  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are usually made available by technical and trade schools and require about 1 year to finish. • Operate in compliance with specific codes
  • Work with specific metal thicknesses

  • Perform based on contract specifications

As formerly stated, some cities, states or local municipalities have licensing mandates for welders. So just as with licensing, look into the requirements for your location and verify that the welding technical school you decide on readies you for certification as needed.

Questions to Ask Welding Trade Programs

What to ask Marked Tree AR welding schoolsAfter you have decided on the credential you want to obtain, a diploma, certificate or degree, you can begin to assess schools. As you can imagine, there are a large number of welder trade and vocational schools in the Marked Tree AR area. That’s why it’s important to establish up front what qualifications your selected school must have. We have already discussed two significant ones that most people consider first, which are location and tuition cost. As mentioned, although they are very important qualifications, they are not the only ones that must be considered. After all, the program you pick is going to provide the instruction that will be the foundation of your new career as a welder. So following are some additional factors you might need to evaluate before picking a welder tech school.

Accreditation. It’s essential that the welder vocational school you select is accredited by either a regional or a national agency. There are two standard types of accreditation. The school may attain Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on an individual program the school offers, for example Welding Technology. So make certain that the program you select is accredited, not just the school itself. Also, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, like the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). Besides helping ensure that you receive a superior education, the accreditation may also assist in securing financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases not available in Marked Tree AR for schools that are not accredited. Also, for those states or local governments that require licensing, they may require that the welder training program be accredited also.

Job Placement and Apprenticeship Programs. Numerous welding diploma or degree programs are offered combined with an apprenticeship program. Various other schools will help place you in a job or an apprenticeship after graduation. Find out if the schools you are looking at assist in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job assistance program. The schools must have associations with local unions and other metal working businesses to which they can place their students. Older schools may have a more substantial network of graduates that they can rely upon for referrals. These programs can help students find employment and establish associations within the Marked Tree AR welding community.

Completion and Job Placement Rates. The completion rate is the percentage of students that enroll in an academic program and finish it. It’s crucial that the welder school you choose has a high completion rate. A lower rate could signify that the students who were in the program were dissatisfied with the instruction, the instructors, or the facilities, and quit. The job placement rate is also a good indicator of the quality of training. A high job placement rate will not only verify that the program has a good reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of Marked Tree AR contacts to assist students obtain apprenticeships or employment upon graduation.

Modern Facilities and Equipment. After you have narrowed down your choice of welder programs to two or three options, you should consider going to the campuses to inspect their facilities. Verify that both the equipment and the facilities that you will be taught on are modern. In particular, the training equipment should be comparable to what you will be using in the field. If you are unsure what to look for, and are already in an apprenticeship program, consult with the master welder you are working under for guidance. Otherwise, ask a local Marked Tree AR welding contractor if they can give you a few tips.

School Location. Even though we previously briefly talked about the significance of location, there are a couple of additional issues that we should cover. You should bear in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the welder program you choose must be within driving distance of your Marked Tree AR home. If you do choose to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation expenses there may be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is especially true for welding diploma programs offered by community colleges. Additionally, if the school provides an apprenticeship or job placement program, more than likely their placements are within the school’s local community. So the location of the school needs to be in a region or state where you subsequently will want to work.

Smaller Classes. Personalized instruction is essential for a hands-on trade such as welding. It’s easy to get overlooked in bigger classes and not obtain much one-on-one instruction. Find out what the typical class size is for the welder programs you are looking at. Ask if you can sit in on some classes so that you can experience just how much personal attention the students are getting. While there, talk with some of the students and get their opinions. Also, speak with a couple of the instructors and ask what their welding experience has been and what credentials and certifications they have earned.

Convenient Class Scheduling. Many people learn a new trade while still working at their current job. Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are looking at are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evenings or on weekends near Marked Tree AR, verify that the schools you are assessing offer those choices. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify that the school you choose offers part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the protocol is to make up classes should you miss any due to illness, work or family circumstances.

Online Welder Courses

Marked Tree AR master welder attending online welding classesWelding is very much a hands-on type of trade, and consequently not very compatible with online training. Having said that, there are a small number of online welding courses offered by certain community colleges and vocational schools in the greater Marked Tree AR area that may count toward a degree or certificate program. These courses primarily cover such subjects as reading blueprints, safety,, and metallurgy. They can help give a novice a foundation to start their education and training. However, the most important point is that you can’t learn how to weld or use welding materials unless you actually do it. Naturally that can’t be done online. These skills have to be learned in an on-campus setting or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is better suited for seasoned welders that want to advance their expertise or possibly attain a more advanced degree. So if you should discover an online welding degree or certificate program, be very cautious and make certain that the greater part of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of setting.
