Welding Certificate and Degree Training Classes

welding car in Pilot Mountain NCThere are a number of alternatives available to get training as a welder in a trade or technical school. You can receive a diploma, a certificate or an Associate Degree. Bachelor Degrees are offered in Welding Technology or Welding Engineering, but are more advanced courses than most journeyman welders will need. Some programs are also made available along with an apprenticeship program. Below are brief explanations of the most typical welding programs available in the Pilot Mountain NC area.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are usually made available by trade and technical schools and require about 1 year to finish. They are more hands-on training in scope, created primarily to develop welding skills. They can provide a good foundation for a new journeyman or apprentice welder, or specialized skills for experienced welders.
  • Associate Degree Programs will take 2 years to complete and are usually offered by community colleges. An Associate Degree in Welding Technology furnishes a more well-rounded education than the certificate or diploma while still furnishing the foundation that readies students to enter the workforce.

A number of municipalities and states do have licensing prerequisites for welders, therefore make sure to find out for your location of potential employment. As required, the welder school you choose should ready you for any licensing exams that you will have to pass in addition to providing the suitable training to become a professional welder.

Welder Certification Options

welder working in Pilot Mountain NC shopThere are multiple organizations that offer welder certifications, which assess the skill level and knowledge of those applying. A large number of Pilot Mountain NC employers not only demand a degree or certificate from an accredited welding program, but also certification from a respected agency such as the American Welding Society (AWS). Different certifications are available based upon the type of work that the welder performs. Some of the things that certification can acknowledge are the welder’s ability to

  • Operate in compliance with specific codes
  • Work with specified metal thicknesses
  • Work with certain types of welds
  • Work according to contract specifications

As previously stated, various states, cities or local municipalities have licensing mandates for welders. Of those requiring licensing, many also require certification for various types of work. Certification is also a means to prove to employers that you are a highly skilled and qualified welder. So just as with licensing, look into the requirements for your location and confirm that the welding vocational school you decide on prepares you for certification as needed.

Subjects to Ask Welder Vocational Schools

What to ask Pilot Mountain NC welding schoolsOnce you have decided on the credential you would like to attain, a degree, certificate or diploma, you can start to evaluate schools. As you probably know, there are a large number of welder vocational and trade schools in the Pilot Mountain NC area. That’s why it’s important to determine up front what qualifications your chosen school must have. We have previously covered two significant ones that many people look at first, which are location and the cost of tuition. As mentioned, although they are very important qualifiers, they are not the only ones that should be considered. After all, the school you select is going to furnish the instruction that will be the foundation of your new vocation as a welder. So below are some additional factors you might want to evaluate before picking a welding technical school.

Accreditation. It’s essential that the welding vocational school you pick is accredited by either a national or a regional organization. There are 2 standard kinds of accreditation. The school may attain Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on a single program the school has, for example Welding Technology. So make sure that the program you pick is accredited, not just the school alone. Additionally, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, such as the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). In addition to helping make sure that you get an excellent education, the accreditation can also help in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases not offered in Pilot Mountain NC for non-accredited schools. Finally, for those states or local governments that mandate licensing, they may require that the welding training program be accredited as well.

Job Placement and Apprenticeship Programs. Many welder degree or certificate programs are offered combined with an apprenticeship program. Other schools will help place you in an apprenticeship or a job after graduation. Ask if the schools you are considering help in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job assistance program. These schools should have relationships with local unions and other metal working businesses to which they can refer their students. Older schools may have a larger network of graduates that they can utilize for placements. These programs can help students find employment and establish relationships within the Pilot Mountain NC welding community.

Job Placement and Completion Rates. The completion rate is the percentage of students that begin an educational program and finish it. It’s essential that the welder school you pick has a higher completion rate. A reduced rate may signify that the students who were in the program were dissatisfied with the training, the teachers, or the facilities, and quit. The job placement rate is also an indication of the quality of training. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of Pilot Mountain NC contacts to help students obtain employment or apprenticeships upon graduation.

Modern Equipment and Facilities. After you have narrowed down your choice of welding programs to two or three possibilities, you should think out going to the campuses to inspect their facilities. Verify that both the facilities and the equipment that you will be taught on are modern. Specifically, the training equipment should be comparable to what you will be working with on the job. If you are unsure what to look for, and are already in an apprenticeship program, ask the master welder you are working under for guidance. Otherwise, ask a local Pilot Mountain NC welding contractor if they can give you a few pointers.

School Location. Although we already briefly talked about the relevance of location, there are a few additional points that we should cover. You should bear in mind that unless you can relocate, the welding program you pick needs to be within driving distance of your Pilot Mountain NC home. If you do opt to attend an out-of-state school, besides relocation costs there might be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is especially the case for welding diploma programs offered by community colleges. Additionally, if the school offers an apprenticeship or job placement program, more than likely their placements are within the school’s regional community. So the location of the school needs to be in an area or state where you subsequently will wish to work.

Smaller Classes. Personalized instruction is essential for a hands-on trade such as welding. It’s possible to be overlooked in bigger classes and not receive much individualized instruction. Ask what the typical class size is for the welding programs you are looking at. Inquire if you can sit in on a few classes so that you can observe just how much personal attention the students are receiving. While there, speak with several of the students and get their feedback. Also, speak with a couple of the trainers and ask what their welding experience has been and what certifications and credentials they hold.

Flexible Class Scheduling. Many people learn a new profession while still working at their present job. Check to see that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to satisfy your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evenings or on weekends near Pilot Mountain NC, confirm that the schools you are considering provide those alternatives. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you choose offers part-time enrollment. Also, find out what the policy is to make up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family emergencies.

Online Welding Schools

Pilot Mountain NC master welder attending online welding classesWelding is very much a hands-on kind of trade, and consequently not very suitable for online training. Even so, there are a few online welding programs offered by certain community colleges and vocational schools in the greater Pilot Mountain NC area that can count toward a degree or certificate program. These courses primarily deal with such subjects as safety, reading blueprints, and metallurgy. They can help give a novice a foundation to initiate their training and education. However, the most significant point is that you can’t learn how to weld or use welding materials until you actually do it. Obviously that can’t be accomplished online. These skills have to be learned in an on-campus setting or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is better suited for experienced welders that would like to advance their expertise or possibly obtain a more advanced degree. So if you should find an online welding certificate or degree program, be very careful and verify that the larger part of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of environment.
