Welding Certificate and Degree Training Classes

welding car in Roy NMThere are several alternatives available to get training as a welder in a technical or trade school. You can receive a diploma, a certificate or an Associate Degree. Bachelor Degrees are available in Welding Engineering or Welding Technology, but are more advanced programs than most journeyman welders will need. Some programs are also offered combined with an apprenticeship program. Below are brief explanations of the most prevalent welding programs offered in the Roy NM area.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are normally made available by trade and technical schools and require about one year to complete. They are more hands-on training in scope, fashioned largely to develop welding skills. They can furnish a good foundation for a new journeyman or apprentice welder, or additional skills for working welders.
  • Associate Degree Programs will take 2 years to finish and are usually offered by community colleges. An Associate Degree in Welding Technology provides a more extensive education than the diploma or certificate while still supplying the foundation that readies students to enter the workforce.

Many states and municipalities do have licensing requirements for welders, therefore don’t forget to check for your location of potential employment. If needed, the welding school you select should prepare you for any licensing examinations that you will need to take in addition to supplying the appropriate training to become a professional welder.

Welding Certification Choices

welder working in Roy NM shopThere are various organizations that provide welder certifications, which test the knowledge and skill level of those applying. A large number of Roy NM employers not only require a certificate or degree from an accredited welding school, but also certification from a respected agency such as the American Welding Society (AWS). A variety of certifications are offered based on the kind of work that the welder does. Just some of the skills that certification can attest to are the welder’s ability to

  • Work in compliance with specific codes
  • Work with specified metal thicknesses
  • Work with specific kinds of welds
  • Operate based on contract specifications

As formerly mentioned, some cities, states or local municipalities have licensing mandates for welders. Of those calling for licensing, some also require certification for various types of work. Certification is also a means to prove to employers that you are an extremely skilled and experienced welder. So just as with licensing, check the requirements for your location and confirm that the welding tech school you choose prepares you for certification as needed.

What to Ask Welding Trade Schools

What to ask Roy NM welding schoolsOnce you have decided on the credential you want to earn, a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to compare schools. As you probably know, there are many welding trade and vocational schools in the Roy NM area. That’s why it’s necessary to decide up front what qualifications your selected school must have. We have previously covered a couple of important ones that many people consider first, which are location and the cost of tuition. As mentioned, although they are very important qualifications, they are not the only ones that should be considered. After all, the school you decide on is going to provide the training that will be the foundation of your new career as a welder. So below are some additional factors you might need to evaluate before choosing a welding vocational school.

Accreditation. It’s extremely important that the welder vocational school you select is accredited by either a regional or a national agency. There are two basic kinds of accreditation. The school may attain Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on an individual program the school has, for example Welding Technology. So make sure that the program you choose is accredited, not just the school itself. Additionally, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, like the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). Besides helping make sure that you obtain a superior education, the accreditation might also assist in securing financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases not available in Roy NM for non-accredited schools. Also, for those states or local governments that require licensing, they may require that the welder training program be accredited as well.

Job Assistance and Apprenticeship Programs. Numerous welding certificate or degree programs are offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship program. Some other schools will assist in placing you in an apprenticeship or a job upon graduation. Ask if the schools you are considering help in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job assistance program. These schools must have relationships with local unions and other metal working businesses to which they can place their students. Older schools may have a more substantial network of graduates that they can utilize for placements. These programs can assist students in finding employment and establish associations within the Roy NM welding community.

Completion and Job Placement Rates. The completion rate is the percentage of students that enroll in an academic program and complete it. It’s essential that the welding school you select has a high completion rate. A low rate could indicate that the students who joined the program were dissatisfied with the instruction, the instructors, or the facilities, and dropped out. The job placement rate is also an indication of the quality of training. A higher job placement rate will not only verify that the program has an excellent reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of Roy NM contacts to help students secure apprenticeships or employment upon graduation.

Up-to-date Equipment and Facilities. After you have limited your choice of welder programs to 2 or 3 options, you should consider going to the campuses to inspect their facilities. Confirm that both the equipment and the facilities that you will be instructed on are modern. Specifically, the training equipment should be similar to what you will be working with in the field. If you are uncertain what to look for, and are already in an apprenticeship program, ask the master welder you are working under for guidance. Otherwise, ask a local Roy NM welding professional if they can give you a few pointers.

School Location. Although we already briefly discussed the relevance of location, there are a couple of additional points that we should address. You should bear in mind that unless you can relocate, the welding program you choose needs to be within driving distance of your Roy NM home. If you do opt to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there might be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is especially the case for welding degree programs offered by community colleges. Also, if the school provides a job placement or apprenticeship program, most likely their placements are within the school’s local community. So the location of the school needs to be in an area or state where you subsequently will want to work.

Small Classes. Individualized training is important for a manual trade such as welding. It’s possible to get lost in bigger classes and not receive much one-on-one instruction. Ask what the average class size is for the welding programs you are looking at. Ask if you can sit in on a few classes so that you can witness how much personal attention the students are receiving. While there, talk with some of the students and get their evaluations. Similarly, talk with a few of the teachers and find out what their welding experience has been and what credentials and certifications they hold.

Flexible Class Scheduling. Many people learn a new profession while still working at their current job. Check to see that the class schedules for the programs you are considering are convenient enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evenings or on weekends near Roy NM, confirm that the schools you are assessing provide those alternatives. If you can only enroll part-time, confirm that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, check to see what the policy is to make up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family emergencies.

Online Welder Schools

Roy NM master welder attending online welding classesWelding is truly a manual type of profession, and therefore not extremely suitable for training online. Even so, there are a small number of online welding programs offered by specific community colleges and trade schools in the greater Roy NM area that can be credited toward a degree or certificate program. These courses primarily cover such topics as safety, reading blueprints, and metallurgy. They can help provide a novice a basis to start their training and education. However, the most important point is that you can’t learn how to weld or work with welding materials until you actually do it. Obviously that can’t be accomplished online. These skills need to be learned in an on-campus environment or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is better suited for experienced welders that would like to advance their knowledge or perhaps earn a more advanced degree. So if you should discover an online welding degree or certificate program, be very cautious and confirm that the bulk of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of environment.
