  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are normally offered by technical and trade schools and require about 1 year to complete. Welding Certification Choices

welder working in Bridgman MI shopThere are various institutions that offer welding certifications, which test the skill level and knowledge of those applying. Many Bridgman MI employers not only expect a degree or certificate from an accredited welding school, but also certification from a renowned agency such as the American Welding Society (AWS). A wide range of certifications are offered based upon the type of work that the welder does. A few of the things that certification can acknowledge are the welder’s ability to

  • Operate in compliance with specific codes
  • Work with specific metal thicknesses
  • Work with specific kinds of welds
  • Perform based on contract specifications

As formerly stated, various states, cities or local municipalities have licensing requirements for welders. Of those calling for licensing, many also require certification for various types of work. Certification is also a way to demonstrate to employers that you are an extremely skilled and qualified welder. So similarly as with licensing, check the requirements for your location and confirm that the welding technical school you decide on readies you for certification if needed.

Points to Ask Welding Tech Schools

What to ask Bridgman MI welding schoolsAfter you have chosen the credential you want to attain, a degree, certificate or diploma, you can begin to compare schools. As you can imagine, there are a large number of welding trade and technical schools in the Bridgman MI area. That’s why it’s important to establish in advance what qualifications your selected school must have. We have already covered two important ones that many people look at first, which are location and the cost of tuition. As stated, although they are very important qualifications, they are not the only ones that must be looked at. After all, the program you pick is going to furnish the training that will be the foundation of your new career as a welder. So following are more factors you may need to evaluate before selecting a welder vocational school.

Accreditation. It’s very important that the welder vocational school you decide on is accredited by either a national or a regional agency. There are two basic types of accreditation. The school may earn Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on an individual program the school offers, such as Welding Technology. So make certain that the program you choose is accredited, not just the school alone. Additionally, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, like the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). In addition to helping ensure that you receive a superior education, the accreditation may also assist in getting financial assistance or student loans, which are often not available in Bridgman MI for schools that are not accredited. Finally, for those states or municipalities that mandate licensing, they may require that the welder training program be accredited also.

Apprenticeship and Job Placement Programs. Numerous welding certificate or degree programs are provided combined with an apprenticeship program. Other schools will help place you in an apprenticeship or a job after graduation. Ask if the schools you are looking at help in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job assistance program. The schools must have relationships with local unions and various metal working businesses to which they can refer their students. Older schools may have a more substantial network of graduates that they can rely upon for referrals. These programs can assist students in finding employment and establish relationships within the Bridgman MI welding community.

Job Placement and Completion Rates. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students that begin an educational program and finish it. It’s crucial that the welder school you pick has a higher completion rate. A reduced rate could mean that the students who enrolled in the program were unhappy with the training, the instructors, or the facilities, and dropped out. The job placement rate is also a good indicator of the caliber of training. A higher job placement rate will not only confirm that the program has a good reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of Bridgman MI employer relationships to assist students obtain apprenticeships or employment upon graduation.

Modern Facilities and Equipment. Once you have narrowed down your choice of welding programs to two or three options, you should consider going to the campuses to look over their facilities. Make sure that both the facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are modern. In particular, the training equipment should be similar to what you will be working with in the field. If you are uncertain what to look for, and are already in an apprenticeship program, ask the master welder you are working under for guidance. If not, ask a local Bridgman MI welding professional if they can give you a few suggestions.

School Location. Although we previously briefly covered the relevance of location, there are a couple of additional points that we should address. You should keep in mind that unless you have the ability to relocate, the welding school you choose must be within commuting distance of your Bridgman MI home. If you do choose to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there may be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is especially true for welder diploma programs offered by community colleges. Also, if the school offers an apprenticeship or job placement program, often their placements are within the school’s regional community. So the location of the school should be in an area or state where you subsequently will desire to work.

Smaller Classes. Personalized instruction is essential for a manual trade such as welding. It’s easy to be overlooked in bigger classes and not obtain much personalized instruction. Find out what the typical class size is for the welding programs you are reviewing. Inquire if you can attend a few classes so that you can see how much personal attention the students are receiving. While there, talk with a few of the students and get their evaluations. Similarly, speak with some of the teachers and find out what their welding experience has been and what certifications and credentials they have earned.

Convenient Class Schedules. Many people learn a new trade while still working at their present job. Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Bridgman MI, confirm that the schools you are assessing provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, check to see what the protocol is to make up classes should you miss any due to illness, work or family responsibilities.

Online Welder Courses

Bridgman MI master welder attending online welding classesWelding is very much a manual type of profession, and consequently not extremely compatible with training online. Having said that, there are some online welding courses offered by various community colleges and technical schools in the greater Bridgman MI area that can count toward a certificate or degree program. These courses primarily cover such topics as safety, reading blueprints, and metallurgy. They can help give a beginner a basis to initiate their training and education. Nevertheless, the most important point is that you can’t learn how to weld or work with welding materials until you actually do it. Obviously that can’t be accomplished online. These skills need to be learned in an on-campus environment or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is more appropriate for seasoned welders that would like to advance their expertise or perhaps obtain a more advanced degree. So if you should discover an online welding degree or certificate program, be extremely careful and make sure that the majority of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of environment.
