Welding Degree and Certificate Training Classes

welding car in Neptune NJThere are several options to obtain training as a welder in a trade or technical school. You can earn a diploma, a certificate or an Associate Degree. Bachelor Degrees are offered in Welding Engineering or Welding Technology, but are more advanced degrees than most journeyman welders will need. Some programs are also offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship program. Following are short summaries of the most prevalent welding programs available in the Neptune NJ area.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are generally offered by trade and technical schools and require about one year to finish. They are more hands-on training in nature, designed primarily to teach welding skills. They can provide a good foundation for a new journeyman or apprentice welder, or supplemental skills for experienced welders.
  • Associate Degree Programs will take 2 years to finish and are usually offered by community colleges. An Associate Degree in Welding Technology offers a more well-rounded education than the certificate or diploma while still furnishing the foundation that readies students to enter the workforce.

Some municipalities and states do have licensing requirements for welders, so make sure to find out for your location of future employment. As needed, the welder school you choose should prepare you for any licensing examinations that you will need to pass in addition to furnishing the suitable training to become a professional welder.

Welding Certification Alternatives

welder working in Neptune NJ shopThere are a number of organizations that provide welder certifications, which evaluate the knowledge and skill level of those applying. A large number of Neptune NJ employers not only require a degree or certificate from an accredited welding program, but also certification from a renowned organization like the American Welding Society (AWS). A wide range of certifications are offered based on the type of work that the welder does. Just some of the things that certification can attest to are the welder’s ability to

  • Work in compliance with specific codes
  • Work with specific metal thicknesses
  • Work with various types of welds
  • Operate according to contract specifications

As formerly stated, some states, cities or local municipalities have licensing mandates for welders. Of those calling for licensing, a number also require certification for different kinds of work. Certification is also a means to demonstrate to employers that you are an exceptionally skilled and qualified welder. So similarly as with licensing, check the requirements for your location and verify that the welding trade school you choose readies you for certification as needed.

Topics to Ask Welder Tech Schools

What to ask Neptune NJ welding schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the credential you would like to obtain, a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to evaluate schools. As you can imagine, there are a large number of welding vocational and trade schools in the Neptune NJ area. That’s why it’s important to establish up front what qualifications your selected school must have. We have previously discussed 2 important ones that many people consider first, which are location and tuition cost. As mentioned, although they are essential qualifiers, they are not the only ones that should be looked at. After all, the program you select is going to provide the training that will be the foundation of your new profession as a welder. So following are more factors you might need to evaluate before choosing a welding trade school.

Accreditation. It’s extremely important that the welding technical school you select is accredited by either a regional or a national agency. There are two basic types of accreditation. The school may receive Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on a single program the school offers, for example Welding Technology. So confirm that the program you select is accredited, not just the school alone. Additionally, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, for example the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). Besides helping make sure that you get a superior education, the accreditation can also help in getting financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases not offered in Neptune NJ for schools that are not accredited. Finally, for those states or municipalities that mandate licensing, they may require that the welding training program be accredited also.

Apprenticeship and Job Placement Programs. A large number of welder diploma or degree programs are provided combined with an apprenticeship program. Other schools will assist in placing you in a job or an apprenticeship upon graduation. Ask if the schools you are looking at help in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job placement program. These schools must have partnerships with local unions and various metal working businesses to which they can refer their students. More established schools may have a more substantial network of graduates that they can rely upon for placements. These programs can help students find employment and develop relationships within the Neptune NJ welding community.

Completion and Job Placement Rates. The completion rate is the percentage of students that begin an instructional program and complete it. It’s crucial that the welding school you select has a high completion rate. A lower rate may signify that the students who were in the program were dissatisfied with the instruction, the instructors, or the facilities, and quit. The job placement rate is also a good indicator of the quality of training. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the program has a good reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of Neptune NJ employer relationships to help students secure apprenticeships or employment upon graduation.

Modern Equipment and Facilities. Once you have decreased your selection of welding schools to 2 or 3 possibilities, you should think out going to the campuses to evaluate their facilities. Confirm that both the equipment and the facilities that you will be trained on are up-to-date. In particular, the training equipment should be comparable to what you will be using in the field. If you are not sure what to look for, and are already in an apprenticeship program, ask the master welder you are working under for guidance. Otherwise, ask a local Neptune NJ welding professional if they can give you a few tips.

School Location. Although we previously briefly discussed the importance of location, there are a few additional points that we need to deal with. You should remember that unless you are able to move, the welding school you pick must be within driving distance of your Neptune NJ home. If you do choose to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there may be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is especially the case for welder diploma programs offered by community colleges. Furthermore, if the school offers an apprenticeship or job placement program, more than likely their placements are within the school’s local community. So the location of the school needs to be in an area or state where you subsequently will wish to work.

Small Classes. Personalized training is essential for a manual trade such as welding. It’s possible to be overlooked in larger classes and not get much individualized instruction. Find out what the usual class size is for the welding programs you are reviewing. Inquire if you can sit in on some classes so that you can observe just how much personal attention the students are getting. While there, speak with a few of the students and get their evaluations. Similarly, speak with a couple of the teachers and ask what their welding experience has been and what credentials and certifications they have earned.

Convenient Class Scheduling. Many people learn a new profession while still working at their current job. Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are looking at are convenient enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Neptune NJ, confirm that the schools you are considering provide those alternatives. If you can only enroll part-time, verify that the school you choose offers part-time enrollment. Also, find out what the protocol is to make up classes if you you miss any because of work, illness or family emergencies.

Online Welding Training Programs

Neptune NJ master welder attending online welding classesWelding is truly a manual kind of profession, and therefore not extremely suitable for training online. Even so, there are some online welding courses offered by certain community colleges and technical schools in the greater Neptune NJ area that can be credited toward a degree or certificate program. These classes mainly cover such subjects as safety, reading blueprints, and metallurgy. They can help provide a beginner a foundation to initiate their training and education. However, the most significant point is that you can’t learn how to weld or work with welding materials until you actually do it. Naturally that can’t be performed online. These skills need to be learned in an on-campus environment or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is more appropriate for experienced welders that would like to advance their expertise or possibly obtain a more advanced degree. So if you should find an online welding degree or certificate program, be extremely careful and confirm that the bulk of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of setting.
