But since there are so many schools to pick from, how do you know which ones to consider? And more importantly, once you have narrowed down your alternatives, how do you pick the right one? Most prospective students begin by looking at the schools that are nearest to their residences. Once they have found those that are within commuting distance, they are drawn toward the cheapest one. Yes, location and the cost of tuition are crucial issues when reviewing welder technical schools, but they are not the only ones. Other concerns include such things as reputation, accreditation and job placement rates. Welding Degree and Certificate Training

welding car in Firestone COThere are multiple options available to get training as a welder in a technical or trade school. You can obtain a a certificate, a diploma or an Associate Degree. Bachelor Degrees are available in Welding Engineering or Welding Technology, but are more advanced degrees than most journeyman welders will need. Some programs are also offered along with an apprenticeship program. Following are brief summaries of the most typical welding programs available in the Firestone CO area.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are normally made available by trade and technical schools and require about 1 year to finish. They are more hands-on training in nature, fashioned largely to develop welding skills. They can furnish a good foundation for a new journeyman or apprentice welder, or supplemental skills for working welders.
  • Associate Degree Programs will take 2 years to complete and are usually offered by community colleges. An Associate Degree in Welding Technology furnishes a more extensive education than the diploma or certificate while still providing the foundation that prepares students to enter the workforce.

A number of municipalities and states do have licensing requirements for welders, so make sure to check for your location of future employment. If needed, the welder school you pick should ready you for any licensing examinations that you will have to take in addition to furnishing the suitable training to become a professional welder.

Welding Certification Options

welder working in Firestone CO shopThere are multiple organizations that provide welding certifications, which assess the knowledge and skill level of those applying. Many Firestone CO employers not only expect a degree or certificate from an accredited welding program, but also certification from a renowned organization like the American Welding Society (AWS). Different certifications are offered dependent on the type of work that the welder performs. Some of the skills that certification can attest to are the welder’s ability to

  • Work in compliance with specific codes
  • Work with specific metal thicknesses
  • Work with specific kinds of welds
  • Operate in compliance with contract specifications

As already stated, some cities, states or local municipalities have licensing requirements for welders. Of those calling for licensing, many also require certification for different types of work. Certification is also a way to prove to employers that you are an extremely skilled and experienced welder. So similarly as with licensing, check the requirements for your local area and make sure that the welder technical school you choose prepares you for certification as needed.

Points to Ask Welder Tech Programs

What to ask Firestone CO welding schoolsAs soon as you have chosen the credential you would like to obtain, a diploma, certificate or degree, you can begin to compare schools. As you probably know, there are numerous welding vocational and trade schools in the Firestone CO area. That’s why it’s important to determine up front what qualifications your school of choice must have. We have previously discussed a couple of significant ones that many people consider first, which are location and the cost of tuition. As stated, although they are essential qualifications, they are not the only ones that need to be considered. After all, the program you choose is going to furnish the education that will be the foundation of your new career as a welder. So following are some additional factors you may need to consider before picking a welding trade school.

Accreditation. It’s essential that the welding technical school you select is accredited by either a regional or a national agency. There are 2 basic types of accreditation. The school may earn Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on a single program the school has, for example Welding Technology. So verify that the program you choose is accredited, not just the school alone. Additionally, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, for example the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). Besides helping make sure that you obtain a superior education, the accreditation can also assist in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are often unavailable in Firestone CO for non-accredited schools. Also, for those states or municipalities that mandate licensing, they may require that the welder training program be accredited as well.

Apprenticeship and Job Placement Programs. Numerous welder degree or diploma programs are provided in conjunction with an apprenticeship program. Some other schools will help place you in a job or an apprenticeship after graduation. Ask if the schools you are looking at help in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job placement program. These schools should have associations with local unions and various metal working businesses to which they can refer their students. Older schools may have a more substantial network of graduates that they can utilize for referrals. These programs can help students find employment and establish associations within the Firestone CO welding community.

Job Placement and Completion Rates. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students that enroll in an educational program and complete it. It’s important that the welding program you pick has a high completion rate. A lower rate could signify that the students who joined the program were unhappy with the training, the instructors, or the facilities, and dropped out. The job placement rate is also a good indicator of the caliber of training. A higher job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of Firestone CO employer relationships to help students obtain employment or apprenticeships upon graduation.

Modern Facilities and Equipment. Once you have decreased your selection of welder schools to 2 or 3 options, you should consider going to the campuses to inspect their facilities. Confirm that both the facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date. Specifically, the training equipment should be similar to what you will be working with in the field. If you are unsure what to look for, and are already in an apprenticeship program, ask the master welder you are working under for guidance. If not, ask a local Firestone CO welding professional if they can give you some suggestions.

School Location. Although we already briefly covered the relevance of location, there are a few additional issues that we need to deal with. You should remember that unless you have the ability to relocate, the welding program you select must be within driving distance of your Firestone CO home. If you do choose to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation expenses there may be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is particularly the case for welding degree programs offered by community colleges. Furthermore, if the school provides a job placement or apprenticeship program, most likely their placements are within the school’s local community. So the location of the school should be in a region or state where you subsequently will want to work.

Small Classes. Personalized instruction is important for a manual trade such as welding. It’s easy to be lost in larger classes and not get much one-on-one instruction. Find out what the usual class size is for the welding programs you are considering. Inquire if you can attend some classes so that you can witness how much personal attention the students are getting. While there, speak with several of the students and get their opinions. Similarly, talk to a couple of the instructors and find out what their welding experience has been and what certifications and credentials they hold.

Convenient Class Schedules. Many people learn a new profession while still employed at their current job. Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are looking at are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Firestone CO, verify that the schools you are reviewing provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, check to see what the policy is to make up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family circumstances.

Online Welding Classes

Firestone CO master welder attending online welding classesWelding is truly a hands-on kind of trade, and consequently not extremely compatible with training online. However, there are a small number of online welding courses offered by specific community colleges and technical schools in the greater Firestone CO area that can be credited toward a certificate or degree program. These classes mainly cover such subjects as safety, reading blueprints, and metallurgy. They can help give a novice a foundation to start their education and training. Nevertheless, the most important point is that you can’t learn how to weld or handle welding materials unless you actually do it. Naturally that can’t be done online. These skills need to be learned in an on-campus environment or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is more appropriate for seasoned welders that want to advance their expertise or perhaps obtain a more advanced degree. So if you should discover an online welding degree or certificate program, be extremely cautious and verify that the larger part of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of setting.

You originally stopped by our website because you had an interest in Compare Part Time Welding Courses and wanted more information on the topic Guide to Accelerated Welding Courses. However, as we have addressed in this article, there are a number of factors that you will need to evaluate and compare among the schools you are looking at. It’s a prerequisite that any welder school that you are reviewing includes a good deal of hands-on instruction. Classes should be smaller in size and each student must have their own welding machine to train on. Classroom instruction needs to provide a real-world frame of reference, and the training program should be up-to-date and conform with industry standards. Programs vary in length and the kind of credential provided, so you will need to ascertain what length of program and certificate or degree will best satisfy your needs. Every program provides different options for certification also. Perhaps the best way to research your short list of schools is to visit each campus and speak with the students and instructors. Take the time to sit in on a few classes. Inspect the campus and facilities. Make certain that you are confident that the school you decide on is the ideal one for you. With the right training, hard work and dedication, the final outcome will be a new career as a professional welder in Firestone CO.
