  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are generally made available by trade and technical schools and take about one year to complete. Welding Certification Options

welder working in Buzzards Bay MA shopThere are several organizations that offer welder certifications, which evaluate the skill level and knowledge of those applying. A large number of Buzzards Bay MA employers not only require a degree or certificate from an accredited welding school, but also certification from a highly regarded organization like the American Welding Society (AWS). A variety of certifications are offered based upon the type of work that the welder does. Just some of the skills that certification can attest to are the welder’s ability to

  • Work in compliance with specific codes
  • Work with specific metal thicknesses
  • Work with specific kinds of welds
  • Operate according to contract specifications

As already mentioned, various states, cities or local municipalities have licensing requirements for welders. Of those requiring licensing, some also require certification for different types of work. Certification is also a way to demonstrate to employers that you are a highly skilled and qualified welder. So just as with licensing, check the requirements for your local area and verify that the welding technical school you choose readies you for certification as needed.

Points to Ask Welder Vocational Schools

What to ask Buzzards Bay MA welding schoolsAs soon as you have chosen the credential you want to attain, a degree, certificate or diploma, you can begin to compare schools. As you probably know, there are many welding trade and technical schools in the Buzzards Bay MA area. That’s why it’s essential to decide up front what qualifications your selected school must have. We have previously covered a couple of significant ones that many people look at first, which are location and tuition cost. As mentioned, although they are very important qualifications, they are not the only ones that need to be considered. After all, the program you pick is going to furnish the training that will be the foundation of your new vocation as a welder. So below are some additional factors you might want to evaluate before selecting a welder tech school.

Accreditation. It’s very important that the welding trade school you pick is accredited by either a regional or a national organization. There are two standard types of accreditation. The school may earn Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on a single program the school has, for instance Welding Technology. So make sure that the program you choose is accredited, not just the school itself. Also, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, like the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). In addition to helping make sure that you receive an excellent education, the accreditation may also help in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are frequently unavailable in Buzzards Bay MA for non-accredited schools. Finally, for those states or municipalities that mandate licensing, they may require that the welding training program be accredited also.

Apprenticeship and Job Assistance Programs. Many welding certificate or degree programs are offered combined with an apprenticeship program. Other schools will assist in placing you in an apprenticeship or a job after graduation. Ask if the schools you are considering assist in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job placement program. These schools must have relationships with local unions and various metal working businesses to which they can refer their students. More established schools may have a larger network of graduates that they can utilize for referrals. These programs can assist students in finding employment and develop associations within the Buzzards Bay MA welding community.

Job Placement and Completion Rates. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students that start an academic program and complete it. It’s essential that the welder school you pick has a high completion rate. A low rate could signify that the students who joined the program were unhappy with the instruction, the teachers, or the facilities, and quit. The job placement rate is also an indication of the caliber of training. A high job placement rate will not only verify that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of Buzzards Bay MA contacts to help students obtain employment or apprenticeships upon graduation.

Modern Equipment and Facilities. Once you have decreased your selection of welder programs to 2 or 3 possibilities, you should think out visiting the campuses to evaluate their facilities. Confirm that both the equipment and the facilities that you will be instructed on are up-to-date. In particular, the training equipment should be similar to what you will be using in the field. If you are unsure what to look for, and are already in an apprenticeship program, ask the master welder you are working under for guidance. Otherwise, ask a local Buzzards Bay MA welding professional if they can give you some suggestions.

School Location. Although we previously briefly discussed the relevance of location, there are a few additional issues that we should deal with. You should bear in mind that unless you can move, the welding program you pick must be within commuting distance of your Buzzards Bay MA home. If you do opt to enroll in an out-of-state school, apart from relocation costs there could be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is particularly true for welding degree programs offered by community colleges. Furthermore, if the school offers a job placement or apprenticeship program, often their placements are within the school’s regional community. So the location of the school needs to be in an area or state where you subsequently will wish to work.

Smaller Classes. Individualized training is important for a manual trade such as welding. It’s easy to be overlooked in bigger classes and not get much individualized instruction. Find out what the average class size is for the welder programs you are considering. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of classes so that you can see just how much individual attention the students are getting. While there, talk with some of the students and get their opinions. Similarly, speak with a couple of the teachers and ask what their welding experience has been and what certifications and credentials they have earned.

Flexible Class Scheduling. Some people learn a new trade while still employed at their present job. Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are looking at are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Buzzards Bay MA, make certain that the schools you are reviewing provide those choices. If you can only enroll part-time, confirm that the school you choose offers part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the policy is to make up classes if you you miss any due to work, illness or family responsibilities.

Online Welding Certificate and Degree Programs

Buzzards Bay MA master welder attending online welding classesWelding is truly a hands-on kind of profession, and for that reason not very compatible with online training. Having said that, there are some online welding courses offered by various community colleges and technical schools in the greater Buzzards Bay MA area that may count toward a degree or certificate program. These courses mainly deal with such topics as safety, reading blueprints, and metallurgy. They can help give a novice a basis to initiate their training and education. Nevertheless, the most significant point is that you can’t learn how to weld or work with welding materials unless you actually do it. Obviously that can’t be accomplished online. These skills must be learned in an on-campus setting or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is more appropriate for experienced welders that would like to advance their expertise or possibly obtain a more advanced degree. So if you should come across an online welding certificate or degree program, be very cautious and verify that the greater part of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of environment.
