Welder Degree and Certificate Training Programs

welding car in Prosperity SCThere are a number of alternatives available to obtain training as a welder in a technical or trade school. You can receive a diploma, a certificate or an Associate Degree. Bachelor Degrees are offered in Welding Engineering or Welding Technology, but are more advanced courses than most journeyman welders will need. Some programs are also made available along with an apprenticeship program. Below are brief explanations of the most common welding programs available in the Prosperity SC area.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are usually made available by trade and technical schools and take about one year to complete. They are more hands-on training in nature, created primarily to teach welding skills. They can provide a good foundation for a new journeyman or apprentice welder, or specialized skills for experienced welders.
  • Associate Degree Programs will take two years to finish and are usually offered by community colleges. An Associate Degree in Welding Technology offers a more extensive education than the diploma or certificate while still providing the foundation that readies students to enter the workforce.

A number of states and municipalities do have licensing prerequisites for welders, therefore make sure to find out for your location of potential employment. As needed, the welder school you choose should prep you for any licensing exams that you will need to pass in addition to furnishing the suitable training to become a qualified welder.

Welder Certification Choices

welder working in Prosperity SC shopThere are several institutions that provide welding certifications, which assess the knowledge and skill level of those applying. Many Prosperity SC employers not only expect a certificate or degree from an accredited welding program, but also certification from a respected agency such as the American Welding Society (AWS). A variety of certifications are offered dependent on the kind of work that the welder does. Just some of the skills that certification can acknowledge are the welder’s ability to

  • Work in compliance with specific codes
  • Work with specific metal thicknesses
  • Work with various kinds of welds
  • Operate according to contract specifications

As formerly stated, many states, cities or local municipalities have licensing requirements for welders. Of those requiring licensing, some additionally require certification for different kinds of work. Certification is also a means to prove to employers that you are an extremely skilled and qualified welder. So similarly as with licensing, look into the requirements for your location and verify that the welding trade school you select prepares you for certification as needed.

Subjects to Ask Welder Tech Programs

What to ask Prosperity SC welding schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the credential you want to obtain, a diploma, certificate or degree, you can begin to assess schools. As you probably know, there are numerous welder vocational and trade schools in the Prosperity SC area. That’s why it’s important to decide up front what qualifications your chosen school must have. We have already discussed 2 important ones that most people consider first, which are location and tuition cost. As stated, although they are essential qualifiers, they are not the only ones that need to be considered. After all, the program you select is going to furnish the training that will be the foundation of your new career as a welder. So below are some additional factors you may want to consider before picking a welder trade school.

Accreditation. It’s essential that the welding trade school you decide on is accredited by either a national or a regional organization. There are 2 standard types of accreditation. The school may earn Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on a specific program the school offers, for example Welding Technology. So make certain that the program you select is accredited, not just the school itself. Also, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, for example the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). In addition to helping ensure that you receive a superior education, the accreditation may also assist in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are often not offered in Prosperity SC for schools that are not accredited. Finally, for those states or municipalities that mandate licensing, they may require that the welder training program be accredited also.

Apprenticeship and Job Assistance Programs. A large number of welding degree or certificate programs are offered combined with an apprenticeship program. Other schools will help place you in an apprenticeship or a job after graduation. Ask if the schools you are reviewing assist in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job placement program. The schools should have associations with local unions and other metal working businesses to which they can place their students. Older schools may have a larger network of graduates that they can rely upon for placements. These programs can help students find employment and develop relationships within the Prosperity SC welding community.

Job Placement and Completion Rates. The completion rate is the percentage of students that begin an instructional program and finish it. It’s important that the welder school you pick has a high completion rate. A lower rate could mean that the students who enrolled in the program were unhappy with the training, the teachers, or the facilities, and dropped out. The job placement rate is also a good indicator of the quality of training. A higher job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of Prosperity SC contacts to help students secure apprenticeships or employment after graduation.

Modern Facilities and Equipment. Once you have limited your selection of welder schools to 2 or 3 options, you should consider visiting the campuses to look over their facilities. Make sure that both the facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are modern. In particular, the training equipment should be similar to what you will be using on the job. If you are not sure what to look for, and are already in an apprenticeship program, ask the master welder you are working under for guidance. If not, ask a local Prosperity SC welding contractor if they can give you some tips.

School Location. Although we already briefly talked about the relevance of location, there are a couple of additional issues that we need to deal with. You should remember that unless you are able to relocate, the welder program you pick must be within driving distance of your Prosperity SC home. If you do opt to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there may be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is particularly the case for welding certificate programs offered by community colleges. Additionally, if the school offers a job placement or apprenticeship program, often their placements are within the school’s local community. So the location of the school needs to be in a region or state where you subsequently will wish to work.

Small Classes. Individualized training is important for a manual trade such as welding. It’s possible to be lost in bigger classes and not receive much personalized training. Ask what the average class size is for the welding schools you are reviewing. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of classes so that you can experience how much individual attention the students are receiving. While there, talk with a few of the students and get their opinions. Also, chat with some of the instructors and find out what their welding experience has been and what certifications and credentials they hold.

Convenient Class Schedules. Some people learn a new profession while still working at their present job. Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are looking at are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Prosperity SC, make certain that the schools you are considering provide those alternatives. If you can only attend part-time, verify that the school you pick offers part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the protocol is to make up classes if you you miss any due to illness, work or family emergencies.

Online Welding Classes

Prosperity SC master welder attending online welding classesWelding is truly a hands-on type of trade, and for that reason not extremely suitable for training online. However, there are a small number of online welding classes offered by various community colleges and vocational schools in the greater Prosperity SC area that may count toward a degree or certificate program. These classes primarily deal with such subjects as reading blueprints, safety,, and metallurgy. They can help provide a beginner a basis to start their training and education. Nevertheless, the most important point is that you can’t learn how to weld or work with welding materials until you actually do it. Clearly that can’t be accomplished online. These skills need to be learned in an on-campus setting or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is better suited for seasoned welders that desire to advance their expertise or possibly obtain a more advanced degree. So if you should discover an online welding certificate or degree program, be very cautious and make certain that the larger part of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of environment.
