According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 7.0 square miles (18.2 km2), of which 5.4 square miles (13.9 km2) is land and 1.7 square miles (4.4 km2), or 23.92%, is water.[3]

As of the census[4] of 2000, there were 10,506 people, 2,595 households, and 2,221 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 3,086.0 people per square mile (1,193.1/km²). There were 2,925 housing units at an average density of 859.2 per square mile (332.2/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 9.35% White, 0.81% African American, 0.26% Native American, 19.44% Asian, 27.26% Pacific Islander, 0.97% from other races, and 41.92% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 14.00% of the population.

There were 2,595 households out of which 43.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.0% were married couples living together, 19.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 14.4% were non-families. 10.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 4.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 4.04 and the average family size was 4.30.

Waikoloa Village, Hawaii

Waikoloa Village is a census-designated place (CDP) in Hawaiʻi County, Hawaiʻi, United States. The population was 6,362 at the 2010 census,[1] up from 4,806 at the 2000 census. The name Waikoloa is used by the local post office.[2]

Waikoloa Village is located on the west side of the island of Hawaiʻi at 19°56′29″N 155°47′34″W / 19.94139°N 155.79278°W / 19.94139; -155.79278 (19.941445, −155.792655).[3] It is bordered to the west by Puako. Hawaii Route 19 forms the border between the two communities; it leads northeast 14 miles (23 km) to Waimea and southwest 28 miles (45 km) to Kailua-Kona.

As of the census[5] of 2000, there were 4,806 people, 1,750 households, and 1,225 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 251.1 people per square mile (96.9/km²). There were 2,057 housing units at an average density of 107.5 per square mile (41.5/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 45.92% White, 0.48% African American, 0.21% Native American, 16.65% Asian, 9.20% Pacific Islander, 1.46% from other races, and 26.09% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.99% of the population.

Wailuku, Hawaii

Wailuku is located just west of Kahului, at the mouth of the ʻĪao Valley. In the early 20th century Wailuku was the main tourist destination on Maui, though it has since been eclipsed with the rise of the resort towns such as Kaʻanapali, so much so that there are currently no hotels to speak of in Wailuku.

Historic sites in the town include Kaʻahumanu Church (named after one of Hawaiʻi's great monarchs, Queen Kaʻahumanu) which dates to 1876, the Wailuku Civic Center Historic District, the site of the Chee Kung Tong Society Building, and the Bailey House, a 19th-century former seminary and home that houses a history museum and the Maui Historical Society.

There are two ancient temples near Wailuku, called heiau — the Halekiʻi Heiau and the Pihanakalani Heiau. Both date back hundreds of years and were used for religious purposes by the native Hawaiians.[citation needed]

Waipahu, Hawaii

Waipahu is a former sugarcane plantation town and now census-designated place (CDP) located in the ʻEwa District on the island of Oʻahu in the City & County of Honolulu, Hawaiʻi, United States. As of the 2010 Census, the CDP population was 38,216.[1] The U.S. postal code for Waipahu is 96797.

Waipahu is the name of an artesian spring.[2] In Hawaiian, Waipahu is derived from wai, meaning water, and pahū, meaning "burst or explode"; combined, Waipahu means "water forced up (as out of a spring)".[3] The early Native Hawaiians took pleasure in the cool and clear water gushing from the ground and named this spring Waipahu. Before the Western civilization set foot in Hawaii, the Hawaiians considered Waipahu to be the capital of Oahu. Royalty in the Kingdom of Hawaii would often gather and enjoy the fresh water from the spring Waipahu.[2]

In 1897, Oahu Sugar Company was incorporated, and its board of directors located the sugar mill in Waipahu. It had 943 field workers. There were 44 Hawaiians, including 10 minors; 57 Portuguese; 443 Japanese, 408 of them contract laborers; and 399 Chinese, 374 of whom were contract laborers.[4] The company's managers from 1897 to 1940 were August Ahrens (1897–1904), E.K. Bull (1904–1919), J.B. Thomson (1919–1923), E.W. Greene (1923–1937), and Hans L'Orange (1937–1956).[5]

Wheeler Army Airfield

Wheeler Army Airfield (IATA: HHI, ICAO: PHHI, FAA LID: HHI), also known as Wheeler Field and formerly as Wheeler Air Force Base, is a United States Army post located in the City & County of Honolulu and in the Wahiawa District of the Island of O'ahu, Hawaii.[4][5] It is a National Historic Landmark for its role in the 7 December 1941 Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.[3]

Wheeler AAF comprises approximately 1,389 acres (5.62 km2) of land adjacent to Schofield Barracks and is home to a variety of Department of Defense activities including the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA), the 169th Aircraft Control & Warning Squadron (169 ACWS) of the Hawaii Air National Guard, the 193rd Aviation Regiment (Medium Lift), Detachment 55 Operational Support Airlift (Det 55 OSA) of the Hawaii Army National Guard, the Regular Army's 25th Infantry Division's Combat Aviation Brigade, and Trial Defense Service-Hawaii.[6][7]

