Rolette County, North Dakota

The Dakota Territory legislature created the county on January 4, 1873, with territory partitioned from Buffalo County. It was not organized at that date, and was not attached to another county for judicial or administrative purposes. It was named for Joseph Rolette Jr., a fur trader and political figure from Pembina. The county government was effected on October 14, 1884, with Dunseith as the county seat. In 1885 the county seat was assigned to Saint John, and in 1889 it was assigned to Rolla.

Rolette County lies on the north line of North Dakota. Its north boundary line abuts the south boundary line of Canada. Gimby Creek and Wakopa Creek flow into the northern county area from Canada. The terrain consists of dry rolling hills in the south, and more verdant low hills in the north and northwest, dotted with lakes and ponds.[5]

As of the 2000 United States Census there were 13,674 people, 4,556 households, and 3,366 families in the county. The population density was 15.1/sqmi (5.85/km²). There were 5,027 housing units at an average density of 5.57/sqmi (2.15/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 25.12% White, 0.07% Black or African American, 73.01% Native American, 0.07% Asian, 0.12% from other races, and 1.61% from two or more races. 0.80% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. 9.3% were of Norwegian and 7.4% German ancestry. 94.6% spoke English, 1.3% Ojibwa, 1.0% French Cree and 1.0% Cree as their first language.

Surrey

Surrey (/ˈsʌri/ SURR-ee)[2] is a county in South East England which borders Kent to the east, West Sussex to the south, Hampshire to the west, Berkshire to the northwest, and Greater London to the northeast.

With about 1.2 million people, Surrey is the twelfth most populous English county, the third most populous home county, after Kent and Essex, and the third most populous in the South East, after Hampshire and Kent.

The London boroughs of Lambeth, Southwark, Wandsworth, and parts of Lewisham and Bromley were in Surrey until 1889, as were Croydon, Kingston upon Thames, Merton, Sutton and the part of Richmond upon Thames on the right bank of the River Thames until 1965, when they were absorbed into Greater London, and the county extended north of the Thames by the addition of Spelthorne, as a result of the dissolution of Middlesex.

Wahpeton, North Dakota

Wahpeton (/ˈwɑːpɪtən/ WAH-pit-ən) is a city in Richland County, in southeastern North Dakota, United States. It is located along the Bois de Sioux River at its confluence with the Otter Tail River, forming the Red River of the North. Wahpeton is the county seat of Richland County.[5] Thepopulation was 7,766 at the 2010 Census.

Wahpeton was founded in 1869 and is the principal city of the Wahpeton Micropolitan Statistical Area, which includes all of Richland County, North Dakota and Wilkin County, Minnesota. Wahpeton's twin city is Breckenridge, Minnesota, located to the east on the other side of the river. The Bois de Sioux River and the Otter Tail River join at Wahpeton and Breckenridge to form the Red River of the North.

The first European explorer in the area was Jonathan Carver in 1767. He explored and mapped the Northwest at the request of Major Robert Rogers, commander of Fort Michilimackinac. This British fort at Mackinaw City, Michigan, protected the passage between Lake Michigan and Lake Huron of the Great Lakes. In 1763 the British had extended their reach in Canada after defeating the French in the Seven Years' War.

Zeeland

Zeeland (/ˈziːlənd/; Dutch pronunciation: [ˈzeːlɑnt] (listen), Zeelandic: Zeêland [ˈzɪə̯lɑnt], historical English exonym Zealand) is the westernmost and least populous province of the Netherlands. The province, located in the south-west of the country, consists of a number of islands and peninsulas (hence its name, meaning "Sealand") and a strip bordering Belgium. Its capital is Middelburg. Its area is about 2,930 square kilometres (1,130 sq mi), of which almost 1,140 square kilometres (440 sq mi) is water, and it has a population of about 380,000.

Large parts of Zeeland are below sea level. The last great flooding of the area was in 1953. Tourism is an important economic activity. In the summer, its beaches make it a popular destination for tourists, especially German tourists. In some areas, the population can be two to four times higher during the high summer season. The coat of arms of Zeeland shows a lion half-emerged from water, and the text luctor et emergo (Latin for "I struggle and emerge").[2] The country of New Zealand was named after Zeeland after it was sighted by Dutch explorer Abel Tasman.

