As of the census[3] of 2010, there were 108 people, 48 households, and 27 families residing in the town. The population density was 251.2 inhabitants per square mile (97.0/km2). There were 55 housing units at an average density of 127.9 per square mile (49.4/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 91.7% White, 2.8% Native American, 0.9% from other races, and 4.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.9% of the population.

There were 48 households of which 27.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.8% were married couples living together, 4.2% had a female householder with no husband present, 8.3% had a male householder with no wife present, and 43.8% were non-families. 33.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.25 and the average family size was 2.89.

Wagner, South Dakota

At the 2010 census,[3] there were 1,566 people, 639 households and 367 families residing in the city. The population density was 767.6 inhabitants per square mile (296.4/km2). The average household size was 2.36 and the average family size was 3.20.

The median age was 42.8 years. 27.2% of residents were under the age of 18; 6.8% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 18.5% were from 25 to 44; 23.3% were from 45 to 64; and 24.1% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 47.7% male and 52.3% female.

Wilmot, South Dakota

Wilmot is a city in Roberts County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 492 at the 2010 census. Wilmot, as well as Brookings, SD, were named for Wilmot Brookings, who was provisional governor of the Dakota Territory.

As of the census[3] of 2010, there were 492 people, 208 households, and 122 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,004.1 inhabitants per square mile (387.7/km2). There were 237 housing units at an average density of 483.7 per square mile (186.8/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 89.4% White, 7.9% Native American, 0.4% from other races, and 2.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.4% of the population.

Sturgis, South Dakota

Sturgis is a city in Meade County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 6,627 as of the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Meade County[7] and is named after Union General Samuel D. Sturgis.

Sturgis is notable as the location of one of the largest annual motorcycle events in the world, which is held on the first full week of August. Motorcycle enthusiasts from around the world migrate to this town during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. Sturgis is also noted for hosting WCW's Hog Wild/Road Wild events in 1996, 1997, 1998, and 1999.

Sturgis was founded in 1878.[8] It was originally named Scooptown, because many of the residents "scooped up" their pay from nearby Fort Meade.[9] Its name was later changed to Sturgis in honor of the Civil War Union General Samuel D. Sturgis.[10] In 1889, Sturgis was designated as the county seat of the newly formed Meade County.[8]

Wakonda, South Dakota

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.39 square miles (1.01 km2), all of it land.[2] Corn and soybeans are grown on the farms surrounding the town. The climate is humid continental, with hot summers and cold winters. Annual precipitation is about 25 inches.

As of the census[3] of 2010, there were 321 people, 128 households, and 72 families residing in the town. The population density was 823.1 inhabitants per square mile (317.8/km2). There were 163 housing units at an average density of 417.9 per square mile (161.4/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 98.4% White, 0.3% African American, and 1.2% from other races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.

Winner, South Dakota

Winner is a city in Tripp County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 2,897 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Tripp County.[7] Winner also serves as the administrative center of neighboring Todd County, which does not have its own county seat.[8] The nearest airport is Winner Regional Airport.

Winner, located in the south central part of the state, features a climate type (Köppen Dfa) often described as a hot summer humid continental climate. Winters average below the −3 °C (26.6 °F) persistent snow line isotherm, and Summers average above 22 °C (72 °F) Köppen hot summer isotherm. The climate features nearly even four seasons, typical of its classification. The all-time high temperature is 112 °F (44 °C), set in 2003 and 1965, and the all-time low temperature is −29 °F (−34 °C), set in 1989.

As of the census[3] of 2010, there were 2,897 people, 1,328 households, and 717 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,316.8 inhabitants per square mile (508.4/km2). There were 1,547 housing units at an average density of 703.2 per square mile (271.5/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 82.1% White, 0.2% African American, 14.0% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.3% from other races, and 3.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.4% of the population.

Summit, South Dakota

As of the census[3] of 2010, there were 288 people, 112 households, and 69 families residing in the town. The population density was 514.3 inhabitants per square mile (198.6/km2). There were 129 housing units at an average density of 230.4 per square mile (89.0/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 63.5% White, 0.3% African American, 29.2% Native American, 0.3% Asian, and 6.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.0% of the population.

There were 112 households of which 42.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.2% were married couples living together, 10.7% had a female householder with no husband present, 10.7% had a male householder with no wife present, and 38.4% were non-families. 33.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.32.

The median age in the town was 32.5 years. 35.4% of residents were under the age of 18; 6.6% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 25% were from 25 to 44; 23.3% were from 45 to 64; and 9.7% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the town was 53.1% male and 46.9% female.

Wakpala, South Dakota

Wakpala is an unincorporated community in Corson County, South Dakota, United States, on the west side of the Missouri River, north-northwest of Mobridge. Although not tracked by the Census Bureau, Wakpala has been assigned the ZIP code of 57658. Wakpala is within the boundaries of the Standing Rock Indian Reservation, and its name loosely translates to "creek" in the Lakota language,[3] with Oak Creek running south on its eastern edge.

Chief Gall (Piji, Pizhi) is buried at Saint Elizabeth Episcopal Cemetery here and Chief Sitting Bull (Tatanka Iyotake) is possibly buried under a concrete bust bearing his name a few miles south of town in the Mobridge area. Sitting Bull was originally buried at Fort Yates, North Dakota but an effort was made to exhume his bones and rebury him at the present site, but some individuals assert that the bones moved are not his.

New Witten, South Dakota

As of the census[2] of 2010, there were 79 people, 35 households, and 22 families residing in the town. The population density was 282.1 inhabitants per square mile (108.9/km2). There were 51 housing units at an average density of 182.1 per square mile (70.3/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.5% White and 2.5% from two or more races.

There were 35 households of which 22.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.4% were married couples living together, 5.7% had a female householder with no husband present, 5.7% had a male householder with no wife present, and 37.1% were non-families. 37.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.26 and the average family size was 2.91.

The median age in the town was 48.3 years. 24.1% of residents were under the age of 18; 5.1% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 18.9% were from 25 to 44; 33% were from 45 to 64; and 19% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the town was 50.6% male and 49.4% female.

Bon Homme County, South Dakota

Bon Homme County was created in 1862. "Bon Homme" was first used by Lewis and Clark in 1804 as the name for a 2,000 acre island in the Missouri River. When settlers arrived in the late 1850s they borrowed the name, and when the county was created it was named for the village of Bon Homme. A proposal to change the county name to "Jefferson" in 1865 was rejected. The French word "bonhomme" means "good man." [4][5] The original island is now submerged under Lewis and Clark Lake.[6] The village of Bon Homme was the original county seat until 1885, when it moved to Tyndall.[7]

Bon Homme County lies on the south line of South Dakota. Its south boundary line abuts the north boundary line of the state of Nebraska (across the Missouri River). The west boundary line of the county is roughly defined by Choteau Creek, which flows southward to discharge in the river. The county terrain consists of low rolling hills, sloping to the river valley; most of the area is devoted to agriculture. The terrain's highest point is the county's NW corner, at 1,883' (574m) ASL.[9]

As of the 2000 United States Census,[26] there were 7,260 people, 2,635 households, and 1,786 families in the county. The population density was 13 people per square mile (5/km²). There were 3,007 housing units at an average density of 5 per square mile (2/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 95.51% White, 0.62% Black or African American, 2.99% Native American, 0.08% Asian, 0.18% from other races, and 0.62% from two or more races. 0.58% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. 41.3% were of German, 19.8% Czech and 9.9% Dutch ancestry.
