Questions to Ask Welder Tech Programs

What to ask Mount Pleasant NC welding schoolsWhen you have chosen the credential you want to attain, a degree, certificate or diploma, you can start to assess schools. As you can imagine, there are a large number of welding vocational and trade schools in the Mount Pleasant NC area. That’s why it’s necessary to decide up front what qualifications your chosen school must have. We have already covered a couple of important ones that most people consider first, which are location and tuition cost. As mentioned, although they are very important qualifications, they are not the only ones that need to be considered. After all, the program you pick is going to furnish the education that will be the foundation of your new profession as a welder. So below are some additional factors you might need to consider before picking a welder tech school.

Accreditation. It’s very important that the welding vocational school you decide on is accredited by either a national or a regional organization. There are 2 basic kinds of accreditation. The school may earn Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on a single program the school has, such as Welding Technology. So make certain that the program you select is accredited, not just the school itself. Also, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, for example the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). In addition to helping ensure that you receive a superior education, the accreditation may also assist in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently unavailable in Mount Pleasant NC for schools that are not accredited. Also, for those states or municipalities that mandate licensing, they may require that the welder training program be accredited also.

Apprenticeship and Job Placement Programs. A large number of welder certificate or degree programs are offered combined with an apprenticeship program. Some other schools will assist in placing you in a job or an apprenticeship upon graduation. Ask if the schools you are reviewing assist in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job assistance program. These schools should have partnerships with local unions and various metal working businesses to which they can place their students. More established schools may have a more substantial network of graduates that they can rely upon for placements. These programs can help students find employment and develop associations within the Mount Pleasant NC welding community.

Job Placement and Completion Rates. The completion rate is the percentage of students that enroll in an instructional program and finish it. It’s crucial that the welding program you pick has a high completion rate. A reduced rate could mean that the students who enrolled in the program were dissatisfied with the training, the teachers, or the facilities, and dropped out. The job placement rate is also a good indicator of the caliber of training. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of Mount Pleasant NC employer relationships to assist students obtain employment or apprenticeships upon graduation.

Up-to-date Facilities and Equipment. Once you have limited your selection of welder schools to 2 or 3 possibilities, you should consider visiting the campuses to look over their facilities. Verify that both the equipment and the facilities that you will be trained on are up-to-date. Specifically, the training equipment should be similar to what you will be working with on the job. If you are not sure what to look for, and are currently in an apprenticeship program, ask the master welder you are working under for guidance. If not, ask a local Mount Pleasant NC welding contractor if they can give you some pointers.

School Location. Although we already briefly covered the relevance of location, there are a couple of additional points that we need to deal with. You should keep in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the welding program you choose needs to be within commuting distance of your Mount Pleasant NC home. If you do decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to moving expenses there may be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is especially the case for welding certificate programs offered by community colleges. Additionally, if the school offers a job placement or apprenticeship program, often their placements are within the school’s local community. So the location of the school should be in an area or state where you ultimately will desire to work.

Smaller Classes. Personalized instruction is important for a manual trade such as welding. It’s easy to get lost in bigger classes and not get much one-on-one instruction. Find out what the average class size is for the welding schools you are considering. Inquire if you can attend some classes so that you can observe just how much personal attention the students are getting. While there, talk with a few of the students and get their evaluations. Also, speak with some of the instructors and ask what their welding experience has been and what credentials and certifications they have earned.

Convenient Class Schedules. Many people learn a new trade while still employed at their present job. Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are convenient enough to meet your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Mount Pleasant NC, make sure that the schools you are reviewing provide those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, verify that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, find out what the protocol is to make up classes if you you miss any because of illness, work or family emergencies.

Online Welding Training

Mount Pleasant NC master welder attending online welding classesWelding is very much a manual kind of profession, and consequently not extremely suitable for online training. Having said that, there are a few online welding programs offered by certain community colleges and trade schools in the greater Mount Pleasant NC area that can count toward a certificate or degree program. These classes primarily deal with such subjects as reading blueprints, safety,, and metallurgy. They can help provide a novice a basis to begin their education and training. Nevertheless, the most important point is that you can’t learn how to weld or use welding materials until you actually do it. Naturally that can’t be done online. These skills need to be learned in an on-campus environment or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is more appropriate for seasoned welders that want to advance their knowledge or possibly obtain a more advanced degree. So if you should find an online welding certificate or degree program, be very cautious and make certain that the greater part of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of setting.
