their welding experience has been and what certifications and credentials they have earned.

Flexible Class Schedules. Some people learn a new profession while still working at their current job. Check to see that the class schedules for the schools you are considering are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Hatchechubbee AL, confirm that the schools you are assessing provide those alternatives. If you can only enroll part-time, confirm that the school you decide on offers part-time enrollment. Also, check to see what the policy is to make up classes if you you miss any due to work, sickness or family responsibilities.

Online Welding Schools

Hatchechubbee AL master welder attending online welding classesWelding is truly a hands-on type of trade, and therefore not extremely suitable for online training. Even so, there are some online welding courses offered by certain community colleges and technical schools in the greater Hatchechubbee AL area that may be credited toward a degree or certificate program. These classes mainly deal with such subjects as reading blueprints, safety,, and metallurgy. They can help give a novice a basis to initiate their training and education. However, the most critical point is that you can’t learn how to weld or work with welding materials until you actually do it. Clearly that can’t be performed online. These skills need to be learned in an on-campus environment or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is better suited for experienced welders that desire to advance their knowledge or possibly obtain a more advanced degree. So if you should find an online welding degree or certificate program, be very cautious and make certain that the majority of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of environment.
