Welder Certificate and Degree Training Programs

welding car in Peace Dale RIThere are several options to get training as a welder in a trade or technical school. You can receive a a certificate, a diploma or an Associate Degree. Bachelor Degrees are available in Welding Engineering or Welding Technology, but are more advanced degrees than most journeyman welders will need. Some programs are also made available combined with an apprenticeship program. Following are short descriptions of the most typical welding programs available in the Peace Dale RI area.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are usually offered by technical and trade schools and require about one year to complete. They are more hands-on training in scope, designed primarily to teach welding skills. They can provide a good foundation for a new journeyman or apprentice welder, or additional skills for working welders.
  • Associate Degree Programs will take two years to complete and are most often offered by community colleges. An Associate Degree in Welding Technology provides a more extensive education than the diploma or certificate while still providing the foundation that prepares students to enter the workforce.

A number of municipalities and states do have licensing prerequisites for welders, therefore be sure to find out for your location of potential employment. If required, the welding school you select should prepare you for any licensing exams that you will need to take in addition to supplying the appropriate training to become a professional welder.

Welding Certification Options

welder working in Peace Dale RI shopThere are several organizations that offer welding certifications, which test the knowledge and skill level of those applying. Numerous Peace Dale RI employers not only demand a degree or certificate from an accredited welding program, but also certification from a respected organization like the American Welding Society (AWS). A wide range of certifications are available dependent on the type of work that the welder performs. Just some of the skills that certification can acknowledge are the welder’s ability to

  • Operate in compliance with specific codes
  • Work with specified metal thicknesses
  • Work with certain kinds of welds
  • Operate in compliance with contract specifications

As earlier mentioned, various cities, states or local municipalities have licensing requirements for welders. Of those requiring licensing, many additionally require certification for various types of work. Certification is also a means to prove to employers that you are an extremely skilled and qualified welder. So just as with licensing, look into the requirements for your local area and make sure that the welder vocational school you choose preps you for certification as needed.

Subjects to Ask Welding Vocational Programs

What to ask Peace Dale RI welding schoolsOnce you have chosen the credential you would like to attain, a degree, certificate or diploma, you can begin to compare schools. As you can imagine, there are numerous welding vocational and trade schools in the Peace Dale RI area. That’s why it’s necessary to determine up front what qualifications your school of choice must have. We have already covered a couple of important ones that most people consider first, which are location and tuition cost. As stated, although they are essential qualifiers, they are not the only ones that must be considered. After all, the program you choose is going to provide the instruction that will be the foundation of your new profession as a welder. So following are more factors you might want to consider before picking a welding technical school.

Accreditation. It’s very important that the welding vocational school you choose is accredited by either a national or a regional agency. There are two basic types of accreditation. The school may receive Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on a specific program the school offers, for example Welding Technology. So confirm that the program you select is accredited, not just the school alone. Also, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, for example the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). Besides helping ensure that you receive an excellent education, the accreditation might also help in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases not available in Peace Dale RI for schools that are not accredited. Finally, for those states or municipalities that require licensing, they may require that the welder training program be accredited also.

Apprenticeship and Job Placement Programs. Many welding degree or diploma programs are offered combined with an apprenticeship program. Other schools will help place you in an apprenticeship or a job after graduation. Find out if the schools you are considering help in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job assistance program. The schools must have relationships with local unions and other metal working businesses to which they can place their students. Older schools may have a larger network of graduates that they can rely upon for referrals. These programs can help students find employment and develop associations within the Peace Dale RI welding community.

Completion and Job Placement Rates. The completion rate is the percentage of students that begin an educational program and complete it. It’s essential that the welder school you choose has a high completion rate. A reduced rate may mean that the students who joined the program were dissatisfied with the training, the instructors, or the facilities, and quit. The job placement rate is also a good indicator of the quality of training. A higher job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of Peace Dale RI employer relationships to assist students obtain apprenticeships or employment after graduation.

Up-to-date Facilities and Equipment. After you have narrowed down your selection of welding programs to two or three options, you should think out visiting the campuses to inspect their facilities. Confirm that both the equipment and the facilities that you will be instructed on are modern. In particular, the training equipment should be similar to what you will be working with on the job. If you are uncertain what to look for, and are currently in an apprenticeship program, consult with the master welder you are working under for guidance. If not, ask a local Peace Dale RI welding contractor if they can give you some suggestions.

School Location. Even though we previously briefly covered the importance of location, there are a couple of additional issues that we need to address. You should remember that unless you have the ability to move, the welder school you select needs to be within commuting distance of your Peace Dale RI home. If you do choose to attend an out-of-state school, apart from moving expenses there could be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is especially true for welding degree programs offered by community colleges. Also, if the school offers a job placement or apprenticeship program, often their placements are within the school’s local community. So the location of the school should be in an area or state where you ultimately will wish to work.

Small Classes. Individualized training is important for a hands-on trade such as welding. It’s easy to be lost in larger classes and not receive much individualized training. Ask what the typical class size is for the welder schools you are reviewing. Ask if you can attend a few classes so that you can witness how much personal attention the students are getting. While there, speak with several of the students and get their evaluations. Also, speak with a couple of the teachers and ask what their welding experience has been and what credentials and certifications they have earned.

Convenient Class Schedules. Lots of folks learn a new profession while still employed at their present job. Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are convenient enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Peace Dale RI, confirm that the schools you are considering provide those options. If you can only enroll part-time, confirm that the school you decide on offers part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the policy is to make up classes if you you miss any due to work, illness or family responsibilities.

Online Welding Certificate and Degree Programs

Peace Dale RI master welder attending online welding classesWelding is very much a hands-on type of trade, and consequently not extremely compatible with training online. Even so, there are a few online welding programs offered by various community colleges and trade schools in the greater Peace Dale RI area that may count toward a certificate or degree program. These classes mainly deal with such subjects as safety, reading blueprints, and metallurgy. They can help give a beginner a basis to start their training and education. However, the most critical point is that you can’t learn how to weld or use welding materials until you actually do it. Obviously that can’t be accomplished online. These skills have to be learned in an on-campus environment or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is better suited for experienced welders that would like to advance their expertise or possibly earn a more advanced degree. So if you should come across an online welding certificate or degree program, be very careful and verify that the majority of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of environment.
