Welder Degree and Certificate Training Programs

welding car in Riverside NJThere are multiple options available to obtain training as a welder in a trade or technical school. You can obtain a diploma, a certificate or an Associate Degree. Bachelor Degrees are offered in Welding Technology or Welding Engineering, but are more advanced degrees than most journeyman welders will need. Some programs are also made available in conjunction with an apprenticeship program. Below are brief descriptions of the most common welding programs available in the Riverside NJ area.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are generally made available by technical and trade schools and take about 1 year to finish. They are more hands-on training in nature, fashioned primarily to develop welding skills. They can provide a good foundation for a new journeyman or apprentice welder, or additional skills for working welders.
  • Associate Degree Programs will take two years to complete and are usually offered by community colleges. An Associate Degree in Welding Technology offers a more well-rounded education than the certificate or diploma while still providing the foundation that readies students to enter the workforce.

Some states and municipalities do have licensing prerequisites for welders, therefore be sure to find out for your location of potential employment. If required, the welding school you select should prepare you for any licensing exams that you will need to pass in addition to providing the appropriate training to become a qualified welder.

Welding Certification Alternatives

welder working in Riverside NJ shopThere are multiple institutions that offer welding certifications, which test the skill level and knowledge of those applying. A large number of Riverside NJ employers not only require a certificate or degree from an accredited welding school, but also certification from a renowned organization like the American Welding Society (AWS). A wide range of certifications are offered dependent on the kind of work that the welder performs. A few of the things that certification can acknowledge are the welder’s ability to

  • Work in compliance with specific codes
  • Work with certain metal thicknesses
  • Work with specific types of welds
  • Operate based on contract specifications

As formerly stated, some states, cities or local municipalities have licensing requirements for welders. Of those calling for licensing, a number additionally require certification for various types of work. Certification is also a way to demonstrate to employers that you are a highly skilled and experienced welder. So just as with licensing, look into the requirements for your location and confirm that the welding trade school you select preps you for certification if needed.

Topics to Ask Welding Vocational Programs

What to ask Riverside NJ welding schoolsWhen you have decided on the credential you would like to obtain, a degree, certificate or diploma, you can begin to assess schools. As you can imagine, there are many welding vocational and trade schools in the Riverside NJ area. That’s why it’s essential to decide in advance what qualifications your chosen school must have. We have previously covered two important ones that many people consider first, which are location and the cost of tuition. As mentioned, although they are essential qualifiers, they are not the only ones that should be looked at. After all, the school you select is going to furnish the training that will be the foundation of your new career as a welder. So following are some additional factors you may want to evaluate before selecting a welding technical school.

Accreditation. It’s extremely important that the welding vocational school you select is accredited by either a national or a regional agency. There are 2 basic kinds of accreditation. The school may receive Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on a specific program the school has, for example Welding Technology. So make certain that the program you pick is accredited, not just the school alone. Additionally, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, like the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). Besides helping make sure that you obtain a superior education, the accreditation may also assist in securing financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases not offered in Riverside NJ for non-accredited schools. Also, for those states or local governments that mandate licensing, they may require that the welder training program be accredited as well.

Apprenticeship and Job Assistance Programs. A large number of welder diploma or degree programs are offered combined with an apprenticeship program. Other schools will help place you in a job or an apprenticeship after graduation. Ask if the schools you are looking at assist in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job assistance program. These schools must have partnerships with local unions and other metal working businesses to which they can refer their students. More established schools may have a more substantial network of graduates that they can utilize for referrals. These programs can help students find employment and develop relationships within the Riverside NJ welding community.

Completion and Job Placement Rates. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students that begin an educational program and complete it. It’s important that the welder school you select has a high completion rate. A reduced rate might mean that the students who joined the program were unhappy with the training, the teachers, or the facilities, and quit. The job placement rate is also a good indicator of the caliber of training. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the program has a good reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of Riverside NJ employer relationships to assist students obtain employment or apprenticeships after graduation.

Up-to-date Facilities and Equipment. After you have decreased your selection of welding schools to 2 or 3 possibilities, you should think out visiting the campuses to look over their facilities. Make sure that both the equipment and the facilities that you will be trained on are modern. Specifically, the training equipment should be comparable to what you will be using on the job. If you are uncertain what to look for, and are already in an apprenticeship program, consult with the master welder you are working under for guidance. If not, ask a local Riverside NJ welding contractor if they can give you a few suggestions.

School Location. Although we already briefly talked about the significance of location, there are a couple of additional points that we should cover. You should remember that unless you can relocate, the welding program you select needs to be within commuting distance of your Riverside NJ home. If you do choose to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides moving costs there could be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is particularly true for welder diploma programs offered by community colleges. Additionally, if the school offers an apprenticeship or job placement program, most likely their placements are within the school’s local community. So the location of the school should be in a region or state where you subsequently will desire to work.

Small Classes. One-on-one instruction is essential for a hands-on trade such as welding. It’s easy to get lost in larger classes and not receive much individualized instruction. Ask what the typical class size is for the welder schools you are reviewing. Ask if you can attend a couple of classes so that you can witness just how much personal attention the students are getting. While there, speak with a few of the students and get their opinions. Also, speak with some of the trainers and find out what their welding experience has been and what credentials and certifications they hold.

Convenient Class Scheduling. Lots of folks learn a new profession while still working at their current job. Check to see that the class schedules for the schools you are considering are convenient enough to satisfy your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evenings or on weekends near Riverside NJ, make sure that the schools you are considering offer those choices. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify that the school you pick offers part-time enrollment. Also, check to see what the policy is to make up classes if you you miss any due to work, illness or family responsibilities.

Online Welding Schools

Riverside NJ master welder attending online welding classesWelding is very much a manual type of trade, and therefore not very suitable for training online. Having said that, there are a small number of online welding classes offered by various community colleges and technical schools in the greater Riverside NJ area that can be credited toward a certificate or degree program. These courses mainly deal with such subjects as reading blueprints, safety,, and metallurgy. They can help provide a beginner a basis to begin their education and training. Nevertheless, the most significant point is that you can’t learn how to weld or work with welding materials until you actually do it. Clearly that can’t be performed online. These skills need to be learned in an on-campus setting or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is better suited for experienced welders that want to advance their expertise or perhaps attain a more advanced degree. So if you should discover an online welding degree or certificate program, be extremely cautious and verify that the larger part of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of environment.
