Questions to Ask Welding Trade Programs

What to ask West Swanzey NH welding schoolsWhen you have chosen the credential you would like to attain, a diploma, certificate or degree, you can begin to compare schools. As you can imagine, there are many welder vocational and trade schools in the West Swanzey NH area. That’s why it’s important to determine in advance what qualifications your chosen school must have. We have previously covered 2 important ones that most people consider first, which are location and tuition cost. As stated, although they are essential qualifiers, they are not the only ones that must be looked at. After all, the school you choose is going to provide the training that will be the foundation of your new career as a welder. So following are more factors you may want to evaluate before selecting a welder technical school.

Accreditation. It’s very important that the welder tech school you select is accredited by either a regional or a national agency. There are two basic types of accreditation. The school may attain Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on a single program the school has, such as Welding Technology. So make certain that the program you choose is accredited, not just the school alone. Also, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, like the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). In addition to helping make sure that you get a superior education, the accreditation might also assist in getting financial aid or student loans, which are often not available in West Swanzey NH for non-accredited schools. Also, for those states or municipalities that mandate licensing, they may require that the welder training program be accredited also.

Job Placement and Apprenticeship Programs. Numerous welder diploma or degree programs are offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship program. Some other schools will help place you in a job or an apprenticeship after graduation. Find out if the schools you are looking at assist in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job placement program. These schools should have relationships with local unions and various metal working businesses to which they can refer their students. More established schools may have a more substantial network of graduates that they can rely upon for placements. These programs can help students find employment and establish relationships within the West Swanzey NH welding community.

Job Placement and Completion Rates. The completion rate is the percentage of students that enroll in an educational program and complete it. It’s essential that the welder school you pick has a high completion rate. A lower rate might mean that the students who joined the program were unhappy with the instruction, the instructors, or the facilities, and quit. The job placement rate is also a good indicator of the quality of training. A higher job placement rate will not only verify that the school has a good reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of West Swanzey NH contacts to assist students secure apprenticeships or employment after graduation.

Modern Facilities and Equipment. Once you have narrowed down your selection of welder programs to two or three options, you should think out going to the campuses to evaluate their facilities. Confirm that both the facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are modern. In particular, the training equipment should be similar to what you will be working with on the job. If you are not sure what to look for, and are currently in an apprenticeship program, ask the master welder you are working under for guidance. Otherwise, ask a local West Swanzey NH welding professional if they can give you a few suggestions.

School Location. Although we previously briefly covered the significance of location, there are a couple of additional issues that we need to cover. You should remember that unless you have the ability to move, the welder school you pick needs to be within commuting distance of your West Swanzey NH home. If you do opt to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation expenses there could be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is particularly the case for welding diploma programs offered by community colleges. Furthermore, if the school provides a job placement or apprenticeship program, more than likely their placements are within the school’s regional community. So the location of the school should be in an area or state where you ultimately will desire to work.

Smaller Classes. One-on-one instruction is important for a manual trade such as welding. It’s easy to get lost in larger classes and not receive much one-on-one training. Ask what the usual class size is for the welder schools you are considering. Inquire if you can sit in on a few classes so that you can witness how much individual attention the students are getting. While there, talk with a few of the students and get their opinions. Similarly, talk to some of the teachers and ask what their welding experience has been and what certifications and credentials they have earned.

Flexible Class Scheduling. Many people learn a new profession while still working at their current job. Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are considering are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near West Swanzey NH, make sure that the schools you are reviewing provide those alternatives. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, confirm that the school you pick offers part-time enrollment. Also, check to see what the protocol is to make up classes should you miss any due to illness, work or family emergencies.

Online Welder Training

West Swanzey NH master welder attending online welding classesWelding is truly a hands-on type of trade, and consequently not extremely compatible with training online. Even so, there are a few online welding classes offered by specific community colleges and trade schools in the greater West Swanzey NH area that can count toward a degree or certificate program. These classes primarily cover such subjects as safety, reading blueprints, and metallurgy. They can help provide a beginner a foundation to start their education and training. However, the most critical point is that you can’t learn how to weld or use welding materials until you actually do it. Naturally that can’t be done online. These skills must be learned in an on-campus environment or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is more appropriate for experienced welders that want to advance their knowledge or possibly attain a more advanced degree. So if you should come across an online welding degree or certificate program, be extremely cautious and make sure that the bulk of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of setting.
