Welder Degree and Certificate Programs

welding car in Laporte MNThere are multiple alternatives available to obtain training as a welder in a trade or vocational school. You can receive a a certificate, a diploma or an Associate Degree. Bachelor Degrees are available in Welding Engineering or Welding Technology, but are more advanced degrees than most journeyman welders will need. Some programs are also made available along with an apprenticeship program. Following are short explanations of the most common welding programs offered in the Laporte MN area.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are normally offered by technical and trade schools and require about a year to complete. They are more hands-on training in scope, created primarily to teach welding skills. They can provide a good foundation for a new journeyman or apprentice welder, or supplemental skills for working welders.
  • Associate Degree Programs will take two years to complete and are most often offered by community colleges. An Associate Degree in Welding Technology provides a more well-rounded education than the certificate or diploma while still supplying the foundation that prepares students to enter the workforce.

Some municipalities and states do have licensing requirements for welders, therefore be sure to find out for your location of future employment. If needed, the welder school you select should prep you for any licensing exams that you will have to pass in addition to providing the appropriate training to become a professional welder.

Welder Certification Alternatives

welder working in Laporte MN shopThere are several organizations that offer welder certifications, which assess the knowledge and skill level of those applying. A large number of Laporte MN employers not only require a degree or certificate from an accredited welding program, but also certification from a renowned agency such as the American Welding Society (AWS). A wide range of certifications are available based on the kind of work that the welder performs. A few of the skills that certification can attest to are the welder’s ability to

  • Work in compliance with specific codes
  • Work with specific metal thicknesses
  • Work with specific types of welds
  • Perform in compliance with contract specifications

As formerly stated, many cities, states or local municipalities have licensing requirements for welders. Of those requiring licensing, many also require certification for different kinds of work. Certification is also a means to prove to employers that you are a highly skilled and qualified welder. So similarly as with licensing, look into the requirements for your local area and make certain that the welding trade school you select preps you for certification if needed.

What to Ask Welder Vocational Programs

What to ask Laporte MN welding schoolsWhen you have decided on the credential you would like to attain, a degree, certificate or diploma, you can begin to assess schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are many welder trade and technical schools in the Laporte MN area. That’s why it’s important to establish in advance what qualifications your selected school must have. We have already discussed 2 important ones that many people consider first, which are location and the cost of tuition. As mentioned, although they are essential qualifiers, they are not the only ones that should be considered. After all, the program you pick is going to provide the training that will be the foundation of your new profession as a welder. So following are more factors you may want to consider before picking a welder vocational school.

Accreditation. It’s extremely important that the welding vocational school you choose is accredited by either a national or a regional agency. There are 2 basic kinds of accreditation. The school may earn Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on a specific program the school has, such as Welding Technology. So make sure that the program you choose is accredited, not just the school itself. Also, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, like the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). In addition to helping ensure that you get a superior education, the accreditation might also help in getting financial assistance or student loans, which are often not offered in Laporte MN for non-accredited schools. Also, for those states or municipalities that require licensing, they may require that the welder training program be accredited also.

Apprenticeship and Job Placement Programs. A large number of welding certificate or degree programs are offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship program. Some other schools will assist in placing you in an apprenticeship or a job upon graduation. Ask if the schools you are looking at help in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job placement program. The schools must have relationships with local unions and other metal working businesses to which they can place their students. Older schools may have a larger network of graduates that they can utilize for placements. These programs can help students find employment and establish associations within the Laporte MN welding community.

Completion and Job Placement Rates. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students that enroll in an academic program and complete it. It’s essential that the welder school you pick has a higher completion rate. A low rate might signify that the students who were in the program were dissatisfied with the training, the instructors, or the facilities, and dropped out. The job placement rate is also an indication of the caliber of training. A higher job placement rate will not only confirm that the program has a good reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of Laporte MN contacts to help students obtain apprenticeships or employment upon graduation.

Up-to-date Facilities and Equipment. After you have decreased your choice of welder programs to 2 or 3 options, you should consider going to the campuses to inspect their facilities. Make sure that both the equipment and the facilities that you will be trained on are up-to-date. Specifically, the training equipment should be comparable to what you will be working with in the field. If you are unsure what to look for, and are currently in an apprenticeship program, ask the master welder you are working under for guidance. If not, ask a local Laporte MN welding contractor if they can give you some pointers.

School Location. Even though we previously briefly covered the significance of location, there are a few additional points that we should cover. You should remember that unless you can relocate, the welder school you select must be within driving distance of your Laporte MN home. If you do decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation expenses there may be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is especially the case for welder certificate programs offered by community colleges. Furthermore, if the school offers an apprenticeship or job placement program, most likely their placements are within the school’s regional community. So the location of the school should be in a region or state where you subsequently will wish to work.

Smaller Classes. One-on-one training is essential for a manual trade such as welding. It’s possible to be overlooked in bigger classes and not get much personalized training. Ask what the typical class size is for the welder schools you are reviewing. Inquire if you can attend some classes so that you can see just how much personal attention the students are getting. While there, speak with some of the students and get their evaluations. Similarly, chat with some of the trainers and find out what their welding experience has been and what certifications and credentials they have earned.

Flexible Class Scheduling. Some people learn a new profession while still working at their present job. Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are looking at are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Laporte MN, make sure that the schools you are reviewing provide those choices. If you can only enroll part-time, make certain that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, check to see what the protocol is to make up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family responsibilities.

Online Welding Classes

Laporte MN master welder attending online welding classesWelding is very much a hands-on kind of profession, and for that reason not extremely suitable for online training. Even so, there are some online welding classes offered by various community colleges and technical schools in the greater Laporte MN area that may be credited toward a certificate or degree program. These courses primarily deal with such topics as reading blueprints, safety,, and metallurgy. They can help give a novice a basis to initiate their training and education. However, the most critical point is that you can’t learn how to weld or work with welding materials until you actually do it. Obviously that can’t be accomplished online. These skills have to be learned in an on-campus setting or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is better suited for experienced welders that would like to advance their expertise or possibly obtain a more advanced degree. So if you should come across an online welding certificate or degree program, be very cautious and verify that the bulk of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of setting.