On 6 February 1922, a detachment of 20 enlisted men from Luke Field, proceeded to Schofield Barracks, under Lieutenant William T. Agee, to clear the flying field on the grounds of the former 17th Cavalry Regiment drill grounds and construct housing for the divisional air service. Two canvas hangars were erected and the field cleared of weeds, guava and algaroba trees. Thus Wheeler Field got its modest start. It was named Wheeler Field on 11 November 1922 in honor of Major Sheldon H. Wheeler, former commander of Luke Field on Ford Island, killed in the crash of DH-4B, AAS Ser. No. 63525 on 13 July 1921.[8]

Honolulu

Honolulu (/ˌhɒnəˈluːluː/;[6]Hawaiian: [honoˈlulu]) is the capital and largest city of the U.S. state of Hawaii. It is an unincorporated part of and the county seat of the City and County of Honolulu along the southeast coast of the island of Oʻahu.[a] The city is the main gateway to Hawaiʻi and a major portal into the United States. The city is also a major hub for international business, military defense, as well as famously being host to a diverse variety of east-west and Pacific culture, cuisine, and traditions.

Honolulu is the most remote city of its size in the world,[8] and is the westernmost and southernmost major U.S. city. For statistical purposes, the United States Census Bureau recognizes the approximate area commonly referred to as "City of Honolulu" (not to be confused with the "City and County") as a census county division (CCD).[9] Honolulu is a major financial center of the islands and of the Pacific Ocean. The population of the Honolulu census designated place (CDP) was 359,870 as of the 2017 population estimate,[4] while the Honolulu CCD was 390,738[10] and the population of the consolidated city and county was 953,207.

Honolulu means "sheltered harbor"[11] or "calm port".[12] The old name is Kou, a district roughly encompassing the area from Nuʻuanu Avenue to Alakea Street and from Hotel Street to Queen Street which is the heart of the present downtown district.[13] The city has been the capital of the Hawaiian Islands since 1845 and gained historical recognition following the attack on Pearl Harbor by Japan near the city on December 7, 1941.

Kilauea, Hawaii

Kilauea is on the northeastern shore of Kauai and is bordered to the west by Kalihiwai and to the north by the Pacific Ocean. Hawaii Route 56 passes through the south side of the community, leading west 7 miles (11 km) to Hawaii and east 6 miles (10 km) to the Moloaa area which includes Moloaa Forest Reserve and overlooks Moloaa Bay.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the Kilauea CDP has a total area of 5.3 square miles (13.6 km2), of which 4.9 square miles (12.8 km2) are land and 0.3 square miles (0.8 km2), or 5.71%, are water.[1]

Pukalani, Hawaii

Pukalani is a census-designated place (CDP) in Maui County, Hawaiʻi, United States. The population was 7,574 at the 2010 census.[1] The general volcano-slope region, including nearby Makawao and Kula, is referred to as upcountry by locals, and is one of the four major population centers on Maui, the other three being Kahului, Lahaina and Kīhei, all of which are at sea level.

Pukalani (pronounced Poo-cah-lah-nee) in Hawaiian means "window of heaven". It has also been said it was originally called Pu'ukalani meaning hill of heaven. It is commonly misinterpreted to mean "hole in the sky". This misinterpretation comes from the plantation and immigration movement to Hawa'i'i, uniting multiple cultures and creating a new language called "Pidgin" or "Pidgin English" referring to Puka as hole. Clouds form above and below the community on Haleakalā, leaving Pukalani sunny most of the time. With cool and often brisk temperatures. Pukalani is one of the few places besides Haleakala and Kula that one can view the northern, western, and eastern sides of Maui.

As of the census[4] of 2000, there were 7,379 people, 2,439 households, and 1,904 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 1,671.1 people per square mile (644.7/km²). There were 2,522 housing units at an average density of 571.1 per square mile (220.3/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 33.97% White, 0.41% African American, 0.23% Native American, 28.04% Asian, 7.38% Pacific Islander, 1.00% from other races, and 28.97% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 9.23% of the population.

Hoʻolehua, Hawaii

Hoʻolehua (also spelled Hoolehua) is an unincorporated community on the island of Molokai in Maui County, Hawaii, United States. It lies just off Hawaii Route 460, next to the Molokai Airport.[1] Its elevation is 620 feet (189 m). Because the community's name has been spelled multiple ways, the Board on Geographic Names officially designated it "Hoʻolehua" in 2003.[2] Although it is unincorporated, it has a post office, with the ZIP code of 96729.[3]

Koloa, Hawaii

Kōloa is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Kauaʻi County, Hawaiʻi, United States. The population was 2,144 at the 2010 census,[1] up from 1,942 at the 2000 census. The first successful sugarcane plantation in the Hawaiian Islands was started here in 1835. It became a part of Grove Farm in 1948.

The name Kōloa is often incorrectly translated as "native duck", which is the correct translation for the similar-looking koloa (without the macron).[2]Kōloa has no known translation.[3] According to one account, the district of Kōloa was named for a steep rock called Pali-o-kō-loa which was found in Waikomo Stream.

Kōloa is located on the southern side of the island of Kauai at 21°54′26″N 159°27′57″W / 21.90722°N 159.46583°W / 21.90722; -159.46583 (21.907137, -159.465877).[4] It is bordered to the northwest by Omao and to the south by Poipu.
