  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are normally offered by technical and trade schools and require about one year to complete. • Operate in compliance with contract specifications

As already stated, many cities, states or local municipalities have licensing requirements for welders. Of those requiring licensing, a number also require certification for various kinds of work. Certification is also a means to demonstrate to employers that you are a highly skilled and experienced welder. So just as with licensing, look into the requirements for your location and make certain that the welder tech school you select preps you for certification as needed.

Topics to Ask Welding Vocational Schools

What to ask Boaz AL welding schoolsOnce you have decided on the credential you would like to attain, a degree, certificate or diploma, you can start to assess schools. As you probably know, there are a large number of welding trade and technical schools in the Boaz AL area. That’s why it’s important to determine up front what qualifications your selected school must have. We have previously covered 2 significant ones that many people look at first, which are location and the cost of tuition. As stated, although they are very important qualifications, they are not the only ones that should be looked at. After all, the program you pick is going to furnish the instruction that will be the foundation of your new profession as a welder. So below are more factors you may want to evaluate before selecting a welding technical school.

Accreditation. It’s extremely important that the welding vocational school you choose is accredited by either a national or a regional organization. There are 2 standard types of accreditation. The school may attain Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on an individual program the school has, for example Welding Technology. So verify that the program you select is accredited, not just the school alone. Also, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, like the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). Besides helping make sure that you get a superior education, the accreditation might also assist in getting financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases not offered in Boaz AL for schools that are not accredited. Also, for those states or municipalities that mandate licensing, they may require that the welding training program be accredited as well.

Job Assistance and Apprenticeship Programs. Numerous welding degree or diploma programs are offered combined with an apprenticeship program. Other schools will assist in placing you in an apprenticeship or a job upon graduation. Ask if the schools you are looking at assist in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job assistance program. The schools must have partnerships with local unions and other metal working businesses to which they can place their students. More established schools may have a larger network of graduates that they can rely upon for placements. These programs can help students find employment and establish associations within the Boaz AL welding community.

Completion and Job Placement Rates. The completion rate is the percentage of students that start an educational program and complete it. It’s important that the welding school you select has a higher completion rate. A low rate could indicate that the students who were in the program were dissatisfied with the instruction, the instructors, or the facilities, and quit. The job placement rate is also an indication of the quality of training. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of Boaz AL employer relationships to assist students obtain apprenticeships or employment upon graduation.

Up-to-date Equipment and Facilities. After you have narrowed down your choice of welding programs to 2 or 3 possibilities, you should think out visiting the campuses to look over their facilities. Make sure that both the facilities and the equipment that you will be taught on are modern. Specifically, the training equipment should be comparable to what you will be working with in the field. If you are not sure what to look for, and are already in an apprenticeship program, consult with the master welder you are working under for guidance. If not, ask a local Boaz AL welding professional if they can give you some pointers.

School Location. Even though we already briefly covered the significance of location, there are a couple of additional issues that we should address. You should remember that unless you can relocate, the welding school you choose must be within commuting distance of your Boaz AL home. If you do opt to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there might be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is especially the case for welding degree programs offered by community colleges. Furthermore, if the school provides an apprenticeship or job placement program, most likely their placements are within the school’s local community. So the location of the school needs to be in an area or state where you subsequently will desire to work.

Small Classes. One-on-one instruction is essential for a hands-on trade such as welding. It’s possible to be lost in bigger classes and not obtain much personalized instruction. Find out what the usual class size is for the welder schools you are considering. Ask if you can attend a couple of classes so that you can witness just how much personal attention the students are getting. While there, speak with some of the students and get their feedback. Similarly, talk to a few of the instructors and find out what their welding experience has been and what credentials and certifications they have earned.

Convenient Class Scheduling. Some people learn a new trade while still working at their present job. Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to satisfy your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Boaz AL, make sure that the schools you are considering offer those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you choose offers part-time enrollment. Also, find out what the protocol is to make up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family circumstances.

Online Welding Training

Boaz AL master welder attending online welding classesWelding is truly a hands-on type of vocation, and for that reason not very suitable for training online. Even so, there are some online welding programs offered by certain community colleges and technical schools in the greater Boaz AL area that can count toward a degree or certificate program. These classes mainly deal with such topics as reading blueprints, safety,, and metallurgy. They can help provide a novice a basis to start their training and education. Nevertheless, the most important point is that you can’t learn how to weld or work with welding materials unless you actually do it. Naturally that can’t be accomplished online. These skills must be learned in an on-campus environment or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is more appropriate for seasoned welders that want to advance their knowledge or perhaps earn a more advanced degree. So if you should find an online welding certificate or degree program, be extremely cautious and confirm that the larger part of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of setting.