Nehalennia is a mythological goddess of an ancient religion known around the province of Zeeland. Her worship dates back at least to the 2nd century BC,[3] and flourished in the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD.[3] She was possibly a regional god, either Celtic or pre-Germanic – but sources differ on the culture that first worshipped her. During the Roman era, her main function appeared to be the protection of travelers, especially seagoing travelers crossing the North Sea. Most of what is known about her mythology comes from the remains of carved stone offerings (votives) which have been dredged up from the Oosterschelde (Eastern Scheldt) since 1970. Two more Nehalennia offering stones have also been found in Cologne, Germany.[3]

Rolla, North Dakota

Rolla (/ˈrɒlə/ ROL-ə) is a city in Rolette County, North Dakota, United States. It is the county seat of Rolette County.[5] The population was 1,280 at the 2010 census.[6] The city contains a small park and a small outdoor pool.

Rolla was laid out in 1888.[7] The name Rolla was most likely derived from Rolette, the county in which the city is located.[8] A post office has been in operation in Rolla since 1888.[9] The city was incorporated in 1907.[7]

As of the census[2] of 2010, there were 1,280 people, 563 households, and 321 families residing in the city. The population density was 895.1 inhabitants per square mile (345.6/km2). There were 619 housing units at an average density of 432.9 per square mile (167.1/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 54.1% White, 0.1% African American, 40.9% Native American, 0.6% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 4.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.8% of the population.

Sykeston, North Dakota

Sykeston was founded in 1883 by Richard Sykes, a prominent landowner and founder of several other cities in the state.[6] The city was the county seat of Wells County from 1884 to 1894, when Fessenden took over that role.[7]

As of the census[2] of 2010, there were 117 people, 65 households, and 36 families residing in the city. The population density was 307.9 inhabitants per square mile (118.9/km2). There were 85 housing units at an average density of 223.7 per square mile (86.4/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 98.3% White, 0.9% Asian, and 0.9% from two or more races.

There were 65 households of which 13.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 38.5% were married couples living together, 9.2% had a female householder with no husband present, 7.7% had a male householder with no wife present, and 44.6% were non-families. 36.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 1.80 and the average family size was 2.25.

Walhalla, North Dakota

Walhalla is a city in Pembina County, North Dakota, United States. It sits on the banks of the Pembina River, five miles (8 km) from the border with Manitoba (Canada) and approximately 45 mi (72 km) from the border with Minnesota. The population was 996 at the 2010 census.[6]

Walhalla was established in 1845.[7] Walhalla is the second oldest town in North Dakota, its history bound up in the fur trade of the Red River Valley.[8] One mile northeast of town is the North West Company fur trading post, established in 1797 by David Thompson, and in 1801 moved to a site one mile east of Walhalla, where a reconstructed building is now located.

In town is the Kittson Trading Post, established by Norman Kittson, an American Fur Company agent, in 1843. This is the oldest building in North Dakota. It is located in the Walhalla State Historical Park and is preserved by the State Historical Society.[10]

Hiddenwood National Wildlife Refuge

Hiddenwood National Wildlife Refuge is a 568-acre (230 ha) National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) in the U.S. state of North Dakota.[2][3] The refuge is an Easement refuge that is entirely on privately owned land, but the landowners and U.S. Government work cooperatively to protect the resources.[4] The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service oversees Hiddenwood NWR from offices at Audubon National Wildlife Refuge.[5]

Tappen, North Dakota

As of the census[2] of 2010, there were 197 people, 89 households, and 52 families residing in the city. The population density was 187.6 inhabitants per square mile (72.4/km2). There were 106 housing units at an average density of 101.0 per square mile (39.0/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.0% White, 0.5% African American, 1.5% from other races, and 1.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.5% of the population.

There were 89 households of which 28.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.7% were married couples living together, 5.6% had a female householder with no husband present, 10.1% had a male householder with no wife present, and 41.6% were non-families. 34.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.21 and the average family size was 2.81.

The median age in the city was 40.3 years. 23.4% of residents were under the age of 18; 9.1% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 25.4% were from 25 to 44; 27.4% were from 45 to 64; and 14.7% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 52.8% male and 47.2% female.
